I just don't get it.
They're slow lights, and they don't have enough to tonnage to carry good weapons.

Clearly I'm missing something. Please enlighten me.

Most people don't know how to play lights, which use speed and situational effectiveness to function. The urbie plays more like a medium support mech.

Good survivability, nice mobility with jump jets, excellent mounts, carry enough weapons to be a legit threat -- stuff like the 3LPPC/ECM loyalty Urbie are excellent, or the 5MPL K9

Not enough tonnage for good guns? You mean like most like mechs? Typically they're 20-30 tons. It's not like you can fit a pair of Gauss Rifles on any light mech.

Of course, not all mechs are for everyone, so instead of seeing the event as a poor quality mech, look at it as a free mech bay and some free C-BIlls & cosmetics just for playing the game.

there's no mech that can do things, an Urbie can do:

also, it's still quite fast, nimble, tanky, carries quite some guns, looks cute ..
Urbies are just the best mechs out there. Posted Image

Put it another way: the thing about most lights is that they need to be constantly engaging in order to make an impact because they do not carry enough guns to sit back and chill

Urbies are very good at being able to constantly engage because of their excellent survivability, small profile, great hitboxes, good JJ mobility and superior mounts. You can constantly peek and poke from various angles and not worry as much about return fire as you would compared to, say, a 4LPPC JR7-K, which is an excellent offensive mech which also has good mounts and mobility but is hamstrung by its gigantic CT.

"good guns" is a relative term. the uac10 may be the best weapon in the game. it doesnt do the most damage, and its not so big you cannot mount it on a heavy weapons light. it may not have the range of gauss or the damage of a uac20. but it has good damage, good range and its hard to find a situation where you cannot use a uac10 to your advantage. gauss, hgauss, uac20, are all niche weapons, the uac10 will be able to do damage in more situations. you are shooting rather than trying to figure out how to close in or get an angle.

  • UM-AIV

This variant of the UrbanMech replaces the standard weaponry with an Arrow IV missile launcher and ER Medium Laser. It requires an Endo Steel chassis and Small Cockpit to provide room, and the UrbanMech can only carry ten rounds for the Arrow system. Despite these limitations, it is still a decent fire support unit. Notably, it can be used to launch nuclear-tipped Arrow IV missiles (see Notes below). BV (2.0) = 603[13

  • A canonical example is the UM-AIV variant, which was thought up as a means to bring a nuclear weapon and nuke the Kell Hounds at the gaming table for GenCon 2011; it even famously featured in the GenCon diorama.

I love Urbies. They are probably my best mech to play with, certainly my best light mech. Its small
tanky, reasonably fast and can carry quite a bit of firepower for its size. Urbies for life.

30 tonnes, high weapon mounts combined with stupidly good hitbox and the best armor quirks in the game and some variants with very good offensive quirks.

fast enough to GTFO if someone really gets mad to you unless you have overextended a lot.
Mid/(short) range harasser/skirmisher and good at it. Because of said hitbox and highmounts I have 1v1 defeated multiple assaults eez with urbies without taking almost any damage.

Few builds I have used:
um-r63 3xLPPC 3xHMG feel free to try LMG, but I have found that those HMGs give nice extra oomph close range pretty much each game.
um-r80 3xLPPC 2xSL with ECM Better than previous at LPPC but lacks close range firepower.
um-k9 UAC5 5xSL again ER SL vs SL Range vs DPS&Heat. I originally build this as troll build and found out it is actually very effective build.
um-k9 5xMPL Classic K9 build, good at it.
um-k9 5xERML Alternate to MPL build... with small hitbox, highmounts pretty damn good at poking.
um-r68 MRM40 Mrrrrrrmms why not?

The same reason people like that abomination Franken dog called a Pug. Regardless of what Darwin believes, or the fact that many of them cannot reproduce without human intervention.

I make it a point of effort to try and knock out the opposing teams urbies first and immediately. Nothing is worst than watching one of them dance on your wreck on the defeat screen or rack up a ton of damage and kills because they were ignored long enough to get out a ton of punishment.

Their 360 torso rotation is really good, think of them as a mobile turret.
