Good Mech?

The learning curve in the game is very steep. It would be nice to know that I'm playing a good mech that's well configured while I'm trying to build my skills. I know I'm getting my butt kicked because I suck, but is my mech making things worse?

Seems like there should be a fairly short list of Medium mechs that are good starter mechs and the builds that go with them. Everyone talks about "meta", but I can't find a list of the meta mechs.
I've read a bunch of posts, and pretty much every mech gets recommended by someone.
Here's the definintion of "meta":
Meta
Category: -
1. Established and well performing builds for any given 'Mech and the ranking of 'Mechs.
2. Use of out of game information.
Where can I find the ranking of Mechs?

I've got 2 of the S Tier mechs, but they're not configured as listed. I'll try changing them and seeing how it goes. Thanks for the links!!!

Database builds is considered "good", but you can modify them for yourself with just general idea of the build. This is not definitive and not absolute. but it helps to get general idea "how should i build this 'Mech".
I also should mention that some builds and 'Mechs simply aren't included in the bases because authors don't have hands to test them. For example, there is plenty of "IS Medium with Med Pulse Lasers" builds which deserve at least A-B rank, like Vindicator or Phoenix Hawk, but they are not included in the Tier List.

I just got the Madcat DS. I've been playing it stock, and I'm not enjoying it very much. But it's supposed to be very good. I'll look up the loadout from the lists and see if I can build something I like.

MAL-2P
The Mauler-2P is greatly underrated within the Mauler lineup; Mauler's are glass cannons, but can pack a huge amount of firepower. The 2P can be run as a dual LB20 mech like this (and it takes advantage of the -10% cooldown bonus): MAL-2P . Or, it can be run as an MRM and Laser platform like this (and takes advantage of all the missile and laser cooldowns, especially the missile cooldown & spread): MAL-2P
The Wolverine Quarantine is also one of the best MRM mediums, so definitely start using that. I'd recommend picking up other Wolverines like the 6K and 7K.

KTO-18 does well with 4xASRM6 and a small Rocket Launcher in CT (mostly there to activate the bay doors for that location, which grant you a damage reduction bonus when closed).
QKD-IV4 is a MRM platform, through and through. 2xMRM40 and a big engine.
BSW-X2 is easy like the other 2xballistic Bushwackers. just stick on XL255 and 2xUAC10 and call it a day.
UM-K9 is pretty much meant to be a 5xMPL mech.
CP-S has three main builds - dual Heavy Gauss, quad LB10X or 2xUAC10+2xUAC5. That last one is my personal favourite.
MAD-IIC-SC is usually seen with 4xSRM6 (or ASRM6 depending on the build) and 2xLB20X. Short range but hits like a ton of bricks.

All great build choices, especially if you lean towards certain play styles. Feel free to ask me, SharDar, if you want me (or for that matter anyone like Horseman) to build some of these for you in Mech DB.

That's weird! It would be great if the stock builds were really good so that you can concentrate on learning the many other aspects of the game, confident that you have a competitive mech.

Most of them come from the tabletop wargame, and did not translate very well to MWO's different mechanics. If you want a rundown of meta builds, https://grimmechs.isengrim.org/ is the place to start (GOTCHA: Some of the more specialized builds heavily depend on minmaxing your skill tree and may perform very badly without the right skill buffs.

Maybe it´s not a problem of the respective builds but the time you spend playing with one mech and developing its according skill tree?
I find it to be an immense difference if I just started playing with a new mech or a mastered one.

No. SharDar is experiencing the steep climb, and is trying to find their grip so they can start learning to climb; in other words, the pilot is looking for a mech they stick with for a while. So what if they has 24 mechs? I only have 71 after playing since mid 2016.

There are builds that work better than others, now I for myself have to play a lot of matches before I get accustomed to a mech and I have the feeling you can only tell if you like a mech if you mastered it (concerning skill tree)
For instance, I found my HBK awfull till I had the skill tree filled - now I love it.
BUT, you are completely right, in doing so I did alter the custom loadout and kept adapting it till I liked the handling of it.
Hope this makes sense now?

I've personally seen good players do 1000+ damage with this mech.
With LE275 engine it goes at 89.1 kph, and you have enough space to go XL if wish to!
And it's in both below grimmechs lists
By the way, there's now a +30% CBills Bonus platinum version of HBK-4P(P)!

Yeah, Hunchback is a solid 'Mech, no matter what variant you deploy in.

The problem is that although I would be interested in Hunchback, I have no use for Jenner, Catapult and Atlas.
I would buy that Hunchback alone for five bucks, but I do not know why I should spend 20 dollars for the set of four 'Mechs, if I know that I am not going to use three of them.
