Hello folks!

I have been away for 4 years now (since I moved off into the mountains) Now that I have ELON's Ukraine defense system (STARLINK) I can play again! So, besides me sliding from a T1 to a T3, is there any major stuff that I should be aware of or are there any stickies / existing posts for returning players and what they need to know?

Thanks!

Neb.

It's not really relevant unless you are a metawhore. Lol.

Play the game and have fun.

Otherwise you have a LOT of reading to do.

Not to be obtuse, but even returning & casual MWO players sometimes miss the not-so-obvious MWO/Cauldron changes since April 2021**.

Anyways, here it is: <At the time of this writing>
https://mwomercs.com...auldron-changes

===========================
Major weapon behavior changes:
===========================

IS: STD Large Lasers: increased to firing 4x at once without ghost heat penalty.

IS: STD PPC: increased to firing 3x at once without ghost heat penalty.
IS: STD PPC: does slight (exponential decay) damage below minimum range (similar to Clan LRM).

IS: Light-PPC: no minimum range anymore.

IS: Snub-Nose-PPC: decreased back down to firing 2x at once without ghost heat penalty (post-June-2022 patch)
IS: Snub-Nose-PPC: does splash damage (similar to Clan ER-PPC), damage profile 2.5 / 10 / 2.5

IS: Light-Gauss: no longer part of ghost heat linked penalty group of IS Gauss Family & IS PPC Family.

IS: STD SRM4: increased to firing 5x at once without ghost heat penalty.

IS: Rocket Launcher: does slight (exponential decay) damage below minimum range (similar to Clan LRM).

IS: CASE: now 0 tons, still consume 1x critical slot. Equippable in Arm, Leg, Left/Right Torso.

IS & Clan: AMS ammo does not explode anymore upon crit.

IS & Clan: MASC redline threshold increased to 85% (from 75%); MASC lasts longer (fill rate decreased).

Clan: ER-Micro-Laser: changed to "no" ghost heat penalty (fire as many as you want at once!)

Clan: Micro-Pulse-Laser: increased to firing 12x at once without ghost heat penalty.
Clan: Micro-Pulse-Laser: no longer part of ghost heat linked penalty group of Clan ER-Micro-Laser.

Clan: AC5: increased to firing 4x AC5 at once without ghost heat penalty.

Clan: AC20: increased to firing 2x AC20 at once without ghost heat penalty.

Clan: ATM3: increased to firing 6x ATM3 at once without ghost heat penalty.

Welcome back Neb. Pretty much what others have said. Check out the Cauldron changes, which are incorporated into the stats at Mech DB (https://mwo.nav-alpha.com/), and are reflected in the patch notes of the last year or so. Builds at https://grimmechs.isengrim.org/ are still mostly relevant if incomplete. Ironically, the meta when you left has largely returned (imho) erll/c-ERppc + Gauss. Jump sniping is a thing once again. Lots of mechs have quirks to give them a real niche (e.g., you can do 2 ERPPC and a Gauss on a Marauder BH and suffer no ghost heat). Certainly some variants are still lacking and remain largely unplayed, but there is more variety and more viability than ever before. About the only distinction I can think of vs. back in the day is that fast machine gun boats (in wolf packs, less so when run individually) like the Viper, Piranha, Myst Linx, etc, are crazy good now.

I would suggest that TTB and Baradul are not necessarily good sources of information as their primary focus is builds that are entertaining.

Other Youtube options with more accurate, if less entertaining advice in no particular order: Yondude, aforementioned DATA, Scout Derek, Clan BRxV (Brios), GeeRam.

DATA and Brios probably have the most comprehensive 'explanatory' vids, but the rest have good gameplay vids with good commentary

Have to agree. Unless you are going to dive into faction play with its strict meta then just hop back into quick play and have a blast. Contrary to the complainers and gripers on the forums the game is still alive and well and you can get fast matches nearly any time of the the day. What used to work four years ago will probably still work now and might even work better depending on what it was. Plus all the changes since then have been mostly positive and the latest sets especially the skill tree changes are very useful and welcome. You picked a good time to come back and hopefully more will follow. I'd concentrate on playing mobile mechs at first till you get used to the flow of the game again and can then play slower heavies/assaults and not get left behind by being out of position because nascar was and still is a thing.
