connecting to mwo has been kind of flaky as of late. if you get some kind of network error or cant log on, switching dns can might it. here is how to do that.

Go to Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> Network and Sharing Center -> Change Adapter Settings

Find your ethernet/wifi adapter and click 'Properties'

Double click on 'Internet Protocol Version 4'

Set 'Use the following DNS server addresses' and enter the addresses from one of the following dns providers:

Cloudflare - 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1
Google - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Quad9 - 9.9.9.9 and 149.112.112.112
OpenDNS - 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Comodo - 8.26.56.26 and 8.20.247.20

hit ok to save the setting. if you did it right the game may or may not work. if it doesnt work you can try a different dns provider, chances are at least one will work. or set it to obtain dns automatically to undo the setting (in case you break something).

Personally I default to Google primary with Cloudflare secondary. Both are major companies and in case of any trouble one or the other should work.

Also of note, if someone wishes to add multiple, they can...
  • go below the "Use the following DNS server addresses" section to the "Advanced" button
  • in the following "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" dialog, go to the "DNS" tab
  • add more addresses to the "DNS server addresses, in order of use" field by using the "Add" button below it
  • select addresses in that listing, even if you do not have them all added yet, and use the up and down arrows on the side to position them in the user's desired order
...thereby allowing the user to have Cloudflare, Google, OpenDNS, Comodo, even their Local ISP-provided Router/Gateway DNS option, and possibly even Quad9 too all in the options at the same time in order to prevent most failures that could come from only having a single DNS provider in their configuration. And that's merely one way of configuring it, not a hard-set rule on being the only way. For some people, I know it might be overkill. But for others, it can really save your sanity! :)
