I came back after a 2 year break, and snubs seem fine to me.
The extra 5 damage padding is why people take them.
Take that away and they probably won't be used as much.

IF snubs are over performing, there is a simple solution. Make them weigh one more ton. Lights will have to strain their build to fit two like they currently are, and heavies and assaults will struggle to have six. Cooldown could be lengthened or give them some kind of overheat jam mechanic, but for them to be useful as intended they still need to be able to round a corner and do 10 damage to the targeted area at close to mid range. Most of the snubs in lore were built using concept star league designs, so variations could be made. We could have snubs that weigh 6 tons but have the literal "shotgun" effect/even split(5/5/5/) splash damage. Additionally there could be a 7 ton option that keeps the current damage profile(2.5/10/2.5) but is harder to equip on lighter mechs. We could even have snubs that take one additional crit slot, weigh 6 tons, but generate 1 less point of heat and have no splash damage. I think all of these should be options.

Anything that breaks stock configurations is an automatic no-go. Piranha already takes it in the cheeks from 'Mech Dads demanding More Tabletop Authenticity; monkeying with stock builds to make 'Mechs work after negatively impacting base weapon bulk would create forum outrage beyond anything we normally see.
Besides. I'm not convinced snubs are overperforming so much as simply finally viable, and everybody's having fun with the new toy. Especially because everybody assumes it's going to be knocked on the head and sent back to the graveyard so they're using them while they can.
