Every time I load the game I get what I call "shader pausing" on each map until I have played that map at least two times.

I have pauses in the game for 1-5 secs every 50-120 seconds and I see that the game is reading heavily off the drive during these pauses when I look at certain parts of the maps. I have made a habit of doing several 360's after the drop to force the client to see various shaders before I leave the spawn now as well.

I seem to remember some old term called "warming up the shaders" for certain games in that the GPU needs load some parts of the shaders into memory during gameplay? I have tried running the repair tool as well however that just flushes out existing/old shaders and the system still has to load the shaders as before anyways.

Is this common for everyone or just because I run the game off a standard SATA with a 6GB GPU instead of a SSD?

Is there any other fix for this or do I have to so some crazy stuff like load a mech into each map on the training grounds and run around forcing the shaders to load or just accept that I will be a sitting duck in battle for 1-5 seconds many times until I have played each map two times?

The game does load up some shaders when you first play a map but after that it should be fine for the rest of the play session. If by standard sata you mean a mechanical hard drive then yes its going to take longer than if it was pulling from an ssd. The good thing is that sata ssd are dirt cheap nowadays and you can pick up a 240/512 gig typically for $20~30 if you catch a sale.

SSD certainly helps to speed things up when massive reads are needed...

For me, even with SSD, there's a noticeable shader pausing when the creek water texture is loaded...just before you go up that small creek @G9 in Forest Colony...

1. Try MrVaad's MWOConfig - Cryengine Config Editor for MWO, which is defacto legal for MWO...
https://mwomercs.com...-editor-for-mwo
~Sets environmental variables to minimum, reduces shaders, etc.

2. I personally set "all" video settings to "minimum", including MWO ingame screen resolution to 1280x720.

After all that's said + done, my PC outfit finally has greatly reduced shader pausing, and much better MWO ingame performance!

Might want to give my preset a try too as feedback says it improves stability and smooths out the game. I've tried in on an older system of i5 4670k and gtx 960 on a 1080p screen and it runs a solid locked 60 so if you have a bit older hardware it shouldn't choke out your system.

Indeed, I have done all this, low settings, custom CE configs, etc. I get a solid 60-100FPs on 90% of the maps until I look at certain areas and I can see the FPS drop to 20-30 FPS and "pauses" occur. Again, this only happens for the 1st two runs on any given map and then the pauses no longer occur.

Have you contacted the MWO Support as I suggested?

The latest of the NVidia drivers caused a problem like this for me. Reset to previous version and worked just fine; current driver update does nothing to improve MWO anyway so hang on to the next update version.
