LRM's, ATM's are easy mode and not great! They are spam weapons, but if done right have their place for sniper suppression and support.

Too many campers who hide behind a hill and let other mechs take damage while they steal kills.
When a team boats it's almost impossible depending on the map. LRMs could be cool, letting off a salvo of 40 missiles should be destructive!

Target sharing off, could change the dynamic of the game for other weapons and play styles.
Might be worth a test?

Suggestion!
  • Remove target sharing
  • Mech must have LOS
  • TAG, NARC or Command Console must be used to share targets
  • Possibly reduce command console weight for lights or make a new light version
  • Give good perks for mechs who equip and assist with lock ons
  • Buff the weapons damage as mechs have to work harder for the lock on
  • Make TAG toggle an option
  • Maybe have existing system for T5 (but i assume the change has to be across the board

Not needed. By the time you advance in play to Tier 3, you will essentially be unable to fire these weapons due to prevalence of ECM and Radar Deprivation. The only exception to that will be 3-4 man teams with a dedicated spotter. You’ll see.

LRMs/ATMs can be easy mode in Tier 5, but when you leave Tier 5, you are going to find out that LRMs/ATMs are less and less powerful. Actually, they can be useless in some higher-Tier games.

Also, you can hardly suppress enemy sniper with your LRMs, if such sniper peeks out from behind his rock, unloads 50 points of damage into your face and disappears behind his cover before you can even dream about getting the lock for your LRMs.

Playing since 2013, played in comp for many years against the best teams. Don't need new player help.

LRM's just suck to use, target sharing for everyone is easy mode. Target sharing for all mechs isn't a thing by default in tabletop either.
You must use Narc, Tag or command console master and salve. Actually forgot about that the slave units, they could be lighter for recon mechs.

LRM and ATM suck and are easy mode weapons for plebs. As I said if done right would have their place for support fire but some noob or veteran alike should not be able to park behind a hill and hurl salvos of 4x20 lrm without having to work a little or at the cost of using command consoles, tag or narc. That would be teamwork and most pilots don't want to use teamwork.

Game needs a little change up, the least the cauldron could do is test it. That is if the devs are able to make changes like that.

Like making direct fire an insta-lock and making indirect fire depend entirely on having a spotter, possibly with dedicated equipment? That's beyond what the devs are staffed to do right now because that changes the code behind the lock on mechanic entirely.

That's why I'm plugging for fixes that only take changing values in a spreadsheet. THAT they can do. Reducing each of the five Radar Deprivation nodes from 20% to 15% and increasing missile velocity will enable people to get hits with missiles again. The velocity increase and a reduction in direct fire scatter will make them viable in direct fire mode, even without a lock.

Oh, is it not?

Total Warfare p. 111: "LRM Indirect Fire".

Units armed with LRM-type weapons may fire those missiles indirectly. Indirect fire allows a unit without a direct line of sight to a target to attack that target, though a friendly unit must have a valid line of sight to the target (this unit is referred to as the spotter)

Spotters do not need to be equipped with any special equipment such as C3. A single spotter can only spot a single target, but multiple mechs can use that spotting for firing upon the target. Spotting in Total Warfare is effectively treated as similar to a weapon attack on a target by the spotter without using its own weapons.

Various modifiers exist for resolving the damage effect on a target, which are modeled to some extent in MWO due to the missile model behavior and the requirement of the spotting unit to actively target the unit ("hit R"). In MWO effectively every friendly unit acts as a spotter, just as it should be.

Some supporting equipment acts differently and especially with regard to ECM has been nerfed into the ground in comparison in MWO:
  • Per p.138 indirect fire through spotting is not possible for ATMs
  • Per p.139 a target that has successfully been NARCed may be indirectly fired upon without a spotter. NARC does not expire.
  • Per p.142 implicitly TAG does not have an effect on LRM indirect fire, i.e. only works when the LRM boat is in LOS as well.
  • Per p.142 ECM and Stealth do not have any effect on spotting or targeting, i.e. ECM/Stealth mechs can be wooshed like anyone else (note: the only effect ECM has on LRMs is shutting off Artemis).
  • Per p.146 pilots with jammed weapons (RACs) may not spot or use TAG until unjammed.
What Total Warfare does not have in comparison to MWO is UAVs, which effectively act as a stationary spotter without the single-target limitation. To some extent this is a (not necessarily balanced) info warfare tradeoff to the massive ECM buff in MWO.

You can find some beginner explanation of the indirect fire rules in Battletech tabletop here:

As a LRM player I'd be perfectly fine with going entirely to the tabletop rules there. It wouldn't be hard to either. Just remove ECM and UAVs from the game.

Sorry, you lost me when you said that "LRM's just suck to use" AND "LRMs are easy mode".

LOL yes it does take some skill to play LRMs, and nice to have some one help with the LIGHTS, WHAT is the time to learn this.
THERE IS a learning curve, i bet its about 3 months or `1000 drops and you need team support, and help building a 2 weapon system build, then learn to to be a team member --- or friend , and start to kick ##S

And I’ll say it again, the current dev team does not have the manpower needed to completely overhaul the current state of info warfare and lock on mechanics. We can realistically expect only small adjustments.

Reduce Radar Dep nodes from 20% to 15%, decrease spread of direct fire LRMs and ATMs, increase velocity of same. This would restore a bit of indirect fire without inviting sky cancer to rain upon us, and would buff the ability of these missiles to dumb-fire without a lock in LOS.
