Well the only Battletech series was the 90s cartoon, and that was pretty awful. For serious mech stuff I have a few recommendations though.

There's the Hawken webseries that starts next year:

One series I CANNOT RECOMMEND ENOUGH is Armored Trooper VOTOMS. It's one of the more realistic robot animes (well, up until the end), and there are no flashy moves or actually invincible pilots - even the genetically engineered super-soldiers can lose to an elite soldier. The mechs are also FAR from invincible - while they're pretty mobile they can get taken down by infantry with RPGs. Most of the series takes place on the surface, but the only clip I could find was one of the few space battles. No flashy moves here - the main character actually gains the advantage by just planting himself so he can aim properly while the other guys just kind of float around and are sluggish to change direction:

Some more, since there is a video clip limit:

The original Gundam series compilation movies were good, as was Gundam Zeta (it's sequel). The mechs aren't quite as stompy, but they're nowhere near the zippy acrobats piloted by invincible protagonists that the more recent series have. Here's a clip from Zeta to give you an idea if you might like it or not:

Blue Comet SPT Layzner kind of fits, although it does have an alien invasion. It might fit the bill. It's made by the guy that did VOTOMS, too. I couldn't find a good clip, but here's the wikipedia link if you want to check it out.

My last recommendation is Gasaraki. It's another one I'm not really sure is similar enough to battletech, but does have pretty realistic robots (though there is some background mystic stuff going on, and it goes more in that direction as the series goes on). It's not my favorite, but I did enjoy it and it had some FANTASTIC action scenes. The following clip isn't english subtitled, but it's a good example of what I really enjoyed about the series:

For some "Hard Sci-fi" mecha action there is Moble Suit Gundom: The 08th MS Team, Patlabor, Robotech and Macross Plus, and Exosquad. For some "Soft Sci-fi" and somtimes sillier mecha action there is Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Gunbuster 1 & 2, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. 08th MS Team is probably the best out of the list if you are looking for realistic mecha combat.

Dai Gaurd is also a happy medium between the two. It's a giant robot fighting space monsters, but it focuses on stuff like property damage and cleanup, everyday work while not fighting space monsters, interdepartmental conflicts and how some typical giant robot weapons are....shall we say.....less than practical:

Can't Believe no one has mentioned Moblile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team... It's easily one of the best (if not THE best) Gundam series produced.

It's probably the most realistic view of Gundams as tools for war, instead of "super robots" like they've been turned into. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it.

You can check out Super Dimensional Fortress Macross on hulu (http://www.hulu.com/...7304#s-p6-so-i0) if you want to see some hot LAM action (pixies stingers wasps) and also those Marauders, Warhammers and Archers!

Battletech is Battletech and there's no giant robot substitute for it.

You need to read sci-fi books and not rely on bad cartoons. It's important to know the story.

I'd like to see Piranha implement an Axman, which was a lead mech in the crappy cartoon.

Lol i was going to make this exact same post as soon as i saw the thread title. literally word for word.

Even as a teen i wasnt ever into all the spsce type psycho gundam combat but 8th ms team gundam left a lifelong impression on me.back then. i remember really liking it for its realistic approach great story and purity.

Another thing that has left a good impression on me is the first city fight in robotech, when the robots lean on the buildings and they crumble.

There are some other great short Gundam series that are like 08th MS team. 0080 War in the pocket and 0083 Stardust Memories come to mind.

Awesome! Thank you all for the suggestions, seems I have quite a bit more to watch now. Regarding books, I would consider books, because have no idea where to start.

some of the battletech books are great, i'd suggest D.R.T or Decision at thunder rift, as those are 2 of my favorites, but i'd also say stay well the hell away from the "dark age of mechwarrior" books as those are steaming turds

Wow... I mean... wow... Hopefully PGI can get the rights to these and C&D youtube.

Wow....

Under the DMCA, a takedown (not a C&D) notice has to be sent to YouTube. YouTube takes it down and notifies the uploader, the uploader can respond with a counter-notice that he does indeed have the right to distribute the work. Even figuring out who owns the rights would be hard, since it was made by Saban for Fox, but most likely at the behest of FASA and based on Stackpole's "Blood of Kerensky" trilogy. Purchasing the rights just for a takedown would be a waste of money since there is no product to sell (niche product plus animation age ghetto).

As for a good giant robot series, I always preferred Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. The entire series is awesome (not the 'Mech) without any filler (Gundam SEED had that every fifth episode of obvious filler).
