Collision damage is mostly pointless as is. It's a couple of points? All it serves to do is be annoying when teammates lightly breeze past your leg in spawn (which is frustrating on lights and other mechs that have low leg armor to begin with). It should both be made more serious and in the process give the hatchetman a thematic buff.

Reasons to implement it:

It's already in the game, surely the number can be changed like any other weapon balance?
If you run out of ammo, or are a stick, you can still contribute (at the personal risk of being point blank range).

It would be a soft counter to lights, especially if there was a sliding scale of damage based on weight class. If the light decides to hug your legs instead of strafe, it takes damage. This allows assaults to counter a bit, but would still keep lights' strength of poking, running circles with superior agility, and wolfpacking.

There should be reciprocal damage. Metal crashing into metal would still hurt the attacker, but perhaps with the target taking extra "charge damage" based on speed. This again would take into account weight and be less optimal than using weapons in order to discourage reckless crashing, perhaps with damage buffs to thematic mechs.

The hatchetman could perhaps not take this reciprocal damage, or just do a heavy mech's worth of damage while being a medium.

I think this would both make people happy with the lack of melee and partially buff assaults, albeit only a little (a king crab wont catch a flea unless it is careless).

The right thread for complaining that light 'Mechs are OP and should be nerfed is here: Light Mechs Are Screwed Up

... because the most powerful, the most protected and the most successful class of 'Mechs in MWO really needs to be buffed. Posted Image

Funny, OP mentions the very reason that this is a bad idea in his very first paragraph ... and then proceeds to advocate to buff the already strongest weight class even further while expressing the desire to nerf the weakest weight class even further.

Just brilliant ...
