I started as a light & medium player (still my favorite weight classes) and was wondering why assaults play the way they play. Later I played assaults myself and I unterstood everything! Be in their shoes for a few dozen games and you will too.

Some snippets of my experience:
- NASCARing your teams assaults to death
- Calling for a push or waiting for one then when I or some assaults push and get shot at everyone runs back into their cover and lets the big guys die
- As an assault sticking with the blob, trading shots. And when the big fight breaks out and I fully engage with the other team, I find myself suddenly all alone. Everyone else suddenly left leaving me and maybe another poor assault all alone with their main force
- Lights and other fast mechs running straight forward for a fight, engaging very early and therefore dying. And then they are berating assaults for not engaging while the assaults didn't even had time to leave the spawn. Not everyone is running at 150 kph

@OP,

Without seeing how your matches played out, it’s difficult to understand what actually happened.

Good hunting,

Each time i'd play assault in the front, i'd just be left to die by a nascaring team. Its the team that should stay with assault, not the other way around. If you see assaults holding back, their firepower is most likely based on longer range, and they should not just rush in close range to do less damage they would normally do. If you see assault holding back, you should hold back with them too until its your time to shine. They can ''share a fight" from longer range too. They can share their armor from longer range too. Just stick with them, dont expect them to stick with you. As a lighter than assault pilot, you have higher initiative too.

Stop hanging back in a Gauzzila..

That said the modern meta of sniping does not favor Assault mechs design to brawl so they could be waiting for people to join in but no one does because they are all sniping like you say you are..

i think the best erll boat i have on the is side is a warhammer. not even an assault.

What people who defend this assault behaviour forget is: armour sharing

I have had quite a few matches where the last survivors were 2-3 assaults with nearly full armour. Of course they were rolled then. If you do not share armour, your teammates get focus fired which means you will most likely lose.

TBH I am wondering why I still play. Between the number of ******** cheaters, the incessant NASCAR GAGSGASGAS bull, and Assault pilots running like screaming girls from the slightest threat to their pristine paintjob and throwing mediums under the bus, not to mention the awful netcode and long wait times, the game is just getting unplayably bad.

Genuinely curious what cheaters you run into? Been playing a bit over a year now and not once have I thought someone was remotely suspicious.

You know you can guarantee that they are present to armor share if you stay with them.

Is it not enough to be the pot calling the kettle black? Must you then also fight with the kettle and undermine your whole team based on perceived slights?

Having someone quarterbacking a match helps a ton; whether it is teams where most of their heavy hitters are busy hiding behind each other in the back, or to stop a lance of fast movers running off early and getting killed, leaving you down 0-4 in the kill game.

I have to admit, I don't often step up to quarterback, but just yesterday, twice, I called out when we had a full assault lance sitting still in a Conquest match and not contributing, and both times they chose to get moving and get involved - and we got good results.

Even in a random quickplay match, group mentality can very quickly set in, and if it's a fear-based mentality all about not dying, it really drags a team down. Same with selfish, ineffective snipers (as opposed to effective ones), who just park and wait for the battle to come to them, and for perfect shots to present themselves - sometimes one guy is seen doing that and then quickly half the team is sitting in the back doing nothing, as they suddenly feel this is acceptable behavior in this group.

Maybe some clear, but encouraging, work on the comms would help?

Is it just me, or is there a notable tendency for Assault pilots to hang back and refuse to do their share of fighting? Im only asking after noticing this trend for several weeks, the match will be well under way, my mech and usually several other lighter mechs on my team will be badly damaged, having been fighting the enemy and doing our level best, but the Assaults are all almost pristine, with maybe 4% overall damage at the worst, and yet they will sit back and hide, refusing to take part in the fight.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Did those assault mechs do less than you and those others who did YOLO style assault with fast mechs? If not then those assaults did their share of fighting and you and those few lighter mechs rushed too far too fast and took unnecessary damake.

It is stupidly common to see some pirates bane rush 1km in front of enemy team and get blown to smithereens before anyone else in their team has even seen an enemy.

I played 10+ games with HGR Anni in December... I was left alone because those lights, mediums and heavies totally left me under the buss each game and every other slow assault also.

With that experience I won't ever again play frontline assault unless I have at least one battlebuddy in similar build.

It's called "reversed balance". Lights and Mediums are the tankiest 'Mechs in this game,

This made me laugh too much. Made my day. I wish my lcts and jr7s could tank 800 worth of damage to the st and legs. My atlas is having a good day it it can take 500 damage before dropping like the 100t free kill me building it is. If you have a video of an urbie or lct solo-ing an entire fresh team in qp winning with an ace of spades 12-0 do share. I'm sure everyone here would love to see it.

I freely admit my teammates can tilt me, too, but your conduct in this thread has pretty much proven to me you're the exact kind of person I hate playing with. Get your head screwed on right and try to have *fun*.

Assaults are not cowardice! Just slow...
So, if yer alwayz left yer assaults behind and dash forth to die... Why the blame all the way?!

Or could we also revert it? Like lights are dumb?
Lights dash forth, die and blame others to let them die?

Or apply similar statements upon mediums and heaviez?

Oh, I see now!
Elementals are coward because they lurk behind while others die in front!
What, they cruising with 10kph? Whodamnbloodycarez?!

Sarcastic and trolling? Sure... Just like the topic almost alltogether!
+ U still would not luv me after such replies, ja? I knew, dudes ye hate me! :P

Actually, it can be summed up simply:

"Why doesn't this random player in an online game play the way I want them to play?"

'Nuff said.

Just saw some of this in a match I just played. As soon as they got shot, they turned and hid behind a building. It didn't matter that the rest of the team was there helping, they left. Oh noes! My paint job!

Now, I can understand the ones that are out there sniping and I have no problem with it in most situations. This wasn't that kind of situation.

ScrapIron Prime, is this the way I wanted them to play? Nope! But, assaults are not meant for peeking in and out of buildings. They are, generally, to slow for that. When the opposing mechs are within small laser range, they should be out there with the rest of the team trying to kill the enemy, not hiding.
