ok here is my story,
I just played a quickplay match as an ANH on grim plexus
after a good battle where i lost both torsos but inflicted good damage and got a few kills, there was just my lance left against a fresh timberwolf who was patrolling their base, (we were playing incursion)
our base was down to its final two buildings, I only had a center torso ppc left, so i communicated with my team; you guys go hit their base, i will watch ours in case he gives you guys the slip and comes to finish our base off.
I power off and wait in ambush in case he shows up.
after 3 minutes of sitting there, (my lance is still making their way over there) i get hard booted to mech lab saying i have a penalty for team damage or leaving matches. I am unable to rejoin the match.
this is really fishy because I did absolutely no team damage.
Do you get automatically booted if you stay powered off for too long?
What even happened?

You can power off whole match and not get penalized as long as you stay in the game... Other players can report you for it but that you won't get any instant punishment if you even get any.
You can also TK your whole team and same thing, no instant penalty.
I'd guess your case is some weird disconnect'ish issue.

thats what i thought too, but my internet was up and i got booted to mech lab, not login screen, and it gave me the penalty screen with a 10 second timer when i tried to rejoin.
that probably hurt my pilot rating too
the worst part is, i have no idea how that match finished, i swear he was coming to finish the base off

You cannot be booted out of your QP match due to inactivity.
You must have somehow disconnected from MWO game server during QP, and failed to reconnect, for which you get a small time penalty on your first instance of this. (Your time penalty gets progressively heavier for each and every disconnect thereafter within a 24-hour period).
(This time penalty timer is also linked to team damage, for which I've heard it kicks in every 60-damage units).

About the same time myself and 5 of my teammates got booted instantly, but we were all able to rejoin.
* Edit: And I just got a 'hung' error and booted again, so maybe the servers had something dodgy for supper? lol

During a match, you maintain two steady server connections.
1. the match server, that is located either in NA, EU or OC
2. the authentification server, that hosts your account information and is located in NA
what may have occured is that the connection to the match server was interrupted and the other was not.

welcome to MWO where there is at least 1 disconnect per match since beta...

DC to mechlab isn't so bad. Probably just dropped too many packets.
DC + crash sucks, especially if you have to load back in your 200ish mechs which takes longer than the entire rest of the boot and dropping into the match.
The ones that annoy me the most though are when the game will randomly freeze up my dsp, which freezes up the game until I can power cycle it and get task manager to change the focus.
