Take a look at the number 1 ranked player on Jarls. Ever heard of that person? Ever see them in a game? Because i haven't. To me, this seems extremely suspect.. maybe im wrong, maybe there is a guy who is the best player in the game despite only playing 10-20 drops per month.

Every time I make a new pilot I end up in T2 without really paying attention, but I don't make new pilots to farm newbs. I was leveling up a bunch of mechs last week, and here I am at T2 again. I've been in T1 a few times, but I have to only play my best mechs/builds, and I enjoy variety and tinkering too much for that. I get board just playing the same mechs/builds over and over. BTW, ECM stalker with 6xLPL (or 3LPL 2ERPPC, or 3LPL 3ERLL) is a really good one to level up your tier, actually- most mechs with high cockpit and high weapon mounts are great for leveling up your tier because there are so many places where hill poking is necessary.

All this is very detrimental to my Tier. I can drive down the road 1/4 mile, and play in my vehicle and get a great signal, but I can't drink alcohol and play if I do that... I can also play in my deer hunting cabin with a pretty good signal, but it's on solar/battery and takes a week to recharge after a night of playing.First world problems.

Ikr? I've tried playing suboptimal mechs and builds just to see if I could stay in tier 5 a little longer for the shizz n giggles and it doesn't matter. Situational awareness is atrocious and even mechs that would die in a fire in tier 3 or higher perform like they are meta.

Different players have different skill sets.. Also a lot of MWO are aging (at least in tier 5 and 4) and not really up to par on high shooters these days.. Its about casual fun for many, being farmed isn't why people play.

pick worst trial mech there is and you gotta work really hard to do good with those .

Ok say that the chat comments that are almost universally positive are not representative of the entire roster for the match and I really am driving off players who are silent and don't complain in chat. When I run an alt for an event I might play it a few hours in a row every few days until the even ends. So even with low pop the odds of me being in anyone's particular match more than a few times are quite rare. So for a tier 1 slumming it with smurf alts to become an issue would mean that there would have to be a large number of them playing all day long every single day for it to have any chance of effecting anyone but random selections of players and I don't see any evidence of that.

The trial 'mechs are bad, but they're not that bad.

I do wonder if you can get out of tier 5 driving a stock UM-R60 UrbanMech, but I've already got one alt account devoted to hating myself, I don't need another even worse one.

yea that sounds like hell. i live in alaska but we connect directly to a major trunk line, so local congestion is practically non existent and the connection is solid for the most part. we do have high ping times though. it has to circle down to the lower 48 and back into canada to get to the na server, you just cant run cable through a wall of glaciers. the au server and euro server are both around 200ms and na is around 150. people with two digit ping times got it easy. but i aint leaving ak over that. the fishing is too good.

I guess what im not getting is the reason for making new pilots/account in the first place. There is no restriction on using your main account as much as you like, so the only reasons i can think of to make alt accounts are:

• Lore / Roleplay (only having Clan mechs on one account and IS on the other)
  
• To get easier matches on account of lower tier (to preserve stats on main account, smurf leaderboards or just farm newbs the giggles)
  
• (in)famous main account wanting to fly under the radar

Am i missing a reason?

Not seeing how thats helpful. The freebies can only be used on the account they are acquired on, and i honestly cant see how its better to have, for example, a Black Widow + camo + etc, on 2 accounts than it is on one. So.. nah, not really buying that as a legit reason.

I don't see any point in looking deeper into it because it shows no signs of changing. Someone says they do it to farm freebies, I take their word for it, because it's not changing regardless of the reasons given. Maybe they're fig-leafing their pugstomping. Maybe they're using an alt to go incognito on their unit mates they don't feel like playing with that day. Maybe they're into lorewank, maybe they don't want to spend MC on mechbays. It doesn't really matter. Learn to cultivate abject apathy towards these things. Towards a LOT of things in MWO, really.

Im not expecting anyone to stop doing anything, though (as per the original reason for the thread) i do think PGI should stop creating an additional incentive to be a potato farmer.

Edit: Also, for personal reasons, apathy is hard. I go from normal to absolutely, stupidly, insanely furious over the tiniest, most objectively unimportant things in ~2 seconds at the moment (i could explain why, but im.. not going to on a public forum)

Yup being able to view rankings by tier/psr would be great. It'd actually be a pretty interesting new piece of data to perform analysis with - like how do win/loss ratios change per weight class from one tier to another. It'd also do what you suggested OP, and incentivise T1 alts to maybe play a bit more fairly when starting a new alt.

Well ironically the best way to play 'fairly' with a new alt you intend to push into tier 1 is to go all out and turbo into tier 3 asap. No one is going to rage quit the game because some rando owned them. That already happens every match anyways. It's kinda odd because the same blowouts and curbstomps happen in tier 5 just the same as tier 1. The difference is that it usually takes a bit longer in the low tiers to get to that point in any given match due to more hesitation to push out when you have the advantage.

the concept of using qp leaderboards for anything is rediculous. if you want to increase your score, its too easy to just get a group of 3 other solid players and exclusively play with them. thatll bump you way up, forsure.
