Maybe the light 'mechs, can't say I remember the last time I looked at a light trial 'mech. Any of the heavier trial 'mechs would do fine in tier 5, since just having lots of guns works, even if those guns are mixed together in silly kitchen sink builds.

I made mine for meme purposes, to see what tier I'd end up in with while arbitrarily restricting my builds. Having a blank slate of map/weapon stats is an interesting bonus.

I think double rewards maybe makes sense in terms of being able to spend event MC on buying a hero on one account, and a different one on another, assuming you can be bothered with that. There's probably a wide variety of valid reasons for making alts, but I also think the most common (and very pathetic) reason is to mash potatoes.

My meme-est build is an Arctic Cheetah with ecm and two PPC, oddly enough it works extremely well despite having almost no armor.

I guess what im not getting is the reason for making new pilots/account in the first place. There is no restriction on using your main account as much as you like, so the only reasons i can think of to make alt accounts are:
  • Lore / Roleplay (only having Clan mechs on one account and IS on the other)
  • To get easier matches on account of lower tier (to preserve stats on main account, smurf leaderboards or just farm newbs the giggles)
  • (in)famous main account wanting to fly under the radar
Am i missing a reason?

I made my alts for a few reasons, NONE for farming newbs.

One of which was for testing grounds.

Another reason was for my kids, for when they got old enough to play. Sadly my youngest (6 years old) is the only one who is eager to play. Her first MWO match she got 13th place over all, and one kill, using a PPC Arctic Wolf! (proud parent of a future T1 mechwarrior!) She played several hours of MW5 beforehand, but has been playing WASD + mouse games since she was 3 years old.

https://twitter.com/...869165519736833

Another reason is when I come up with an awesome pilot name.

I cycle through a few accounts every time there is a new free mech, usually 2 or 3 accounts, sometimes more. I always end up at T2 if I play the account long enough.

I don't see that as a problem, at least with the new Tier system. I love the free mech every month, especially when the event overlaps, so I can get two for one.

I'm not going to expose her pilot name, but yeah... I think I have a right to brag a little.

This game needs new players, even if I have to make them from scratch.

ETA:If you hear someone sounds like a little kid, sometimes they are, so when I ask people to not use foul language in game it's not because I'm being a Karen.

as a pretty much life long T3 player (ok i got to upper T2 before the whole PSR switch but that doesn't count) i honestly have to say that i think the Leaderboard should be tier restricted. so say you want to look at them well you first have to select what tier board you want to look at then it gives you the leaderboard for that tier. perhaps even a further division between FP and QP. i am honestly not sure if the second exists or not. i have never in my many years of playing this game ever even looked at the leaderboards since i play for fun and not some arbitrary number. i couldn't care less how i rank next to everyone else as long as i am having fun. now how it would calculate i would say that as soon as you rank up to the next tier it resets and tosses out everything you did before that tier. honestly this would really prevent "gaming the system" so to speak since all those people who start new alts just to pad their LB rank get stuck in that low tier leaderboard. (if i even cared about how well i ranked against other players it would be how well i rank against those in my tier not those above and below it.)

(a bit of note as long as a match isn't a one sided stomp i almost always end it with at least one kill, more if you count KMDD. though i always often die before the end of the match as well. usually because i got to aggressive or some other mistake.)

anymore though i only come back during events and even then i sometimes don't finish them if i am not really interested in the rewards. i do love MWO but as i get older i more and more just don't find myself enjoying PvP games. MWO is the only one i still play. (Used to play For Honor for a while but it got repetitive real quick a problem that just comes with 90% of PvP games.)

EDIT: mind you my suggestion would only effect the in-game LB and not something like Jarls.

If leaderboards are gameable to this extent and not indicative of anything worth noting then removal from public view might be a good option if simply ignoring them is off the table what with comparison being the thief of contentment that it is.

The leaderboards are doing their job. They display the players in the order of their relative performance. If alts are making it to the top then that only means that those alts are being played by good players? Making an alt isn't an auto leaderboard trump card that someone of any skill can do after all. Also most I would imagine that make an alt only focus on meta mechs and are applying all their previous knowledge and leveraging it on a fresh slate. I'd be higher ranked on this account if I only played meta mechs but I like to piss around and experiment or just log a few sessions of lazy play using lrms. The other accounts are pretty much pure meta one mech play only and you can get in a seriously good groove if you specialize in one mech. I mean its easy to make an alt so why not try it out yourself? See if its as easy to rise into the top 500 as you claim?

edit; haha checked my meep meep stats and it just goes to show that heavies and assaults print psr.. In march I played only heavies and assaults and was quite meh in them I must say yet it still gave me a 29% boost to my leaderboard position. This is why lights have a bonus to scoring because its ~hard~ to consistently get them to perform at top level given their fragile nature. I've had plenty a match in my fle20 where I do everything right but still get oneshot by some rube in a direwhale or other mega alpha ppfld build. Heavy and assault mechs let you absorb it so you can continue to fight.

I'm repeating other claims made here and elsewhere, and arguably your unstated underlying sentiment with the previous two posts. I have no desire to attempt to become part of what you facetiously called "the problem", nor likely the ability anyway, so the point is moot. Go run victory laps for your prizes in whatever manner suits you, it's not against any rules nor is it likely to become so.

The only prize for me is enjoyment and the free mechs and items you get from the events sit unused.

It's fun to only run a light mech and make it perform well as a personal challenge.

Ok, so if you feel its far too easy then roll a fle20 only alt and see how quickly you can rise? I bet you stall out at tier 3. Posted Image

As a dedicated light player do you consider the Osiris any better now?

Absolutely. If this had ecm I'd play it all the time and even without ecm its quite good with the superb high mounts for poking.

osr-2v

Sadly the rest are still kinda meh compared to other fast jj lights.(yes the sehkmet is still terrible..) Though the I've spectated this build a few times and its great as a pack beast. Not to my taste as I prefer ranged builds.

osr-1v

If they want to make the sekhmet usable vs any of the other varients it needs some sort of specialization and to me this would be it.

osr-sederp..

Change the quirks to add a +1 lppc hsl and get rid of the laser duration for a velocity bonus and maybe a heat bonus.

Oh lol.. I do that sometimes with that site. Was wondering why everything fit so well.. Posted Image

Still I'd take something similar to this with lppc quirks.

osr-se

Messing about I think this could work if it has a mech top speed quirk that gives it a 140+ kph top speed after full speed tweak and limit the engine size so you don't stick in a max size and break the physics engine. Same idea with the general energy and lppc quirks with a +1 hsl and heat reduction. Maybe a jj bonus to make the single jj just a bit more effective though for general poptarting one is fine on this mech if you are using lppc since you don't have duration to worry about.

Im not going to do that, because i consider it to be extremely cheesy and borderline cheating (to be clear, im aware no rules are being broken)..

but ive seen how i perform in T5 games the occasional times i end up in them (due to a low tier unit mate in group) and Id pretty much guarantee that in meds/heavies/assaults, id comfortably be capable of top 10 by avg matchscore. Probably lights as well, though the only lights i ever play are things like Adders and Panthers which are effectively played like mediums, im sure id be terribad in a flea or locust.

As a T1 playing other T1s, i think im a bit above average, but im significantly outclassed by the really top tier players.

Theirs a bigger related problem here. New player retention. Every singly snarky Tier 1 response is an example of how the community is killing off its base. Once you reach tier 2 you should simply only be able to start a new account at that Tier level and extra accounts shouldn't even be counted by the leader boards. If this game doesn't start giving new players fun instead of just being farmed by more experienced players then the numbers start to fail, as they have. Wait times keep going up while the system continues to reward exploitation of the game by people who don't need it but find it gratifying to dominate at the expense of new players fun and learning curve, vs have real competition with equally skilled players. The leader boards would be fine as long as duplicate accounts don't qualify for it. You cant use a duplicate account for competition so why not apply that to the leader board as one of many steps needed to keep the new players having fun at least until they have a few hundred games in.
another way to help new players is to have a "Rookie tier" That only real new players can fight each other and start to learn the game. Lastly, a completely new approach for upper tier players to strive for, IE maps only certain high tier players can access, game modes only for the upper tiers and designed from their suggestions. New Music, voice overs, added features and rewards for current and returning players so they don't need to farm newbies for fun. End goal is to rebirth this game into one with enough players that people are actually playing faction play, fighting one on one with challenge invites to fight and to spectate. concepts you already have just need improving. Please add ideas to this list and help us all keep this game around for a long time to come.

Problem is that being in a coordinated group pretty much automatically raises you at least one Tier. Sometimes more.

You would get solid Tier 3-4 players getting stuck in T2. Posted Image

If PGI even considers it enough of a problem to care about, wouldn't the easiest solution be to just link accounts based on ip/machine id?
From there if they find problem accounts they can just stop tracking stats on the smurf accounts, if it continues just zero out the stats on the main.

If the goal is to produce leader board stats then there is a clear disincentive to smurf..

perhaps but its still a relevant topic so i se nothing wrong with it. better than making a whole new one on it.

on another note i still think the best way to disinsentivise such abuse is to divide the leaderboards by tier. have it simply reset one's stats (as far as leaderboard looks at) once you reach a new Tier lvl. if nothing else it would show us how prevalent or not such abuse is. i don't think it would be all that hard to implement either. then again it would also require a leaderboard reset. hell PGI could then have rewards based on tier Leaderboard position. (not sure if there is any rewards for leaderboards or not since i have never looked at them let alone checked if there was.)
