Again old timer returning after a 3 year lapse. Have played several months and haven't found any developers playing anymore.

Do they still game once in a while or at special events?

Sometimes I saw Krazzdaxx or Frost_Byte in matches. Didn't see any others.

And how to identify them? Previously I remember their clan was PIR or something like that. Players would go out of their way to kill them first. Felt sorry for the guys.

I'm betting they very rarely if ever use their official accounts in live server. They'd probably get tk-ed or mobed for "free" things. Using a normal account would get them ability to just play the game with out the mob hysteria of omh a dev! Decades ago they had a dev event where if you killed the dev without it being a tk you'd win like a bade or cockpit trinket.

The only time I remember the devs being in the game (when they gave a dam about the game) was decades ago in the beta. One was playing, died early and just happen to spectate my brother who was in a shot up jenner. He died not from gun fire but "fall damage" just from running around the map as lights tend to do over a small hill.

Dev: "that happen a lot?"
Bro: "very, good luck not dying when your legs that much shot up."
next patch:Lights all get leg armor buff and "fall damage" increase.

Krazzdaxx is ingame MWO as we speak right now ;)
(I can see him in my Friend List for MWO ingame)

I MWO-friended him shortly after he was on board, and he accepted my friend invite.
Even chatted with him a little a while back, and my impression was that he's very eager improve MWO ;)
(What he talked about in general was implemented into MWO by now!)

Saw a PGIx group dropping a bunch of matches a few weeks back. They were getting harassed by drunk people. I could understand why they wouldn't play on official accounts much.

The vast majority of PGI devs do not work on MWO and haven't for a few years. The ones that are, like Krazz and Frost are the ones you want to have playing anyway.

There's also the issue of burnout. If you spend 50 hours a week working on a game, you might not really feel like playing it all that much.

Amen.

I've known someone who worked at Disneyland everyday a while ago.
When we went to Disneyland together for an outing, he said that "it did not feel like a holiday to him".
I guess the same goes for the folks working on MWO...

(That said, I personally feel that folks working on MWO needs to understand how MWO is played, who and why MWO players like this game, etc.)

Of course, but that's again, like 2 guys at this point.
The Cauldron honestly is best suited to balance the game because of play hours, bias notwithstanding. But PGI is also going to be biased about their own game too.

I've played pretty consistently the whole time, and honestly, 90% of the time, no one noticed that I was a Dev while I was on my Dev account and in the PGI unit. I handed out Devkill medallion hanging items to any player who killed me and noticed. I was also one of the winners of the original 2012 Devkill event, making me the only Dev to earn a Devkill.

Obviously, these don't cover the time before that system was made, but I was playing from closed beta in the summer of 2012, and was at PGI from October 2015 to May 2022.

Official Dev accounts will have the PGI badge on them and also display in yellow on the end-of-game screen, but the PGI unit is voluntary, and not all devs are in it. I added Russ to it only in about 2019. There are devs who play on anonymous accounts as well. I know Russ has at least one, and that everyone in QA who played was doing it on anonymous accounts. The whole QA team were skilled players in 2018. I suspect only one or 2 of them kept playing much after the shift from MWO to MW5 dev work.
I can't really speak for what it's like now, but in 2021 and early 2022, when MWO was getting dev work back on it, I was the only one playing consistently. Francois played for a while, and occasionally others would join in, but rarely. I never met Krazz, but I've seen him in matches several times.

Yes, it's not easy to go play a game in your spare time when it's also your job. How many people do you know who end their workday and then go enjoy whatever it is that they do for work? It's challenging, and even I found it challenging sometimes when I'd started as a player and love this IP. I still find it challenging to enjoy this game now, after being forced to leave a project I loved because of a toxic work environment.
