I only bring attention to the setting. It's up to you to explore it.

If you want to bring attention then bring attention instead of this kind of hinting of something.

N64 mode is exactly what it sounds like. Super low res textures to the point they are just solid colors but you keep the same mesh resolution. All objects that have a texture are effected. Except mechs. So mechs stand out like a sore thumb with strobe lights attached. I was wondering why it was included in the config but not mentioned at all in the video.. Welp. Posted Image

found another thing to create some petty drama about?
if you are into retro gaming looks and are willing to have worse performance good for you, you found more cfg.

The retro look increases mech visibility and its a performance boost because it reduces texture size down to effectively nothing so even a dodgy integrated gpu could run it.

This is just blatantly cheating. Yeah, i said it. I know its technically not a bannable offense, and im not really going to say it should be, just that it shouldnt be possible. But anyone doing it knows they are cheating, making a game in 2023 look like total sh!t from 1990 purely to get an advantage over others they know mostly wont be doing that.

I was told it actually destroys performance. I saw it in a comp game recording, and aside from making lasers and 'Mechs stand out like nothing else, it also practically eliminates the visual obstruction caused by arty and air strikes. Editing that config needs to be locked down, and any genuine performance boosting properties integrated into the UI.

If someone told you that reducing texture resolution down to virtually nothing gimps performance I would be leery of their intentions.. Posted Image

Then spread the info far and wide and pgi will be forced to address it like they did with the veg removal setting.

That's what it looks like, but it could also use shaders to get some of the effect that cause a performance hit. I've not looked into how the effect is achieved.

The effect is simple to do. You use the games existing cvar variable that sets the texture resolution and turn it all the way down which is far lower than the in game setting allows. All of this could be fixed by revamping the in game graphics settings to allow for the improvements the config allows but then locking out the config completely so you can't use inputs outside the allowed range. But that takes effort and effort costs time and money they don't have budgeted to this particular game.

This is the reason both Forest Colony Classic maps have been removed from rotation and Viridian Bog is getting a rework in the next patch. Hopefully these are just bandaid fixes because the config files should not be editable in a pvp multiplayer game, especially edits that confer such an extreme advantage when vegetation and visual cover is completely removed.

If this is indeed possible, and it almost definitely is, I'm done spending money.

I dont have enough spare time to mess around and find out first hand what it looks like ATM, but if anyone has screenshots...

This Canyon screenshot doesn't appear (to me) to be the best choice to demonstrate whatever bonus this setting may or may not provide.

Static screenshots don't really highlight how easy it is to pick out mechs no matter what their camo when you are in a live environment. It takes like ten minutes tops to enable the user.cfg and n64 mode. Try it yourself.

Within my personal experience (largely informed by the graphic settings I use) camo doesn't play a serious role to begin with. There are maps and light condition where I won't see a mech even if it has a (non-) camo with high contrast colors while at other times I can clearly see a mech with woodland camo against a wood backdrop like forrest section on Forrest Colony,

10 minutes of my time that I don't want to spend to verify your claims. Particularly when you "obviously" have the setting applied and all I'd like to see is a map that supports your claim better.
