I upgraded my daughters video card and when she had Discord running and a game it would crash from time to time no matter what she was playing. I found while troubleshooting that Discord has a setting that uses your video cards GPU. I turned it off and everything runs fine now. We only use Discord for chatting and not posting videos/'streaming so this setting is useless for us. If you have issues with crashes/fps when running Discord and MWO give it a try. Who knows, it might help.


Discord->Settings->Advanced->Hardware Acceleration->turn it off and Discord will then restart.
Settings->Voice & Video->Hardware Acceleration->turn off

Hardware Acceleration=Turns on Hardware Acceleration, which uses your GPU to make Discord smoother. Turn this off if you are experiencing frame drops.

Probably many already know about this but for those who don't just passing the info.

And that’s why I’m not on discord. Their official policy is that they do not mine bitcoin, but they do trade it on the platform and their default setting works your GPU unless you turn it off… which is one sign that they’re using your processing power for a distributed network of… something?

theres really not much money in gpu mining anymore. but im sure there are other ways to exploit compute power, like training ai. thats why they still use captchas (of course in that case you are the compute power).

Several programs are setup to use hardware acceleration (GPU) by default. Besides Discord there is Steam, Edge, Chrome to name a few. Hardware acceleration moves all graphics and text rendering from the CPU to the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU).

This made me laugh a little.

You do know discord uses in-game overlays... nvm lmao the fact that you have a weird theory that makes virtually no sense is just kind of hilarious. If you are that worried get discord and monitor the network traffic for yourself... xD

rendering is a long solved problem. anything 2d is going to be a snooze fest for your gpu. even an overlay. fans dont go whurrrrrrrrrrrrr until it does some heavy lifting.

Any complex application is based on browser engine today. Such as Chromium. And browser engine usually supports hardware acceleration. I have no such problems. Such problems can be caused by faulty video drivers or faulty video card.

or they can be caused by simply giving it work to do beyond just drawing the ui.

ever done photogrammetry? holy **** that makes hardware do work.

there are also hardware codecs if you are recording or streaming video. just decoding hardly hits it at all because a lot of these formats are designed to be easier to decode than to encode.

certain ads can also do it. idk what they are doing but its more than just getting me to buy ****.

modern software either runs on somone else's machine or is loaded with crap, or both. its driven me away from commercial software in a few areas (except for some old pre-cloud software i still use). i dont really trust the open source software either, unless you do a personal audit, you dont know whats in there.

If discord was farming bitcoins or snooping on you then some geek would have figured it out and and made a huge stink about it. Near every browser has a gpu hardware option and its to help with overlays and other gpu heavy tasks that software might not run very well on weak cpu. As to tracking welp everything does that especially if you use smartphone apps.

And giving it some thought, what is your daughter's system configuration, including the PSU? It is possible the GPU upgrade is pushing the PSU's limit. If there wasnt an issue with the older, less power hungry GPU, that would be something to look into, before something actual fails. And was the switch within the same type, ie Nvidia to Nvidia, or switched from Nvidia to AMD, etc?

yea but bitcoin was easier to mine in 2013. now you need an asic at minimum.
