Let's have a fun discussion about MWOs future as a E-sports game? WHAT past or present mech or robot game to you if not MWO you think would represent a good E-SPORT game and could be viable and profitable in today's markets?

My pick would be (Heavy Gear 2) Heavy Gear II - Wikipedia heavy gear 2 - Bing video

I remember HG2... It was riddled with bugs and the AI was hilariously bad. I think my favourite daft moment in that game was having to crouch to avoid detection. My vote would go for Shogo MAD.

Awesome I never played it was too into MW2 but it would have been fun. I guess MWO might have been a good E-Sport game if it had some aspects of these older games you see in HG2 where you could dash behind objects to fight offensively or defensively depending on your objectives in gameplay more like Battlefield or Apex Legends ETC.

P.S I likes the Roller blades and jet packs or ICE blades in the Snow Posted Image in HG2

There is virtually zero appetite for mecha games in eSports. I assume it's something to do with high TTK and slow pace.

Speaking of heavy gear though- HG 1 was built over the Mechwarrior 2 game. There was still MW2 files left all through the install, and the config files still had comments and values referencing mechs. HG 2 was a different engine.

You might be right unless they say took Battlefield and put mech skins on the characters I never knew that about HG1 and I played HG2 first I do remember Mechwarrior3 game play and racing around like playing MWO 6 times its current speed and agility on screen.

This game is too niche for esports or else the twitch streams would draw in more viewers. Mw5 streamers get more views because each mission is pretty fast and more oriented to the current hyper short attention span types.

I agree but for me playing MW5 it reminds me more of playing MW2 and I could never see it as a E-sports or a Multiplayer its great as a single player game co-op umm maybe never tried it co-op .

In the market today Desteny 2 to me is about as close as a mech/robot/Gundam game there is ?

Niche is not an excuse, a good game that is exciting to play / watch and is well advertised will attract players and viewers. I mean look at Farming Simulator, they had their 5th competitive season this year and had a prize pool of €200,000

i view e-sports in mwo as mostly a marketing gimmick. sure you can always find participants and ways to fund prizes (the tsp for example). you might get some viewership. but at the end of the day is it making any money? are sponsors lining up to fund it? i dont see any of that. its a publicity stunt mostly to get people to show up and play the game.

Dude. The gaming world is littered with games that were objectively amazing and still had a small following. The subject matter absolutely counts. Hell, you can extend that to any art form - Blade Runner 2049 bombed at the box office, are we to suggest that it should be more like Barbie? Some things, no matter how good, just aren't interesting to the general population.

Armored Core. No idea about the new one, but the old ones had the arena 1v1 concept baked in. I would think that the new one adapted to 1v1 with some leaning towards counter combat would do well with the pacing of play that I have seen from it.

This game could have had some potential even given its smaller target audience if they ever bothered to develop the game. It's an acceptable tdm game, but extremely thin on the strategy and the maps are all extremely small for the player counts. It also didn't help that they had horrendous balance during their peak years and flowed from that into massive power creep which keeps it unbalanced but in different ways.

They also have many of the core elements they'd need in MW5 to take it that direction if they wanted to shift to full pvp/multiplayer systems. Few too many folks stuck in the loop of needing to keep the stuff they bought for a 10 year old game though I reckon plus I think if done by PGI, Russ would probably have a stroke going through another pvp launch.

Hawken was a gem of a game with a fresh setting and a ton of potential that got squandered by lack of funding and terrible management. Gameplay wise (and in no other way) hawken should be a model for mech games going forward. It felt so good to play.

Hawken was a great game very fun reminded me of HeavyGear2 in a way it was way fun once you got a better mech past the TV set mech lol. You know they have a new version of Hawken, but it is single player only game which on their forums is not going so well with the old player base plus none of your Hawken 1 gear or account is still playable.

Its a microtransaction menace; an obvious attempt by the new owners to just lure people in with nostalgia and try to gouge them for cash without adding any new value. Its pathetic.

Dang that's to bad it came back and is more than likely going to die a second death. I can't help but think of the Solaris game mode for MWO and how fun it could have been with just a few fixes like matches being light Vs light / Mediums Vs Mediums / Heavies Vs Heavies / and Assaults Vs Assaults / then have a round robin event for the winners in their classes once a month for prizes ETC. But all our fantastic game modes in MWO are now all gone, and I totally hate soup que with mixes teams and solo players.

I would rather play the old Solo Quick Play with no teams involved and have a true 8v8 for team play or fix Faction play back to year 1-3. Plus, they could make Solaris into a E-Sport project. Posted Image

meh, i always thought the whole "E-Sports" thing was a bit stupid. trying to force MWO into that realm was a bad idea from the start. i play games to play games not watch others play the game (when i do watch other play MWO its not to watch some comp match but to see an interesting build idea or some commentary on mechanics or such). the comp crowd is a bit to toxic for my taste.

then again i was never into sports as a kid or even today, hell i don't even really follow any real world sports team.

Well to me ill put it this way E-Sports today in PC gaming is like the NBA or NFL but MWO would be like watching golf or tennis on tv if I had to watch MWO as this kind of E-Sports I would take my pistol and shoot myself in the head LOL.
