So this is a dumb thread, but I wanted to make it anyway just because this place could use some lighter fluff from time to time.

I've said a few times that I recently returned to the game because my friend just got into it and he was hoping we'd all come back and play together (and also he really wanted to get back in the cockpit of a Black Knight, his favorite MW4 'Mech). Plan has been mostly successful, and he's been doing surprisingly well in smaller, nimbler machines after picking up his Black Knight and paying the IS Tech Tax to get it up to speed.

Last night, he decided to drop a whole *** new game's worth of cash on MWO... for other people. He'd heard me say I used to be real big on Victors so he gifted me Li Dok To. He knows Maker is fanatical about Marauders so he gifted Maker Blight. He knows Rize is an Enjoyer of Fat, so he gifted Rize Aksum. And he knows Salt likes oddball, off-the-wall stuff, so he gifted Salt Onyx. This is his first major purchase in MWO, outside of a small handful of MC to obtain his signature paint colors in this game. No Legend for himself; he's planning on grabbing Red Reaper next month but until then he is now the only one among our circle with no Legend 'Mech.

How many people make their first purchase in a new game a bunch of presents for other people?

I'm actually willing to buy a IS/Clan Light/Medium/Heavy/Assault New Player Pack for avid new players from time to time...

The problem is, the new player themselves sometimes do not know what mech/playstyle do they themselves prefer...

(I was a returning player almost 4 years ago, faced the same issues... I thought I liked Medium mechs, then Heavy mechs, then I finally settled into Assault mechs...)

Yeah, Rain's legitimately been doing better in his Flea and his Firestarter than his Black Knight, which is incredibly bizarre to me. I don't think I've ever encountered a new player who naturally gravitated to - and performed well in - lights, heh.
