My guess is that PGI either gives those XL-engined IS OmniMechs massive armor and structure side torso bonuses to protect their engines or PGI makes their XL engines some special irremovable equipment with specific rules, so that those IS OmniMechs will no die due to side torso loss.

well, i hope so. I like the IS Omnimechs and i am waiting for them for years, but it was clear from the beginning that they have major drawbacks in their design because of the XL Engine. Otherwise you wont see much of them in the game like other not so good designs

after the buffs they've received, singles actually aren't too bad (and in some cases even outperform doubles). they're still generally worse than doubles, but they're not cripplingly awful like they once were.

I think it's a definite no on any weapon that will create stunlocks. So no tsemp either. Although I would love some clan heavy flamers....

Nice, wish I played at the start. But, I’ve read and watched lore about the IS onnimechs. Don’t they suck literally? Not as an insult. People constantly bad talk the clans mechs, tech and culture.
