Should I create a smurf account "Gastrit-boy"?

Nah, you've spoiled it now by telling everybody, can't really smurf if everybody knows.

yes but people ask question for a reason , and typically that's not to be told "Google it."

also if a question comes up alot a Faq would be nice.

if the answer to a question is "google it" I personally wonder if the person responding to me knows...(not that you are doing this.) emotion was spoken of before and passing on ones emotions to another for no reason is not very nice. I understand being aggrivated but well in the case of the internet you can take a step back and simply say "I Don't feel like answering that right now."

Yeah it is also "I don't have time or interest to start writing/explaining you stuff that you can google waaaaaaay faster than I can type".

If point of smurf account is just to bash lowtiers... what can they do to stop way better player doing that even if they know? Nothing.

No, the original point of smurf accounts was to avoid people recognizing good players and avoiding the fight.

you'd be surprized how many times I was told "Google it" by those people who were using a term or something like that.

If I want to know something, I will in fact google it. I always look for myself first. It's natural and correct to do so. To take agency and responsibility for yourself should be normal.
Taking offence at being expected to try to learn off your own back is the strange thing. Injecting feelings into it is sadly a sign of the times.

I find it funny that people are responding to the OP's complaint about seeing a lot of smurf accounts with "well, when I run my smurf accounts, they levelled out quickly", as if that disproves anything instead of being a confession of the problem.

Hi everybody, my name is Conky and I'm a Smurfer.

When I started playing the forums were full of threads about IS vs Clan tech and how one or the other was OP. I decided to test the theories and created two surf accounts, one for each tech base. After roughly 1000 drops in each, there both pretty equal when it comes to stats although I still prefer IS tech. I'm not a very good player so I don't think I proved anything either way. Posted Image
With the monthly free mechs there has been some cross-pollination across the tech bases but they stick mostly to their dedicated technology.

I've also started a number of smurfs where I only drop when there are events with low-hanging fruit (i.e. log in, play one match, get a mech) to collect mechs and other stuff and that I plan to hand over to new players I introduce to the game so they can have a head start. Except for one account, I only run trial mechs in those and they have fewer than 25 drops. I haven't persuaded anyone to try MWO yet but the accounts are still growing. Posted Image

I suppose one could start a surf account to take advantage of events requiring match score to earn something but then again, if you are a high-tier player you probably don't need any help with that. Another reason could be to see how far you can get running only trial mechs, they used to suck so it was a decent challenge but they are pretty good these days.

Good hunting,
CFC Conky

the problem is that there are so few players that everyone is getting lumped into the same match reguardless of tier.

I'd say that's close but not the real issue, which is that Tier/PSR 2.0 has run its course, and the matchmaker has no idea who's actually more skilled or not. (And then it's totally overwhelmed by top-percentile players in groups.)

We can probably help things even without dev-intensive secondary lobby balancing. A thought process:
  • Tier 5 doesn't really serve its intended purpose, nor does it need to if Tiers 4-2 are effective buffers
  • Strategize to shift 95% of players down one tier and make Tier 1 effectively for 301+ average MS players
  • Revise PSR to be much stingier than 2.0 below a performance threshold
  • Adjust tier point requirements to prevent "grinding"/"drifting" up to the wrong tier
  • Reseed accounts to 5, 4, 3 based on historic average MS
Thus, tiers will still mix but outside of ringer groups, the odds of better balanced players will be higher.

Okay then, didn't realize that in this day and age that asking questions is now frowned upon and we all must hail the almighty google. Perhaps I should ask google what the meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything is......oh wait, it's 42. Sorry my old brain forgot that.

Guess I should tell my two grown kids "Don't ask me any questions anymore, go search google and youtube how to do it, fix it, or explain it to you, leave me alone, and stay off of my lawn"

I'm sure my Division Commander in the USN would have told me to go google how to do a proper military pushup if asked, oh wait-you can't have any hand held idiot devices in bootcamp.

How about if I asked one of my teachers while growing up "I don't get this-can you explain it again" and getting told to go google it.

Doh! Google didn't exist back then, and a 32 bit modem dial up was a luxory, if anybody called your HOUSE you got disconnected. CELL phones were the size of a brick with an antenna.

Willing to bet you couldn't even figure out how to use a Dial Rotary phone if your life depended on it.
I'll also bet you can't even read a map for that fact either without needing google maps to get you from one end of your street to the other? Sound about right?

Seriously get over yourself....Moron!

Bet he couldn't even use a hand held calculator, or a VHS player.

I bet it's a waste of money and time to put a pilot through a simulator when he could just google how to fly an f-16?

On that note to people even have books anymore like physical things you use your eyes to read and physical pages you have to turn instead of using a screen and a mouse scroll wheel?

In world war one all the way up to th Korean war a significant amount of recruits were illiterate, I'm sure telling them "Google it" would have really gave them all the tools they needed.

Hey sarge, How do i clean my rifle?
Sarge: Google it!
Hey Sarge how do i reload my mag?
Sarge:Google it!
Uhh commander How do i start the engine on this m4?
Tank Commander:Google it.

You forgot to mention internet censorship which could also prevent someone from being able to 'google it'

Also back then we didn't have wi-fi so if you didn't have a plug to connect to the wall to your modem your SOL for internet....

It's sad how we've become so dependant on technology instead of teaching each other how things work...

Maybe that's why it's soo easy to change the definition of words these days as no one is willing to teach what that word actually means and instead let google or in the case of some crazy person a random company telll you the definition of 'minimium range' Nobody ever questions "The internet" the internet could tell you gravity doesn't exist on July 5th, and some people would believe it.

People ask questions to be answered by someone wiser than them or someone who has more knowledge than them, telling them to 'look it up' or google it, to me either says 1. you have no idea what your doing 2.your too lazy to be doing what your doing 3. your just a jerk who doesn't want anyone else to work with you

Just imagine if the new player help section was all "Google it"."Google it". "Google it". "Google it". "Google it". "Google it". "Google it". "Google it". "Google it".

Meep meep has like 30 alt accounts at this point cuz he enjoys farming T5/4s. Ofc he'll answer like this to the OP.

Busted, lol!

And I thought I had issues with too many alts...

I tip my hat to you, Sir Meep Meep.

In my own defense, depending on how long I've played them, my alts are all between T4 and T2.

I play to have fun, and winning is fun, while I do occasionally test out weird builds to try and find unique ways of killing, the closest I ever came to purposefully playing bad by using an under-performing mech (Cap Spider with a LPL) it turned out to be very effective build Posted Image

I mean its not like I ever tried to hide them. I made them their own twitch channels but would use the exact same format as meep meep to see how quickly they caught on. Welp it took months and months and only after I literally had to make a parody alt named mr s a t a n and act like the sweaty arrogant **** sure players just to get them to notice. THEN it blew up and I haven't laughed so hard in ages.

It's been a gigantic source of entertainment and most importantly salt. Oh the salt. Posted Image

You're comparing training in the military with playing a video game.

If, after boot camp, advanced training and the fact you've been selected for combat, you asked those basic questions of your sargeant, you'd get your arse kicked, and probably rightly so.

Before 'just google it' became a thing, we had to use libraries. There wasn't a forum to ask or a wiki to consult or an engine to find stuff. You asked parents or teachers or friends... or looked it up in a book, newspaper or science paper. Maybe you looked through microfiche if it was particularly old.

Technology isn't a bad thing, how it's used is. It can promote laziness. "Just google it" generally means "the answer is out there and you'd have found it if you'd just searched for the it". Yeah, sometimes it's not, and the easy counter is to say exactly that.

You may say, "Just answer the question bruh", and others are saying "Be self sufficient."

Plus the fact that they already know the answer but just want you to waste time explaining it in detail so they can argue some more. Ah the forums.

Yeah, some people abuse it. But anonymity is important.

And while it's not punching people through the internet, there are a few countries in the world who disappear people who make comments on the internet that they don't like. One country is worse. They simply make it so you can't buy groceries or rent/own a home. It's a first world problem where the worst you're worried about is a troll.

the problem isnt smurff acounts, the problem is that there are so few players that everyone is getting lumped into the same match reguardless of tier. especially common if playing off peak. somewhere someone will say "upper tiers cant drop with lower tiers", but that's naive. there are releif valves that open up so you dont spend north of 10 minutes looking for a match. you also got groups that are not constrained by tier (eg t1 mechdads dropping with their t5 children).

a t1 smurff will last all but 2 drops in lower tiers before they bubble up and there are not enough new player accounts on jarls global stats to account for that. because presumably you need a new smurff account every time your old one bubbles up, and you might end up with 10 or so accounts a day being created. it may happen in a limited basis (eg the what mech challenge awhile back). but not enough to significantly impact the game.

a player with high skills tends not to stay in lower tiers for long. unless they intentionally play bad.
