this is probably going to sound stupid but the idea is bugging me.

Are battles such as Twycross only going to include people from certain factions? Or maybe certain units in said faction?

since all ranked fights are going to affect the inner sphere according to the devs, would certain historic fights be limited to the factions that were involved? or will everyone be able to participate. another example. FWL members and cappies would never really fight the clans. they would be limited to each other and davion/steiner. and maybe occasionally a combine raiding party. but really can not see them ever tangling with rasalhague or the clans.

what do you guys think is going to happen?

also on the side not. do you guys think that factions will only fight realistic enemies? aka no cappellans vs the clans when they show up.

Right now it sounds like there are not plans for player-based historic fights. These events will have a fixed/necessary outcome and therefore will be treated differently than the kind of border skirmishes we'll be engaged in. This is my understanding anyway. I still maintain that for this kind of game, the 3025 era was a much better setting.

I really like the idea of Historic battles, but like Hayden said, can't see it happening in this kind of game, unless they go through and make some single player content, unfortunantly.

they did say they were looking for creative ways for players to participate in the said historic battles.

I think it'll be done in a way that you can participate in a battle, but even despite the outcome of that battle, the historic fight wills till have the same outcome.

So you could fight on Tukayyid and lose against a Clanner force, but that wouldn't change the outcome. However, there could be great rewards for winning a battle.

I figure they'll have story line events, just from the fact they're making certain faction units "off limits", probaby for story telling purposes.

I think Orzorn has the right of it.

E.G. the clans swoop in and attack a number of planets you could fight as a defender, maybe win a clan mech or at least some salvage if you and your "team" win your battle. But the planet still falls and history still rumbles on unperturbed.

Alternatively you could be fighting a rear guard action to get some royals or someone who has paid for your Mercenary band's protection off planet. Sort of an ever increasing wave of increasingly heavier and more varied clan mechs with the final wave being virtually unstoppable and you are forced to leg it, possibly even before your charges have made it (for less creds obviously)

My personal favourite would be to fight on a planet with a never ending flow of clan coming in against your squad, no way out, no chance of victory, just waves coming in to see how long you can hold, there would have to be massive honour rating or other kudos for your guild/band whatever for taking that on though.

I had actually asked this question in the Community Warfare Q&A, here's what they had to say about it:

Are you guys going to have special event matches for historically-important worlds that are more formalized, one-off, wave-style matches? –GaussDragon

[BRYAN] The problem with historic battles is they have predictable and necessary outcomes. We are looking at creative ways to involve the community in these key events.

I would like if there was recreation days where a planned battle was going to take place and you have to sign up.
Just for fun to see if it would go any different.
There is reference to this happening in the novels via sim pods.
Its all about the bragging rights!

I actually think a great way to handle this would be as a "simulated" historical exercise. I remember in one of the novels you had Jaime Wolf and Grayson Carlyse fighting the Battle of Gettysburg using authentic terrain and force numbers, but as force commanders with simulated Mechs rather than with infantry or cavalry. In the story I believe the battle was interrupted by an assassination attempt or something but it was a great concept.

You could have a certain Academy or University or even historical societies advertise they want to recreate famous battle from history, even ones from the pre-mech age, but using mechs. Anyone could be invited to participate regardless of faction. While it might take a while for some of the more recent battles in the timeline to come up as scenarios I think this would still be an innovative way to allow players to fight their favorite historical battle without interfering with the timeline.

I for one would love to fight the seige of Troy in Mechs, or Thermopylae(Hehe would the Spartans have to pilot all Spartan Mechs?)

Maybe the Training/Introduction to the game would be like that as it *seems* to throw you right into a very important historical battle, but right after you shoot down the head enemy mech (with lots of fire support, cause your a noobie.) Then all the sudden the cockpit goes black and some old gruff military scholar is helping you get out of the cockpit congratulating you on passing your final test!

A thought anyway.
