I would rather to see the decreased voting power of popular maps:

More popularity = Less voting power (lesser percentage).

This could give less popular maps the chance to be played.

I have much different reasons for wanting this "feature" gone.
  • Map Diversity or lack there of. Everyone votes for the same maps over and over and there are tons of maps that never see the light of day anymore. Seriously we used to all complain about the lack of maps. Now there are a ton but we are back to the same lack of maps because of the voting. It is just dumb.
  • Wasted time. Seriously, it already takes too long to get a match and map voting adds at least a couple minutes to the process.

Maps are less popular for a reason, it's typically because they are bad maps.

That said, per PGI Frostbyte:

One last October patch leak.

All map weights are equalized. This means that each map now has the same chance to show up in the voting pool. After a period, we will analyze player voting data of which maps they want to play on to set new map weights.

Number 2 is the big reason to remove this. There are too many loading screens it takes way to long to get into a game that lasts 5ish minutes.

I'd like to see games last longer, more 10-12 games and less 2-12 games, and load times be shorter.

Just randomize the map and mode selection and maybe speed up the rest of the loading screens while we're at it. Speed up the drop animation too.

I would like to play on a map I know, meaning knowing the conditions before entering the map would allow for selecting the appropriate mech. For instance, entering a night map with hot lava in a black ballistic mech would be cool. On a cold snowy map, I'd prefer entering with white hot lasers. This is something I said a long, long time ago, something I wanted a long, long time ago. But I have no hope that it will ever come true. I don't think there's an administration team that would care enough to change the menu interface. Their aim is simply to maintain the existing game, nothing more. Just simple, small changes like upgrading one weapon and downgrading another. I wish they would also limit the number of light mechs in a match. Entering a match with 10 light mechs is really frustrating. I find it hard to keep track of them.

Does the fact that the company's name is Pirhana Games mean their game needs to feel like a piranha hunt?

Letting players choose mechs AFTER the map / mode is known would drastically favor experienced players and hurt the new player experience even more. If you're mad you get farmed now, it'd be 10x worse with this.

New players don't have 5 copies of every mech with camo patterns and colors customized for each map.

Experienced players have hundreds or thousands of mechs. If they could choose their mech after the map was known those snipers everyone gets mad at would be properly camouflaged for each map. The lights would be even more invisible.

Furthermore, experienced players would be able to pick mechs that exploit specific terrain pieces and ranges effectively.

As much as I hit getting solaris city when I'm in a sniper I don't want this change as it'd hurt the game.

Customizing mech camos for each map is incredibly tryhard. I just paint my mechs pink or, if it's genuinely a machine where I care about being especially sneaky, dark purple.

Fought against it being added to begin with long ago, but it was added and has always sucked and always will.

You're not wrong but there are people that camo their mechs. A lot of folks run some version of grey/black since it's a good general purpose color for a lot of maps in this game. If you could choose mechs for each map you'd have folks with a white, black, green, and grey version of their favorite mechs.

I'm gonna be honest, this feels like such an extreme case that's really not worth bothering with. Even in Div A of comp, almost no one does this, what makes you think they will in QP?

Most of my mechs are red and gray, which was the color scheme of my long-ago merc unit on tabletop.

I just hate guys, who vote for something like Alpine Peaks only to get terrible match then. But yeah, they get their "map diversity". It's so important. Ruined matches and wasted time don't matter at all, yeah.

Again. Map voting - is result of very long story. Devs didn't understand, that their game had certain game mechanics, like cover for example, and designed maps around providing diverse environments. May be it would work in single-player game. But we unfortunately have online one. Another round of map redesigns was about making maps, that catered to Lights. I.e. big open maps. But at the end they realized, that they simply ruined many maps and just wasted their development resources. Half of maps, like new Forest Colonly, new River City, new Frozen City, etc. should be redesigned again. But they just don't want to spend resources. That's why we have map voting.

And again. Voting - is "soft" solution of "specialized" map problem. Because hard would be - to allow players to pick specific mechs for specific maps. Some map+mode combinations are ok, some aren't. For example Domination is ok in combination with big maps, while Skirmish isn't. Maps like new Frozen City are simply unplayable, if you don't have long range weapons. Not just 450m, that is average range. But VERY LONG RANGE. So, you either allow players to pick mech, that has ones. Or you allow players to vote for maps. Devs have chosen second variant.

We had map voting even while they were designing new maps. Map voting is common across a lot of games these days, but like you mention it would be less of a problem is many maps weren't garbage which has been an issue since the beginning. Even with map voting, mech selection after the map is chosen should be a thing but we are where we are. This stuff isn't going to change so all we can hope for is the next MW multiplayer allows for all of this.

Yeah. Other players should understand logic behind map voting. Instead of just removing bad maps from game, devs allow players to eventually play them, if: 1) Majority of players agrees to do it 2) Map-mode combination is more or less bearable 3) Player wants it so much, that he has stacked big enough vote multiplier. That's it. That's how democracy works. 23 players shouldn't suffer due to 1 player wanting to play some exotic map, like Alpine Peaks. Just deal with it.

Please understand one simple thing. Getting map you like - is one thing. Making other players like it - is completely different one. Why can't you understand, that you'd get bad match anyway? What's the point? Just to waste your and other players' time?

It's very easy to make good maps. Map shouldn't: 1) TL;DR Be imbalanced - i.e. cater to certain playstyle 2) Be too big 3) Be too open 4) Provide too many attack lines 5) Have unreachable places.

That's why Canyon Network is still the best map ever made.

I mean I don't think this as easy as you seem to make it out to be, because there's also some things missing (like not having enough attack lines, being to claustrophobic, having smoother terrain, etc).

Canyon is good, but it's far from perfect and the changes they made to actually made it worse of a map without fixing the actual issues of it (west side of the map needs a complete rework, no different than it's spiritual successor Ceres). I'd even put mining above it.

I'd go further, and remove game mode voting, as well as the ready screen if possible. It takes too long to get into a match.

Most folks like having choices, and the ability to avoid crappy maps, just sayin.
