I'd like to see the ability -- on launch -- for creating private unranked games that you can invite your friends to, where you can get some practice or just mess around, and where repairs and ammo are free (call it a "Combat Simulation" if you will). It could also be used for those creative members of the community for making videos and the like.
Pretty please!

As nice as it would be, I doubt it will kick in on launch day. I can't imagine them not wanting to do it but I'd rather they get the online sorted and streamlined before they start going private. Lobbying up with friends to head into battle together would probably be available on launch I'd imagine, encouraging community factions as they are would be rather pointless if they don't.
Video capturing would be nice, unfortunately again unlikely to happen simply due to time and staffing constraints.

Having unranked games would be great for testing new loadouts. Nothing worse then getting into a firefight and having your mech become a crispy critter because you need more heat sink and less energy weapon. Unranked would also be nice for testing team work and lance/star functionality... hmm we need more intel ...doh our scouts are stll in low orbit above the battlefield because they zigged when they should have zagged.

All matches are going to be ranked on launch?

Well, whatever "ranked" means, by the sound of what we got so far every match should have some influence on the strategic/meta level. Nobody knows if there will be anything even close to classic "rankings" with tables and all the stuff. Probably not really worth bothering with that early on.
Also we don't know which, if any stats (ranks, blabla, whatever) would be accessible at all. Recalling the discussion on the forums about ELO and related issues, there was actually a suggestion made to disable individually the showing of your stats. Accordingly you won't show up in whatever "ranking table" there might eventually exist. No feedback yet to my knowledge from PGI about the stats issue tho.
I'd expect that to be more of a concern once a "Solaris mode" or something similar will be realeased. There it would actually be the daily bread to accumulate those stats. For the strategic level though, noone in his right mind cares a whit about e.g. how many shots of pilot X hit pilot Y. Results, aka won battles will count there. And individually what profit/gains you made at the end of the day. Thus the whole "ranked battles" issue isn't probably one for the most part.
Unless we get that "Solaris mode" (just using it as a convenient label) at release already, which I frankly don't expect. I'd actually expect some sort of "training mode" to have a higher priority for PGI, as that could have the nice effect of being a vehicle to cater to the people who want just to take a first preliminary "sniff" of the game. But of course the word on that has to come from them, not me.

A lot of people have said that we need a "training mode" available from the start. Don't forget we will have a lot of people new to MW and they will need somewhere to learn so that they don't get killed in the first few minutes while trying to work out what does what. Plus units will want somewhere to practice team tactics using in game mechs and weapons.

Rumor has it anyways.

Trial by fire is NOT a welcomed way to learn a game. Don't get me wrong, if that's all they have, then expect some third degree burns, but it would be nice to have a training ground initially.

I, honestly, think there should be a way for members of a Merc Corp or some kind of House unit to join up together in a private training session - a place where just you and your coworkers can practice team-based tactics and learn the pros/cons of your Mechs and team's tactics without having to do so while under duress [read: under live fire].
It's not the easiest to form a Company with others and make it successful without ANY kind of teamwork training or experience prior to delving into the "real world" of battle. This game is supposed to flaunt team-interaction moreso than buoying the Lone Wolf, so a team training sim seems quite appropriate.

Agree. Training mode will make for more opportunities to organize training matches and try out different tactics without risking any RL cash or c-bills. Keeping my fingers crossed that they, at least, allow for faction free matches.
