this is why i decided not to become a game developer. there is just too much turnover and zero loyalty.

Not to mention a huge pay difference, I make twice what most probably make and I'm on the lower end of things. It's a rough industry for low levels despite the industry doing so well as a whole especially with studios all getting gobbled up by big houses. I suspect calls for unions will ramp up again soon.

i have given thought to doing an indie game though, using my own engine which is probibly hovering at 30% complete. im not much of a creative type and coming up with an art style and story would be the hardest parts for me. i considered using photogrammetry and using 90% real world objects. since im doing a space sim the thought has come to my mind to get a bag of potatoes and scan them for asteroids and see if anyone notices.

use pebbles/little rock things and just upscale. Although a potato field of doom in space sounds cool.

3D scanners are getting cheap, I was watching youtube videos, this one came highly recommended, only, $359.00

https://store.3dmake...7UaAro_EALw_wcB

The color version is $699.00

https://store.3dmake...iI2dhYC3UA9g869

I was doing research on 3-d printers when I found these.

you can do pretty good with just a camera, soft light, and a workstation gpu (you need fp64 for good results, they intentionally gimp this for gaming cards). scanners are a nice to have though.

Worried as in the game may disappear possibly.. Maybe...

PGI should be more worried that most of the Devs linked to MWO and these forums are gone and now customers will buy less as they are worried that the game may close and our money is wasted, at least from now on..

Personally i'm not playing at the moment and haven't for a while.. The news brought me back.

I would have bought MW5: Clans on day one if it had been released on GoG. I waited for MW5: Mercenaries to be released on GoG and despite the patching sucking and still having to redownload the full install every time, I still prefer to purchase from GoG.

Or, most likely- they lose the license, and it goes back to purgatory- I'm 69 years old, the waiting game doesn't work in my favor anymore. With all its warts, I still mostly enjoy the game after all these years. We shall see.

54 here and I will play this as long as it is running.

I think Russ has moved on from MWO a long time ago. The only reason it hasn't been shut down is that it makes just enough money to stay in the black. That is to say, I doubt he cares much about MWO purchases for the past few years. PGI saw diminishing returns starting many years ago, before MW5:Mercs.

Well, I hope MWO stays around for a while. It would be a real shame if it shut down with no replacement...I can't really think of any other games like it. The closest I can think of that comes to it in terms of the strong emphasis on positioning and overall tactics and strategy as opposed to just reflex shooting is maybe World of Warships, and that has nothing like the level of customization and versatility in function that mechs have in MWO.

at the current rate of player loss, you have about a year until the active player count is < 10k. at that point they are going to need to make some hard decisions to keep the lights on. taking down regional servers, removing fp and eq (qp only), reducing 12v12 down to 8v8, disable match making entirely. and they may not be able to afford to make those changes either.

wait times are already abysmal at off peak hours. that's why i quit playing fp. when i am playing the game i often leave because the wait times get too bad, not because i want to stop playing. the real threat is not that were going to be down to 10k players, thats still enough to fund and keep the game active. but people will be more reluctant to buy mech packs as matches get harder to find. if the wait to play ratio is worse than 1:1, then i can find better uses for my time and money. you might see them start selling priority queue access at some point, but i think id have already left the game by then.

Have to say I was honestly surprised that Russ didn't jump at the opportunity to ship out and leave Paul in charge. Last time I saw Russ on one of the NGNG podcasts he looked completely strung out and not up to the task of operating any business.

i think that's when he was talking about clans, and also where he mentioned the possibility of an mwo successor product after clans.

Hi guys,
I'm sorry for asking stupid question.
So, the slow downfall of MWO is because the limitation of CryEngine, right? Especially if it's compared with UnReal Engine.
My question is, if they can make MW5 based on UnReal engine with all its glory, why cannot they "modify/expand" MW5 to have PVP element like MWO? Maybe call the game MWO2

today 3 players - focusing me (don't care ) BUT after i reported one who deffinatly is cheater, PGI prefer , brock MY game by spectating me "from other side of moon " and rise my usual 50-60 ping to 700+ , after this I HAPPY ABOUT ALL THOSE "optimized" PGI workers , and hope they all will be kicked soon .Greedy company that **** MechWarrior franchise , hope you suffer.
PS want money - go ask those CW , FP , and all other "champs, vets , and prisewinners" , you overfeed many cheaters , who even don't try hide , and even more you protect them from usual players. All those aimboters , magik high speed ac , uc , rac , and funny gauss (what **** mechanic was added to "balance" op weapon , and now most cheater use macros to AVOID it).

i think its more that companies like to hoard resumes for when they plan on doing the next thing. especially game companies who hire and fire based on what their staff needs are at the time. this is why i decided not to become a game developer. there is just too much turnover and zero loyalty.

I went to school for Game development. That's what my major is.

I make more money, and work fewer hours working in IT support. Game development as a profession needs protections. It needs unions, and it needs a complete reimagining of what sustainable development actually looks like. I have no interest in ever making my way into that industry as long as it looks the way it does, and is run by the people who run it.

Its a 14 year old game from the freemium era with a difficult to near impossible to maintain and expand code base and at best niche appeal. PGI does not have alot of cash or resources on hand to spend on a game that may not ever make money back.

ive seen other devs do more with less. but the engine they are using is probibly a limitation, especially finding people who know this particular version of it. not to mention its a mutated fork of the engine and is not supported by anyone.

i figure an engine port would cost as much as a new product, and a new product is likely going to bring in more new players than an upgrade. with mw5 mercs/clans they have already re-rigged many of the assets for the new engine. so the mwo successor product will likely use the latest version of ue and re-use a lot of assets anyway.

that said its probibly just going to be a tech refresh. there have been significant advances in gpu and monitor tech in the last decade, and a game that uses some of those would be nice. but the game loop and mechanics will likely change very little, and will probibly stick to the same arena shooter format. which is not really a strong selling point in my opinion.

The simple math is that as long as this game is making money EG7 will keep it around. As soon as its not making money then lights out. So if the community as a whole wants the ole girl to keep chugging along then get active and try to recruit new players into the game. Its really at its best point as far as the new player experience is concerned especially with the trial mech redo. Maybe lobby to have a buddy program with some generic new player friendly rewards like gsp so they can quickly get a few purchased mechs up to speed along with other normal event like goodies.
