I didn't see anyone asking the question I've got going on in my head, which is: How are skill points earned, rewarded,etc.

I show in my nodes active box: 0/91. Does that mean I have 91 available?
If so why can't I use them?

I'm just slightly confused on how skills work I guess.
Anybody wanna help a grateful newb out?

I don't know the best way to explain it to a new player but basically playing earns you mech and general xp that you have to convert into skill points.

You'll see how much you have when you select a few nodes and hit apply.

A warm welcome to MWO!

For each battle, you earn mainly XP (eXperience Points) exclusively for your own mech, and a very small amount of GXP (General_XP) that can be used towards any mech that you own. You use XP or GXP to convert it into SP (Skill Points) for the mech that you are currently handling (lower left corner box in your MechLab). It's 500 XP or 500 GXP, plus CBills, for each single SP.

Please do not use up MC to convert XP>>GXP, unless you really know what you are doing!
(Otherwise you'll very quickly end up MWO-poor in MC)

Each mech can have 91 Skill Points activated at the same time, giving it powerful boost and is quite noticeable.

Note that each individual mech can enjoy a double XP (and +GXP??) bonus each day, called "1st Victory of the Day". Active Premium Time would increase your XP/GXP gain by a further 50%!

As for the Skill Tree itself, here are some video primers for you!

There are good YouTube videos from MWO streamers who take the time to explain:

Baradul** (suggest 2018 to 2020 videos**)
TTB
JGx D A T A

Note: ** - Baradul used to explain in detail how your mech playstyle fits with your Skill Tree from 2018-2020. Recent 2021 and onwards Baradul videos use more cookie cutter Skill Trees with less explanation.

Personally I would always get these Skill Nodes for any mech:
~Full 10x nodes for Armor Hardening
~Full 10x nodes for Skeletal Density
~Full 5x nodes for Cool Run

For all other Skill Nodes, these are user's discretion (e.g., some get full Radar Deprivation, others get the full mobility tree, and still others get that powerful full Seismic Sensor tree).

Some Anchor Turn for your slower mechs would help, helps in defense vs Light mechs.
Some Torso Twist would help, enables you to use your mech's arms as shields for your mech body.

Range/Cooldown/Heat_Gen Skill Nodes are always great offensive skills that we all cannot get enough of!

Full set of skill nodes for Reinforced Casing, more survival. (More useful for brawlers)

2x skill nodes for Improved Gyros is almost always enough.

I'm trying to get the gist of all of it, so I can understand what I have to do to be able to use my skill points.
Here's what I'm seeing: Available XP types: 75 XP and 5,133 GDP..Available SP: 0;
Nodes active:0/91 and I can make out what the skill nodes unlocked stat is.
Now, having Ben a gamer for longer than most of you have been alive, I also know what XP is and what it normally represents. But GXP? The hell is it and why does the only conversion option I have seen, only offer to convert to it instead of SP. And that leaves me with this issue I'm trying to make sense.

Can anyone help me makes heads and tails of it?

I appreciate everyone's time in trying to help me on this. I realize you prolly have a handful of things you'd rather be doing. Thank you

0/91 Nodes
You can activate up to 91 Skill Nodes at a time!

SP=0
You do not have any Skill Points (SP) to purchase Skill Nodes.
1x SP can activate 1x Skill Node

XP=75
For each 1x Skill Point (SP), you will need XP=500 plus 25,000 CBills

GXP=5,123
For this GXP, you can convert this into 10x Skill Points (SP). Be careful to do this in the mech which you wish to level up the Skill Nodes with! My advice is to treat the GXP like gold; use it very sparingly.

========================
To Convert XP into SP (suppose that you have 500 XP on your mech now):
[MechLab]>>[Skills]>>[Add_SP]>>[Click_on_XP_icon]

==>This above action opens up a new XP>>SP dialogue box, where you can convert XP>>SP by each single SP point increment.

Hope this helps!

This was how I kick-started my MWO XP/GXP economy a few years ago:

1) Play with your favourite mech that you do well and win more often with.
Keep playing (grind) until you get at least GXP=7,500
~Try to play more often when you have your Premium Time active! It gives you 50% more XP for your current mech.

2) Jump into your new (unskilled) mech, convert that 7,500 GXP into 15 SP points for this new mech that you are now in.
Do not use the GXP on your current 'new' (unskilled) mech! (Pls see (3) below for explanation).
~Dump these 15 points into: 10x into Armor, and 5x into Cool Run. This would make it easier to skill-level up your mech!
~Keep playing your new semi-skilled mech to grind out more XP, suggest to use it to skill up the following:

2a) Grind for 10x Skeletal Density (better survival; new to game)
2b) Grind for 8x Reinforced Casing (better survival; new to game)
2c) Grind for 5x Velocity (only if your main weapons are ballistic/PPC/missile)
2d) Grind for 2x Magazine Capacity (only if your main weapons are ballistic; for missiles pls max out Missile Rack Skill Nodes)
2e) etc. etc.

3) Here's the trick:
Once your "new" mech is Skill Node maxed out, you should have accumulated enough 7,500 GXP (aka 15 Skill Points for your next new mech).
(This is assuming that you've accumulated GXP from your "new" mech, and did not use any of it yet).
~Repeat steps (1) & (2) for each new mech that you've purchased!

Good luck!
