Here is some evidence why I think the Mauler will be the next assault mech...
* 90 ton mech that fills the tonnage gap and has many ballistic hardpoints.
* Weapon loadout is dedicated to long range engagements.
* Has been featured in many previous Mechwarrior games.
* The Mauler exists in the BattleTech universe in 3049.
* Has been listed twice in ISN News Feed articles.

While I like the ISN bit, the rest is meaningless.
the 90 ton gap? So what, look at the Medium mech tree, it has 3 50 tonners, and no 45 and 55 tonners. Any 20 tonners show up in the lights yet?
Ballistic loadout? What does the majority of the Atlas and Stalkers load consist of? Yup, Ballistic.
Long Range? If you look at the maps, most of them are developed to limit engagement range, so I don't see that as a legit criteria.
Featured in many games? The Commando, Spider, Cicada and many others say that doesn't matter much.
Mind you, I would enjoy the Mauler, and certainly loce long range ballistics, but I don't buy it.
