As there will be many new players to the mechwarrior/battletech series, (including me) what type of mechs do you reccomend for them when they get invited into the closed beta and/or go in during open beta? The centruion mech was reccomended for players that can't decide in the trailer, but what do you think?

Catapult. You can play in relative safety and get familiar with the game.

The temptation will be to go for the assault mech. Let me offer a suggestion. An assault mech pilot will really appreciate a wing-man in a fast 40-55 ton mech to keep their 6 clear. So far I see more assault mechs die from an attack on their unprotected rear than from a frontal attack.

I agree. With only two types of weapon systems (to avoid confusion), decent speed and armour plus jump jets, the Cat has everything a new player needs to explore Mech combat.

Best all around IMO, is the Hunchback. You can make it a missile boat, laser boat, omni-boat, etc...

It's a great all around medium mech that can pack a PUNCH

I'd recommend watching the light, medium, heavy & assault breakdown videos (in the Media section). Even if you've never heard of Mechwarrior or Battletech, you'll see something in one of those 4 vids that makes you think "I want to try that". If you are still undecided, go with the Atlas. It has a smorgasbord of weapons, so you can get a feel for all of them. It's massively armoured, so you won't get killed quickly. And with such a range of hardpoints, it's surprisingly customisable as you get deeper into the game.

New players can only choose level 1 Mechs (1 Tonners) for every level you gain via quests and killing mobs you get an adittional ton. So you must be level 100 for piloting an Atlas.

Level 100 is the level cap but they announced that they will increase the cap via expansions

I would suggest the Dragon. It's very fast for a heavy, good balance of weapons and armor.

Most of the suggestions were medium and up, so I hope I could buy one early, or maybe not take that long to get one. does anyone know if a new player would have to start at light mech and work their way up to other classes, or could just buy a heavy mech? It would seem pretty counter-productive if the heavier mechs are easier to play, but new players had to grind with a fragile light mech to get one they were accually good at...

This is so ridiculously wrong. I think every single piece of information you put in that post is demonstrably wrong. First, there has never been a 1 ton mech. I believe the lightest are 20 tons. There are no quests and mobs. There are no pilot levels. Thus there is no level cap.

I don't know if you thought this was funny, but it's not cool to tell someone who is specifically asking for help as someone unfamiliar with the universe things that are this blatantly false. It only spreads confusion.

Watch the video on the Centurion. It is a great "starter" mech and has one of each weapon group to get you rocking and help you support your team however you need it. Not saying that other mechs aren't as good or even better, but this one is worth a look.

I would suggest an Atlus because they can take a beating while you learn how to play the game.

Problem if your an atlas is that people are more likely to rely on you, your an assualt, able to take and give a beating, and if you dont know what you are doing...well that seems like a bad idea imo. The catapult as suggested before might be a good beginner mech. Watch the videos that they have released as that is the closest you will get to gameplay with the NDA in effect, then pick out the on that you think suits you best.

Edit: Grammar

I gotta say that the Centurian seems like a great starting point for new players, just as PGI suggests. It has a well rounded weapon loadout with LRMs for long range AC10 for punch and 2 med lasers for close range. I also am hopeing to see a majority of medium mechs in games. Meds are great supporters and can wolf-pack, so in any match you should quickly be able to figure out which hat to put on.

My beef with starting in a catapult would be that you pretty much would just stay at range, and not really see what in-your-face combat is all about.

I'm still on the fence a bit my own self, the assault mechs with their armor is a draw, but my fav mech is already in the game as well. The hunchback. Very excited for founders hunchy.

You can learn in an Atlas but actually your longevity is less than it might seem because they're not invincible at all; head shots are relatively easy because of the layout and low mobility means getting flanked and shot in the back is likely too. I'd second the poster above and say try the Centurion but the Commando is also a good one because they're very nippy and weapon loadouts are very simple.

Alright I will agree with you guys, but I suggest an Atlus because of my inner House Stiener.
