Punching a small hole in someones windshield is much less damaging than blowing the cockpit to molten bits of slag. So no I did not.

If they can make sniper rifles that punch through tank armor in modern day times, they can make one that punchs through your mech's windshield in the future.

And fyi, there is no such thing as bullet 'proof' glass, just bullet resistant.

They can't, anti-tank rifles that could actually penetrate anything other than the lightest armor went out of fashion in the early years of WWII. Even in the 1930s such rifles were proven rather useless, which is why they were replaced with recoil-less rifles and other anti tank weapons such as the Bazooka/Panzerschreck/Panzarfaust/etc.

Anti-material rifles can penetrate some armor but certainly not the armor of any sort of modern tank. Some of these rifles are used as sniper rifles but there are no sniper rifles intended to combat tanks.

A mech's cockpit is made of 'transparesteel' IIRC, of several inches.
Antimaterial rifles like the Barrett can punch holes in the sides of LAVs like the Bradley, but wouldn't even scratch an M1 Abrams. The reason the Barrett can punch though a Light Armoured Vehicle is the armour on a LAV is designed to defeat small arms. So just about proof against the average .50 - the Barrett uses Armour Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot rounds of .50 calibre, at a very high velocity. So it'd hull a LAV.
Mech cockpits are designed to be proof against anything short of an AC20 - even an AC10 won't take out a cockpit outright. A sniper rifle going through it is therefore a little ridiculous - even the personal gauss rifles of the Jihad couldn't hull a mech cockpit (I believe)!

Still, nothing wrong with having an antimaterial rifle for knocking out infantry behind walls or similar to support the TBQ's Poor Bloody Infantry.
