Well, one easy way around this would be to have those spy drone UAVs or something similar that they had in the original trailer.
Would give you a limited view of the area above you but you could only select one view, the UAVs or your mechs cockpit.

Of course you'd need to equip the UAV and its launcher and sacrifice some space for it and it would have a limited life span.

or if there is a 3rd person view, and I said IF, then locking the view to the torso from behind with no zoom and very close by with only some up and down panning otherwise totally locked to the movements of the torso would be pretty much the only way to do it without giving too much of an advantage for those wanting to peep around the corner.

I personally find it refreshing that they are forcing the 1st person view from the cockpit and I can't wait to see it. I still remember those old Star Wars shooters. X-Wing and Tie Fighter and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter (if I recall the names correctly) and they had a very limited outside view, if any, although I did prefer to play from the cockpit in those. Ah the memories.

Personally I would not mind at all if the 3rd person view never made an appearance in other then as a module-type of UAV thingy at most.

I want to maintain 1st person for gameplay, but have a 3rd person vanity cam somehow, even if its an action cam or prematch only.

1st person view only rocks!

Makes sneaky kills possible. Even for an Atlas. ^^

As i suspected this thread was made by a newbie...sigh... i understand what you have said yadda yadda, but why make it easier?. just grab an old mech warrior game and practice in first person so you can get used to it..

The only thing I really like about the 3rd person view is the full appreation of the mechs. You get to see your mech battle other mechs and see the true mechanism of the fine machanics of the battle. Other than that, first person for battle, 3rd person for observer.

i hope they do not introduce 3rd person view....and if they do i hope that it is an option that lets you only play with and against players who also have that option activated..

I MEAN COME ON ...IF YA WANNA PLAY THIRD PERSON GO PLAY ON A CONSOLE or mmo-games:P

and for the people who only can play in third person......first you could also not walk....and then you suddenly could with a lot of practise...WELL START PRACTISING PLAYING IN FIRST PERSON!!!! :P

I like third person view in games like arcade flightgames for instance, or action heroes like Indiana Jones, Spiderman or Ironman. But as for a game like Mechwarrior, you're supposed to be limited to an inside view, you're inside of a walking machine, not floating above it. Mechwarrior games are serious simmulaton games, right up to as real as it gets to a real-life robot you're inside of........makes me think of the movie Robot Jox.

So when the Xbox game Mech Assault came out , I really missed the inside view, well it looked kind of crappy anyway compared to Mechwarrior 4 , so didn't play that game a lot.So in other words , it should be restricted to cockpit view, this is like Mechwarrior's trademark.

I vote for third person view only being an option when in spectator mode.

NO 3rd person view, ever! (Just my humble opinion, for what it's worth.) I just don't see how you could even suggest it's implementation... with a restriction that it wouldn't give any advantage for viewing? HOW? Seriously, in what way COULD it be implemented and NOT give an advantage. Make other mechs just disappear until you peak enough around the corner that 1st person view would see the target, then HOCUS POCUS, they appear?

Third person views are not proper for this game in my opinion. There are several ways to enhance one's situational awareness in place. The tactical map will give lots of info. Commanders have the option to seek satillite data. Your lance mates, especially your scouts will be feeding you data. Your commanders, both lance and company, will relay info to you. Managing data and being situationally aware are skills that can be learned with effort. Third person views as a default view destroy that part of the gme.

Ok, I'm writing in hopes to try and get people on the same page. (1)I do not agree with nor disagree with third person views. However, I think that MechWarrior needs to reach out to the MW community as a whole. Yes forced cockpit view stays true to the sim, and eliminates other multiplayer playability issues. (2)But at the same time there must be a way to bring a third person perspective for those who are more comfortable playing the game that way.(3)Maybe creating a system that keeps track of your mechs blind spots so to speak, so we wouldnt have problems with cheap tricks such as seeing/detecting people over walls and around corners without having line of sight or a scout to spot. I'm not complaining, I just want to see the community as a whole happy and supporting MWO!

Hey OP i see what you did there in #1 with agreeing nor disagreeing, but then you contradicted yourself in #2 and #3. You didn't play that well, and the devs and PGI have made it very clear in responses to threads such as this, there will not be a third person view. Read these threads about 3rd person view, and have a fine MWO day sirs.

The second there is 3rd person then old problems like pop-tarting appear again, it's for the best that the viewpoint is forced.

You talk about viewing across a hill and technically not having cleared it? Well, yes, thats true. However, i have been around MW4:M for a very long time as well and i am pretty sure the gain in situational awareness is worth something, too. I always despised playing jumpsniper configs, but i never felt they had a major advantage through this. And the last faint of imbalance faded with the introduction of the fog grenade launcher by the Mektek expansion. I personally prefer 3rd person, because quite frankly... i like looking at my mech. That being said i played enough on Sunder (forced first person, puretech) to fight pretty confident in both options. That being said i just like 3rd person better...

I have a great idea, thats if it hasnt been thought of yet. But implement a 3rd persion view, JUST like all the other MW games had. But make it a match making option. Meaning. If you want to play in match's with 3rd person view. Make sure its not turned off in your options or wherever it would be placed. Or if we are ever able to create match's. Have it an option. That way those that like to watch their powerhouse's from 3rd persion view still get that, and those who want straight cockpit view. Still get that too. Its win/win =)

Third-Person POV is a "no" (for the foreseeable future):

Quote

MechWarrior Online is being designed to put you the player in the seat of the pilot. It is 100% first person view only. Being the pilot is one of our key design pillars and 3rd person breaks that pillar on multiple levels as seen in many of the other 3rd Person discussions.

We will investigate 3rd person in the far off distance for special game settings, but this is very far off in the distance.

While we appreciate those who enjoy 3rd person, MWO will be 1st person out of the gate and in the near future.

Private Matches are also a "no" (for the foreseeable future):

[15:20] <Rhiawhyn_Zerinth> Paul, I have an interesting question. Will it be possible to have custom private games (of which likely wont give monitary rewards) for practice and similer?

The moment you can go into 3rd person view is the moment this game stops being the most amazing Mech Fighter simulator on the market and just becomes another meaningless world of tanks.

Please please please, never do this I love this game too much

Well, they put a lot of effort into the immersion of those cockpits and it doesn't look like anything like it will be implemented soon. Its a matter of preference really. I could live without it, certainly. Still it could be an option, as in "optional". Like forced first person and 3rd person servers. That way everybody would be happy. Pretty simple. MW2 hadn't any functional 3rd person view (you could view 3rd person but not really fight in it). MW2 was the game wich i fell in love with. Its not neccesary, albeit there certainly are people wich prefer 3rd person (and also those who loathe it). Certainly light mechs gain a lot by forced first person, albeit it can be difficult in city environments when you run at high speed. Well, time to develope some skill, i guess.

The game is not about hiding or stealth its VERY easy to spot Mechs on the field. I personally would use both views, depending on what I feel like. I WANT TO SEE MY MECH I SPENT MONEY ON IN BATTLE, not some generic same looking ****-pit. It makes you feel more unique, and just feels right.

Ive had a dozen friends who used to only play mech Assault if you can use a third person cam. You seriously will get more players and money if you add it!
