In MW2, MW3 and MW4 all mechs had essentially the same radar range. (BAP excepted in MW4)
In Mechcommander, scout mechs had the option of carrying advance radar giving them longer range for scouting.
I think MWO should follow the Mechcommander model and give scout mechs advance radar giving the longer range and the remaining mechs smaller range.
My idea is that light (scout) mechs have radar range of 1000m to 1200m; Other mechs have a radar range of 500 or 600m.
Yes the range of radar detection is less than the range of the LRM range.
Thus a Catapult that is limited to 500 m range will need help from scout mechs to "spot" or "paint" enemy targets to most effectively use LRM at range.
Possible alternatives, radar range can be up to LRM range but you can only "see" up to 500 / 600 m on the mech radar map. You can still fire LRMs at distant targets by locking on them "visually" but cannot see them on "radar".
Or we can have all mechs have the same radar but larger/heavier mechs have larger radar profile and can be detected at much closer range than the smaller lighter mechs.

Thats awsome up untill you get to where Dev's stated LOSD.. If no one has a spot on a mech, and its inside your 500 meter range.. you are not going to be able to see him on your radar.. same goes for a light mech, it could have super far bap enhanced radar range, but if you dont see a mech, you cant spot/relay its location.
Not a bad idea but its a little bit out of place with the LOSD the Dev's are implimenting.
Check out the interview they posted up today, there is a good LOSD question in there that really helps explain what the Devs are doing with it.
