Hopefully someone might be able to help.

Does anyone know about the availability of Comstar as an official in game faction? Someone has created a merc group for them, but they aren't exactly mercs. The game's political mechanics may need some tweaking if Comstar were included. They were my preferred faction, but without the ability to choose them, I am on my favorite of the great houses, Kurita. I'm sure in the future players will be able to change houses when they want to try the game from a different perspective. At the very least they may have alternate soldiers to play as.

Also, has anyone heard if the actual game map will be represented in 2d or 3d. Would a 3d map be preferred where you can see the actual positions of the planets and systems, or would it be the classic circular 2d map from the old Battletech with Terra in the middle and the houses around the circle?

Will they have an active role within the game?

Unfortunate but it makes sense from a gameplay perspective.

As of right now, there is no information stating that Comstar will be a playable faction.

Are you thinking something like EVE's map? While this would be great I don't see it being a necessity in this type of game. I would imagine 2d map would be the way to go. Nobody really knows how the map/contract sysem is going to go but to keep server resources from being gobbled up rendering 3d movable mapping systems I would guess they would go with 2d? I may or may not live to regret that statement.

As far as ComStar goes I don't think they will be playable in-game, or at least not at the start (possible expansion?), and for the joke of it I think we can conclude that "ComStar" is the Dev team because of all the information they transmit to us.

All joking aside, there is nothing yet, as Mr. Grimm has pointed out, to say if ComStar is playable or not.

I wondered if the devs were going to use Comstar as an NPC type of force that could regulate faction imbalance or even as an ingame resource to 'lock' planets from conquest/capture to keep the game in line (loosely) with the known time line events.

Or even if they wanted to do some testing in game, so they have an immediately recognizable presence, nothing sells intrigue better than seeing some mech no one has yet tromping others in a match with Comstar insignias all over it.

I don't quite see how, maybe not Comstar, but at least ComGuards should be playable without upsetting the time/storyline.

... and plus it'd be really awesome to fight the Clans on Tukayyid...

I don't think anyone has ever done an Inner Sphere map in 3D so it might be quite an undertaking to try and create "z" coordinates for all the planets. I'd be just fine with 2D.

It's a bit funny we've always talked about the Inner Sphere as a 2D map.

Comstar has very little mechy influence aside from handing some mechs to various factions for a price until Tukayyid. Up to Tukayyid ComGuards were more or less untested.
