As I had promised in some other threads, here are the first moving images from my animated fan film "Red Bone Run", with a screenplay written by the great David Wainio.

Comments welcome!

Edit:

The film has been released: http://mwomercs.com/...-film-premiere/

Thanks to you both! Most of the film will be CGI with some 2D animation for the characters in their cockpits (that's why the CGI is also vaguely cartoonish). They are not finished yet, that's why they do not appear in the trailer. The film will be about 5 minutes long. That is one of the reasons the trailer is so short - a full 2 minute trailer for a 5 minute film seems excessive.

Well, if Dave is writing the story, it will have to be good.

BTW, if you don't know who Dave Wainio is, just read this: http://www.dropshipc...ders_3057_1.pdf
and the second part....all at http://www.Dropshipcommand.com

Dave is definitely a fan that can write!

Thanks to everyone, I hope I won't disappoint! I have only just gotten back into 3D and this project (although taking a lot longer than planned) is probably not gonna end up being 100% professional looking. But given the lack of fan made animation in the Battletech community I felt I had to do something! :P

I might still need some voice actors. If anyone here is interested and capable of recording their voice in a decent quality, please PM me.

I used Adobe After Effects for the title sequence, Blender for everything 3D, FL Studio for the music and Adobe Premiere for editing. I started with the "It is the 31st century"-part from the Mechwarrior 3 intro and then tried to sum up the basics of the Battletech universe in as few words as possible. :( There wasn't really any other inspiration for this, other than the Dark Knight and Inception trailers as far as the music goes.

Update time. I guess I might as well turn this thread into a little production blog although I wanna keep some of the mystery alive before I release the film.

For now I thought I'd show you what the 2D characters and cockpits will most likely look like. The following shot is work-in-progress however, and liable to change (just as the shots in the trailer by the way).

Thank you. I hope to start animating the 2D scenes soon (when I got voices for them). Most of the 3D animation is finished and only needs to be tweaked a bit and rendered out.

Thank you very much for your offer. The NGNG podcast staff has already volunteered to supply the voices which I am supposed to receive soon.

If a problem should arise with it (for example, if it turns out they are just too busy), I would be glad to return to your offer.

Another possible issue is music. I want to score it myself (like the trailer) but it is to be seen if I am up to the task. Multi-talented as I consider myself, there are just some areas that I can do better and some that I do worse in....

Uhm, thanks, I guess? If I wasn't so far along in the process I would definitely rethink the specific look I chose and I had to cut corners to get this movie done quicker but I was pretty sure I've been doing this long enough to not create "poor" results.

As for live action: The whole movie will be 2D and 3D animation. The CGI is not made to look realistic in any way (I'm using toon shaders and hard shadows). For a live action movie there would have to be a lot more details in the shots otherwise they would really look "very poor".

I could imagine doing live action Battletech but that would be a whole different kind of project.

Since the project is only progressing very slowly at the moment, I thought I would just share some more stuff. Inspired by the Animated GIF Mech thread, I decided to turn my models into GIFs for your viewing pleasure.
