I had Compaq 3ghz with all sorts of goodies before but the motherboard cracked and it won't stay for over 15min at a time now, it's essentially dead. So now I'm using an old 1.2 ghz PC from 1999 I had in a closet for work. The PC from 1999 obviously won't cut it and I can't just pull the money out of my wazoo to buy a new game machine for many months to come.

I think I'm going to crawl under a rock and pout. I guess I'll have to stick to playing on my Xbox for awhile, but I'll stick around the forums here still. I can still play the old Mechwarrior games at least, and discuss them here even if I can't play the latest installment to the series.

So....... Um, read any good books lately?

That's a total bummer! I kinda know how you feel, though (Same thing happened, no games coming out I wanted). Last year, my motherboard overheated in the summer heat (I was living in an attic, basically, with virtually no air flow... it cooked itself). It sucks pretty bad. Hopefully, you'll have something similar to what happened to me happen, and get a surprisingly expensive birthday gift from your roommate/friends/parents/Santa/who-ever-the-hell-else loves you... I owed soooooooooooooo many dish-washings after that though.

And yes, I just started a book called Eragon that I am enjoying. Not exactly giant stompy robots with lasers, but dragons and all that.

*edit for typos... probably still missed some, its 5:00 am here. I'm just too busy checking my sad yellow pending box to sleep)

You might want to hang out on facebook too. There are tons of performance computer goodies given away in contests just for signing up and "liking" a retailer's page on FB. Ninjalane is just one and my favorite, so find one you like or hit all you can find.

maybe someone can set ut up a live feed when the nda lifts. watch youtube videos etc.

Or maybe buy a founders pack so you can read and keep up with whats going on in the beta forums?

Basically play the game by proxy of somepne else. It will be like a movie for you.

When do you think youll get a new computer again? Its about 500 bucks for a really good new one now when you build it yourself.

I still have a AMD barton 2500+ overclocked to something like 4000+ speeds that works. Has been running at 93c on stock air cooling for over 10 years and it doesnt care. Rock solid. Heart touching. These days people get upset about running over 50c lol

Only usefull for browsing now though but the computer was and always will be a beast.

Talk about your nightmare scenario ;) you realise your going to get alot of replys saying "How sad I can play and here's my awesome amazing PC specs" just to rub salt in the wound ^_^

I hope you find the money to fix your box before too long, like it says in one of the posts above. . selling a non vital organ is viable. . maybe a bank job?

As far as book are concerned try reading a few of the Battletech novels :D

But seriously, I hope you get your PC fixed soon man, MW:O wants you to play it.

Buy a new or used motherboard? it doesn't need to be a Compaq one but any of the same form factor and that is compatible with your other hardware. Try Ebay.

But if you don't have a relatively good CPU and newish graphics card I wouldn't bother. There are numerous topics with budget configurations where you can get a good idea how much a new computer will cost you.

Im in the same boat as the OP, mobo died on my quad core PC, so currently using the wifes PC, which is just under the min specs on the dual core cpu (min cpu is an Athlon II x2 245, CPU on this rig is an Athlon II x2 240), so currently trying to source/scrouge/aquire (otherwise known as beg, borrow or steal......lol), a Socket 775 DDR2 mobo for my Quad.
Will find out if i can run the game once MWO goes open beta.
So i do feel for you OP.

Read anything by Mike Stackpole. www.stormwolf.com and on kindle - full novels for $5. He wrote the best Battletech & Starwars books, as well as many great books in his own universes.

I'm currently reading Endgame by Loren L. Coleman. But I wouldn't call it a 'good book'. It's likely the last BT novel I read. I'm going back to Baxter, Reynolds, and Bova.

I don't understand why you don't replace the motherboard if you know what the problem is. You should be able to find a repalcement for around 50 bucks or less.

It happended to me and that's what I did, I think it cost me 58 dollars.

I completely read this topic as "my PPC doesn't meet specs" and came in expecting something entirely different...

I posit that if you had never bought the X-Box and any peripherals and extra games for it you would easily be able to afford a machine to play this game. Live and learn right?

LOL. The day I started this Topic that exact thing happend to me. It wasn't on purpose, I met a guy at a picnic and we got to talking about PC gaming. But the thought of killer gaming PCs kept crossing my mind and bumming me out.

About replacemanent parts, the problem is that a motherboard crack is the only thing that matches the symptoms but I actually don't know what the real problem is. I Spent two weeks working on it myself and nothing changed so I mothballed it until I get a new PC or I can figure out what the real problem is. Sad thing, too, is I would have had to upgrade the hardware in it even if it did work. LOL, of course I could've managed that money but not the price of a whole new gaming machine, not without a loan or something and I already have enough of those to pay off over the next year or two.

When it comes to my Xbox I'm addicted, I can't break the habit. I've recently become a big fan of...(sigh)... HALO... I know, it's a horrible addiction for a PC gamer to get. All I have is the one game HALO REACH, since I don't have the free funds to get another game yet, or much else for that matter. It's Ramen noodles and Macaroni forme right now. But don't pity me, I'm doing alright, I have enough to live on and pay my bills fine, I just don't have any extra pocket money.

Plus, wat the heck, I can still play MW4 Mercs can't I?

Amigo, I can sympathise entirely with your situation and I ended up selling an unused guitar in order to fund a PC - partially to ensure it was above the recommended specs for MWO and partially because there were components in my old one that were 8 years old and it was simply dated.

I do wish you all the best of luck in getting your situation resolved and as far as literature is concerned I'm on hiatus from "serious" reading whilst I read BT .pdf's and TT RPG rules.

It doesn't have to be new. Perhaps you can find a good second hand deal somewhere with parts or a whole system. :(
