Is it as easy as choosing the Allegiance Icon that has the most interesting back story? Or should I have some affiliation with a larger body of players that are already members of the chosen house.

Or is it really as easy as being adopted into the house merely by alleging onself with the desired icon. Is there more that I should know?

As far as the personality of the Houses go, I really like the Draconis Combine and their fuedalistic styling. However the term Lone Wolf is cool too.

Opinions?

Battletech Wiki

We still have a long way to go before the icons on the forums means anything in the game, until then this is the best place for information.

As far as what waits for you in each house/merc/lone wolf, here are PGI's intentions

in the Inner Sphere, there are the 5 ruling houses, the Free Rasalhague Republic and a few other groups, mercenaries and the so called lone wolf types. each ruling house will likely have their own perks, based on what mechs are most common for their mechwarriors and such. they will also have battles and tasks which will be driven by their requirements and needs. this will also be true for the FRR. mercenaries will probably build their own units or join units, which will be allied with specific larger merc units, such as wolf's dragoons, the kell hounds, etc. a lone wolf will simply travel about and accept contracts wherever he can find them.

but, again, whatever affiliation you select will likely come with specific perks and negatives. what you may end up doing is finding a group you like to play along side and selecting their allegiance as your own. it really depends on you and who you choose to join with. keeping your options open, for now, probably isn't a bad plan, if you don't know the full back story, up to 3049.
