Thanks for the constructive criticism. It is in fact a catapult with the arm of a cataphract attached to it.

The Mad Cat itself is essentially a Marauder/Catapult FrankenMech.
Quote
In silent compliance, the computer materialized a holographic image of the Catapult/Marauder b*****d that had broken the Locust and destroyed Phelan Kell's Wolfhound. Even at only a meter in height, the machine's image retained all its menace. It feels so malevolent. A shiver ran down Myndo's spine and she fought to keep revulsion from her face.
The Precentor Martial, however, was not looking in her direction. He slowly circled the projection like a wolf stalking prey, his gaze flicking from point to point seeking out flaws in the design. When he found none, a smile crept onto his lips and he nodded with admiration and respect.
"Primus, I have taken to calling this model the Mad Cat. As with the Catapult 'Mech, the machine boasts two longrange missile pods, one on each side of the forward-thrust torso. It walks on bird's legs, which gives it a hopping-bobbing gait, though this pilot seems to have been able to conquer that tendency. Quite an achievement, with the low gravity on the asteroid. In addition to the standard Catapult features, two Marauder-typeweapons pods have been added. They have large lasers over medium lasers. Two more medium lasers, one on each side of the torso and two machine guns mounted in the center torso, round out the weapons selection. Yes, a most impressive machine."
As noted in Lethal Heritage by Michael Stackpole (with the relevant section viewable here), the Mad Cat is essentially a somewhat-heavyset Catapult with Marauder-style arms (specifically, it mirrors the Large-over-Medium laser setup used by the MAD-3M Marauder variant) bolted onto the sides
As noted in previous posts, the linked image uses (part of) the Cataphract's right arm (the "gun arm"), which is itself a Marauder's arm (as the Cataphract is itself essentially a Marauder/Shadow Hawk/Phoenix Hawk FrankenMech), as the arms and attaches them to the sides of a Catapult - so, it certainly fits the spirit of the Mad Cat, if not the actual description (as it's not actually showing the dual-lasers on the arms).

Modeling aside, since the MadCat/Timberwolf shares some of the design characteristic of the Catapult, maybe we should worry that PGI might spread some of their Catapult "love" on the Mad Cat. Making it's hud way too big and giving it a "glass nose" for all to shoot at. Hey, MW4 did it!.

To be fair, It's not "my" Mad Cat; I didn't do the artwork, and I only copied it from the post I was responding to for reference and illustrative purposes.
However, I expect that the main points of kvetching about the Mad Cat will (as noted in several threads on the subject) come from:
- having a large, Catapult-like canopy (and correspondingly-sized head hitbox) positioned front-and-center on the 'Mech,
- having the launchers count as parts of the side-torsi (which they should) such that blowing out both will kill the 'Mech (via destruction of three or more criticals of its XL Engine), and
- the arm weapons and torso-mounted direct-fire weapons being rather low-slung, meaning it has to expose a significant portion of itself (including the aforementioned canopy) in order to attack with its main weapons (much as, for example, the Cataphract does).

the name timberwolf is the name the clans gave it when they build it. the name madcat is from when inner sphere pilots first encountered the timberwolf. their targeting computer hadnt seen the mech before and thought it was a maraurder or a catapult so the pc couldnt choose and named it a mix of both names, MadCat. ive played mechassault a lot and in that game the madcat is the same mech but a different variant. like the timberwolf bieing the timberwolf prime and the madcat bieing the timberwolf A. (dunno which variants they precisely used in mechassault tho). so same mech but different weapon loadout in mechassault.

fair warning, you'll meet a lot of people who REALLY have the hate on for mech assault, so if you march around with your nose high talking about it you might be completely destroyed.

Especially if you come to me saying that the Mad Cat is better than the Timber Wolf
But hey, each series has one or more "hated" games, i may say AC:Brotherood and AC: Revelations (not for all the AC fans btw) or Ace Combat Assault Horizon (

One time I played that mission 4 times in a row because it wouldn't salvage.. Deff came in handy
i found it's a lot easier to salvage the mad cat if you only have one mech fight it at a time. What i did is I'd bring mechs with long range weapons, then blow up that bridge before he can come across, then have one mech fight him at long rage at a time. When my mech became damaged, i'd have him run away, and another come fight in his place.
