Hopefully this would be a useful thread. I read some people mentioning they built a cheap good system and listed the components or vendor they used.

Personally I'm interested in something cheap which plays the game at 30-40fps at like 1920x1080. Don't need 60-100fps.

If anyone has recommendations for vendors or system specs and even better...price! That would be great. I imagine I can't get anything for less than $550. Just have to convince the wife it's required for my well being. Second problem, my son is interested as well. 2 systems?

So far I've seen:
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16883229338

cyberpower, gamer xtreme 1000, from $615. i3-2120 3.3ghz. They have an unlocked i5-2500k one for $725.
gigabyte z68ap-d3, corsair 8gb, 1tb, geforce gt 520, liquid cooling.

magazine on the alienware x51 desktop doing 46fps with crysis 2 at 1920x1080. $1000 though. =(

cyberpower rig seem good? Anything cheaper?

Thanks!

You'd probably be better off putting a computer together yourself, rather than purchasing one. I would just try and purchase items as they go on sale, especially since the game comes out who knows when. Just make sure you take your time and research individual pieces before 100% committing on them.

You may very well be able to just upgrade whatever you're working with now, how old is your rig?

Those pre-built systems have really underpowered graphics cards for the money, which is going to be the biggest bottleneck in a graphics intensive game like this. Genghis is right that you'll get better results building your own.

The parts lists I currently have up on our site work great for Mechwarrior online, since The Falcon configures them for Crysis / Crysis 2 (same engine as MWO).

The $695 build with GTX 560Ti and i3-2120 is right around the sweet spot for performance / price.

We haven't officially released the site yet, so you might find broken things. :P

Thanks for the parts list, very helpful. Took a second to realize it was under "PC Buying Guide" since the link isn't direct.
Do you think there would be any optimization differences between Cryengine3 (MWO) vs. Crysis/Crysis2?

I think you might be better off in the hardware forums. ;)

Basically, for a smooth MWO experience you are looking for:

1.) a quadcore CPU
2.) 4 GB of memory
3.) a videocard around the $150 price point
4.) Windows 7

For details, check the hardware forum in the off topic section.

I had one of those, fried it in 2 months running my 2600k at 4-4.5ghz while under full load(crunching for WCG)

I wandered through sites configuring systems and they all came to like $850. I then realized if you've got some parts already it would cost less to upgrade an existing system. memory, cpu, motherboard, graphics. From the sounds of it, I agree with the $150 graphics card rather than the $500 ones.

Any decision factors for motherboards? Any down side to doing Windows 7 Media Center on game play? I assume it's windows 7 plus some additional hardware.

I didn't know there was a hardware forum, thanks for moving it.

Well, i recommend following my "builds of the week" guide for what to look at should you not be building your own, but keep in mind that if gaming is your primary concern, you should be looking at devoting 30-50% of the cost of the PC for your graphics. Especially if MWO is your concern, given the difference between a $100 AMD quad core and a $350 intel i7 in Crysis 2 (same game engine) is only 1 frame per second.
Also, don't cheap out on the PSU, keep in mind that it is what feeds power to your system.

Lastly, i recommend building your own as you'll get a far better deal.

How can you determine how much PSU you need?
I have an enermax 430w PSU that it would be nice to keep.
It was expensive. Green power dual fan PSU.
It seems like it should be powerful enough for a single chip quad core.

Thanks.

it is more then powerfull enough for the cpu specs your looking at, it will depend more upon your GPU then your CPU, you should be golden unless your going SLI or crossfire, it would not hurt to have a bit more juice, but your are above the minimum for a decent GPU.

I recently fried my graphics card and replaced it with a nice new nvidia. I play AoC as well and, my game ran like crap? Upon doing a little research I found the new card needed 32 amps whereas the old one needed 28 amp so, back to the computer store I went to upgrade my PSU. Now everything runs great! So, don't neglect the psu demands for the gpu or your cpu will run like fubar.

A nice template overall, but you could get a better result DIY. It has the typical overkill CPU for the GPU. If it's for pure gaming you could get a 4100, phenom II or i3 with a 6870 or 6950 on sale for the same overall price and come out ahead on performance.

Scratch that part, Diablotek PSU, avoid like the plague.

As a fellow poor person I recommend using craigslist to get good deals on used computer bits. There is a slight possibility of getting cheated but I find most people are trustworthy. Though you definitely need to do research or you'll end up like me with a GPU too big for your case.
