In the heat of battle this could be useful.

I agree with this suggestion 100%, seems like a standard feature like zoom.

The only problem I can see with it is that contacts, even radar, are based of line of sight.
having a rear view camera could break this, as any contacts you see on the camera would be, therefore, in your line of sight. which could well screw with balancing the likes of scout mechs and even mediums who might need the advantage of running behind you unseen to either spot you for the team or attack you. a camera would deny this advantage.
Amoungst all the other issues.

Ok...Well, that's all well and good, though a potential NDA break there...But how does the "radar being crap" answer my issues with a rear view camera? what you say could well be true, but it is what it is, and as it stands,a rear view camera would potentially mess it up/create confusion.
The problem is that it would create problems for scouts. If the radar works 360 deg and at range, then the usefullness of scouts spotting targets becomes less. the need for team mates watching your back would become less.
And just becasue it is different from previous MW games doesn't make it bad or wrong; the whole set up is largely different and requires different rules and different ideas.

In fact the Atlas K's center torso medium lasers are supposed to be rear firing. (think thats the one)
It is required as far as Im concerned. Real radar as well. Blocking radar is what the Guardian ECM is for.

Radar is supposed to be 360 degrees, BUT it can still be LoS (meaning the mech can have 360 view, blocked by hills etc). Per the lore, the HUD is supposed to be a 360 degree view crammed into a 160 degree arc around the pilot. We obviously cannot do this (at least not well), so a limited rear view is not game breaking (in fact, it can be quite frustrating )

As a rule, I would agree with you. RADAR could well be 360 (though not all RADAR is). Rear view cameras would probably exist. Though I will say again, just becasue it was in a previous game does not necessarily mean it's relevant to this iteration of the franchise. The path they have taken is very different to previous games.
But.
The game developers have made choices to balance the game, create challenges and encourage team play. These will sometimes differ from the TT and the other games.
And whilst you may not understand or agree with thier choices, they are the ones that have been made. As a consequence, these choices may well restrict other aspects like rear view cameras. Can you not see that baseing something primarily off LoS and then adding a rear veiw camera could create certain...contradictions? much like the rear facing weapons which I think they also nixed somewhere.
I for one, see what they are trying to do and agree with them. I am not so arrogant to assume I know better. I am smart enough, however, to look at what they are doing, understand, and give them the benefit of the doubt that they know what they are doing because they are professional game designers and I am but a humble model maker.

Because if I can go and buy a backup camera on amazon for $16.99 with Prime shipping for my car. Then I should have one in my 25-100 ton battlemech with lasers and particle projection cannons and fusion engine.

My guess is the only way this could be implemented is to do have a whole screen swap to rear view. It could look "videoish" like the FLIR and NV modes look, to let you know you're looking at a video feed.
