In MW3 I used a control scheme with a MS-Sidewinder joystick in the left hand and mouse in the right hand, which was pretty awesome.
The joystick had a coolie hat und 4 buttons at the top. My mouse also had 4 or even 5 buttons.
The 3 joystick axes controlled throttle(forward backward), leg turn(vertical z-axis) and torso twist(left-right). (I couldn't use the 4th axis (throttle) and the 4 buttons at the bottom without releasing the joystick though. So there were no time critical functions assigned to these. That's where pedals would be nice.
The mouse controlled the weapons groups, zoom and of course aiming.
This allowed me to steer my mech with analog input which was far better than keyboard.
keyboard is always somewhat digital (button is pressed or not, there is no half pressed w-button for half throttle).
Also I could utilize my FPS-aiming skills by using the mouse. If you aim via joystick you will never be as quick and precise. At least not me.
IIRC there was also an option to lock the reticule to the torso center in which case I could steer the torso with the mouse but only shoot directly to the center axis. But in general I used the 'unlocked' reticule to aim, then you could fully use the targeting range of your weapons which were of course the largest for the arms.
From what I can remember, the coolie hat allowed my to look left/right up/down (pilot look within cockpit) so for example I was able to twist my torso 90° right and look out of my right cockpit window and thus i could fire with my right arm weapons at 180° backward from my movement direction (at full speed), basically a parthian shot (only with C-ER-PPCs ;-)
Unfortunatly I wasn't able to reproduce this scheme in the later MW games, they just didn't allow it. All in all from what I can remember the Microsoft MW games where much more restrictive in terms of control customization. I was using standard WASD+mouse in these, but it wasn't half as enjoyable and "powerful"
I think, if they will support pedals (which I expect) I will get some, does anyone know if there is a pedal system which would allow to control 4 directions? Then one could steer the legs fully via pedals.
Also what about Track-IR or similar systems (I once saw a friend use this in a flight sim, which was awesome). Did the devs say anything to that? If we could use that stuff to control the mech pilot view, that would be megalomaniac!
Then MWO would become an almost full-body sport (sort of), since you not only use your arms and hands, but also your legs and your upper torso and neck ;-)

How do you pilot your mech?

Silly people. mechs are for kids with starcraft reflexes....
Since most joysticks are right-hand bias it can be a pain to learn my setup if you are not already left handed, but fear not, there are some joysticks you can use leftie, and that allows righties to use
Joystick and mouse.
Joy1: Jets
Joy2:select weapon group 1
Joy3:select weapon group 2
Joy4:Select weapon group 3
X/y/z axises: torso control
JoyHat: Vision
Mouse1: FIRE!
Mouse2:ALPHA STRIKE
Mouse3: instant reverse
Mouse Wheel: throttle
Mouse x/y: reticule movement, INDEPENDANT OF TORSO.
