Sarna has lots of info on the factions here:
http://www.sarna.net...Succession_Wars
Unfortunately I don't have a Cliff's Notes version, but you can peruse the background info there.
For reference:
- House Davion = Federated Suns
- House Kurita = Draconis Combine
- House Liao = Capellan Confederation
- House Marik = Free Worlds League
- House Steiner = Lyran Commonwealth

House Davion: The popular side, like the alliance in WoW or the 'good guys' in any other MMO they will have a huge population. Shown in most Battletech novels as the good guys almost all the time.
House Steiner: Like Davion, but these guys are rich and like to field heavier mechs. Many jokes about a Steiner heavy mech being a scout.
House Kurita: WW2 Japan in space and Davion is America.
House Liao: Space China, lots of crazy in the leadership, goonswarm is joining this faction.
House Marik: Lots of civil wars, rarely do anything on a large scale. As for as player population goes, this is the underdog.
FRR: Scandinavia in space, in the game's timeline they just broke off from Draconis Combine(Kurita) and will be the first to be conquered by the Clans when they show up early next year. Most FRR players today are planning on switching to Clans when they appear and believe that being the first to go down means they will be the first to switch.

House Davion is the Western European house, which more or less plays out as the good guys in canon. They are often considered one of the most powerful and aggressive forces. They use a constitutional monarchy,
House Steiner is Germanic in nature, and focuses on R&D. It tends to be more passive than Davion.
[House Kurita is the Shogun era Japanese House, probably the most aggressive house, which seeks to rule all of the inner sphere.
House Liao's bloodline is very inbred, and as such has led to many leaders with physiological issues. They are meritocratic house, where citizenship is not a right, but something to be earned.
House Marik rules over the FWL, which is made up of multiple planet-states, which each have unique ruling style. They tend to stay out of the spotlight as House Marik holds less power then the other houses.

I think you meant to say that many of House Liao's leaders have psychological issues.

Davion propaganda at its finest. There is no denying the crazy is strong in several Liao leaders, but there have been some just as bad leaders of other houses in the past. Liao just has a couple of the most recent examples (Maximilian, and the Clan invasion-era leader Romano). Of course the greatest leader in the history of House Liao is actually half-Davion...

Sort of right. House Marik actually ends up in a very strong position as the Clan Invasion proceeds, becoming an industrial powerhouse since none of its planets/factories are lost to the Clans. They end up providing mechs and arms to all the other major houses over the course of the invasion.

Personally, I was never much for linking myself to a house, hence why I'm sticking with a Merc company, I'll join any house that is getting the money flowing through it, if it starts going bad for them, I'll take my chances elsewhere. So personally, it's up to your preference sir, I personally believe the faster you adapt, the better you will do.

Just got to hope mix tech is allowed or that ATLAS may start getting outclassed during Clan invasion. But for now, I LOVE ATLAS

I wonder, will they (like the clans); Make a later appearance, perhaps have some form of faction availability or any active/in-active role at all (N.P.C. or otherwise) in the MWO future?
And if MWO is going to attempt to remain somewhat within the Battletech canon/media-timeline, will MWDA factions/politics be looming on the far-flung horizon?

Comstar and the Word will likely be a ways off yet. I consider it unlikely we will see Comstar joinable until almost the time of Tukayyid, and the Word doesn't even exist until after June of '52. Although, admittedly, I am very much looking forward to it, as the Word is my preferred faction (since long before the Jihad, all the way back to Double Blind).
MWDA factions are always a possibility, though if we stick to a 1:1 timescale, you are talking the RotS not being anything to worry about until almost 2042 real time. While I would love to say MWO will still be around then, there is a very good chance some of *us* won't be...

You make several excellent points, and sadly the RotS dateline is accurate as well, putting me at about 75 yrs old before I get to even HEAR about a paladin, let alone kill one
