For reference:
  • House Davion = Federated Suns
  • House Kurita = Draconis Combine
  • House Liao = Capellan Confederation
  • House Marik = Free Worlds League
  • House Steiner = Lyran Commonwealth

Also Davion and Steiner are currently allied in our time period, calling the combined factions "Federated Commonwealth". This alliance will last until eventually a civil war occurs. But that won't be until long after this game. This means that if Piranha sticks to lore, House Davion and Steiner won't be fighting each other in this game.

True, but they still have their own mech preference trends and idiosyncracies, since they are allied, not fully integrated.

I hate that Word of Blake. Probably the worse (most crazy/irrational) faction ever, as far as the canon goes, and that says a lot. Major reason the Free Worlds League gets wrecked much later on. Hate WMD, whether in fiction or real life.

I never did much like the Houses. I still don't understand how people see Davion as the good guys. :/ Boogles the mind, really, if you study their story.

Somebody said House Marik is the "underdog", but truth is that in this particular era they are pretty strong. The civil wars thing is overblown. They just don't invade left and right, as the "good Houses" do (which is why I don't understand people think of them as good.) Further, there's a lot of personal freedom in the Free Worlds League, and bigotry is much more rare. Those things, and not engaging at war at first opportunity, is what cause me to classify the FWL as the real "good guys", and my favorite House-they may be underdogs regarding how many people actually join them in-game, but in the canon, they are a very, very powerful force, ESPECIALLY as of now (3049.)

My reasons are mostly RP/flavor ones, as you can see, although if they implement technology accessibility (which probably the won't), House Marik gets lots of good stuff over time, a few years after tha Clan invasion, and before the other guys do.

I only like some of the 'Mechs Steiner and Davion have, but their politics turn me off-as I said, I dislike how people think of them as a "force for the greater good."

I like some of the cool Kurita tech and Mechs, but they are a bit extreme to me.

I love the Catapult, but can't relate to Liao authoritarian madness (no offense-it should be cool to play as part of that faction, but I just can't relate.)

I like the Free Rasalhague Republic-I would call them the real underdogs, and it's a pity they will be "consumed" later on.

I wouldn't mind being a mercenary (freedom is a good thing), but at the same time I hate the prospects of fulfilling a contract just for money, especially if I dislike my employer's historical actions or crazy values.

Therefore the reason I finally "aligned" with House Marik. Far from an underdog: great technology and commerce, personal freedom, and an endorser of culture and the fine arts. :)

I agree, House Davion IS portrayed as the good guys in the games but they are the aggressors and the story is quite a bit different in the actual canon, much as it is with the UK in real life too.

I have almost always favored Steiner, mostly because of the Gray Death Legion novels. I decided to switch over to the FRR because they are THE underdog. Not a fan of the Clans, kinda sucks they demolish FRR. Ah well, should be interesting when they arrive.

For the record, it has always bothered me that for some reason or another Steiner in particular is singled out as the bad guys in the Mechwarrior 4 games.

Probably because they fell out of grace with House Davion? I don't remember the MW4 storyline anymore.

Still, I don't see either of them as the "good guys" for reasons you know. I like some Steiner Mechs, and that's about it. They seem to LOVE invading the FWL, and will keep doing so in the future.

It's OK to like any faction you wish, though-it's your own universe to enjoy as you wish. :) Kudos for joining the FRR, which I agree are the true underdogs. I just love purple, and Marik's relative honor compared to the other Houses (as well as the reasons mentioned above.)

The major divisions of the Inner Sphere are defined by the five Successor States (feudal nation-states that once composed a UN-like body called the Star League), each ruled by one of the Great Houses. They are:

Federated Suns
Ruled by: House Davion
Government: Constitutional Aristocracy (Western European feudal stylings)
Dominant Language(s): English (official), French, German
Dominant Religion(s): Christianity (Interfaith Church), Buddhism, Judaism

Lyran Commonwealth
Ruled by: House Steiner
Government: Constitutional Monarchy (with German feudal stylings)
Dominant Language(s): English and German (official), Scottish Gaelic, Italian, French
Dominant Religion(s): Christian (Protestant), Judaism, Muslim

Draconis Combine
Ruled by: House Kurita
Government: Military Dictatorship (with Japanese feudal stylings)
Dominant Language(s): Japanese (official), Arabic, English
Dominant Religion(s): Shinto (official), Buddhism, Islam

Capellan Confederation
Ruled by: House Liao
Government: Dictatorship (with Chinese feudal stylings)
Dominant Language(s): Chinese (Mandarin, official), Chinese (Cantonese), Russian, English, Hindi
Dominant Religion(s): Buddhism, Taoism, Hindu

Free Worlds League
Ruled by: House Marik
Basis: multicultural, with strong European, American and Indian influences
Government: Representative Democracy (mixture of regional and federal authorities with great autonomy for its component regions)

At this point in the timeline (late 3040s), the Federated Suns and the Lyran Commonwealth are united (by the marriage of their respective rulers, Hanse Davion and Melissa Steiner) into one state called the Federated Commonwealth.

Other Inner Sphere powers include the Free Rasalhague Republic (between the Lyran side of the FedCom and the Combine), the St. Ives Compact (between the FedSuns side of the FedCom and the Confederation), ComStar (the organization that controls the interstellar comunications network and located on Terra/Earth, at the center of the Inner Sphere), and the Periphery Realms (located at the edges of the inner Sphere).

The Clans are the descendants of the self-exiled bulk (~80%) of the original Star League's military who left (with much of their advanced military equipment) for deep space following the collapse of the Star League government. There are a number of Clans, with each organized into a very rigid military caste system (the castes are Warrior, Technician, Scientist, Merchant, and Laborer; the outlaws/rebels/undesirables form an unofficial "Bandit Caste"), and having been lead by the Russian-descended general Alexandr Kerensky (named after a real-world historical figure) and his son Nicholas Kerensky (who actually founded the Clans as the society we know today), their speech is mostly English with a mixture of radio-shorthand-friendly terms ("aff" for "affirmative"/"yes", "neg" for "negative"/"no", and such), shortenings of common words/phrases ("ristar" for "rising star", "powless" for "powerless", and such; of interest is the fact that Clansmen generally frown on the use of contractions, despite the use of such shorthand) and the Kerenskys' native Russian (the name of the Clan capital world, Strana Mechty, is actually Russian for "Land of Dreams").

-----

So, the short version:
  • Federated Suns/House Davion: essentially the British Empire, with additional French overtones
  • Lyran Commonwealth/House Steiner: essentially the Holy Roman Empire, with heavy German overtones
  • Draconis Combine/House Kurita: essentially early Showa Era (roundabout WWI/WWII) Japan, with a smattering of other cultures (mainly Arabic) represented
  • Capellan Confederation/House Liao: essentially Qing Dynasty Era China, with a smattering of other cultures (mainly Russian and Scottish) represented
  • Free Worlds League/House Marik: essentially the Ottoman Empire, with some Indian and American overtones
  • Free Rasalhague Republic: essentially the Swedish Empire, with some American overtones

To expand on the second-to-last paragraph: I would say that the FRR represents Scandinavia and northern Europe, St. Ives represents either Taiwan or Hong Kong (depending on if one views the FedSuns with a more American slant, or a more British slant), the Periphery Realms collectively represent the "Developing World", and ComStar is essentially a combination of the Illuminati, the Vatican, and phone companies, and the postal services.

To expand on the last paragraph: I would say that the Clans collectively represent the "great conquering hordes" of the past (e.g. the Mongols under Genghis Khan, the Macedonians under Alexander III, the Romans during the expansion of the Roman Empire, and so on), while each Clan individually represents a separate society - the Ghost Bears are generally thought to be Scandinavian (like the FRR, with whom they later merged), the Smoke Jaguars are thought to represent (stereotypes of) the warrior tribes of Africa's past (most notably the Zulu Kingdom), the Nova Cats are thought to have been modeled on (stereotypes of) Native American societies, and so on.

Your thoughts?
