Then again, it's a tiny country with very little political or cultural influence. Why would all the Scandinavians start speaking modern Icelandic?

Eh, that as mostly for the viking comparison others were making. Also, just Icelandic for the battlecry. I never said for the Scandinavians to start speaking Icelandic ;)

However, I now feel compelled to share in no particular order the seven reasons why Iceland is an awesome country:

7: As previously mentioned, their language is nearly identical to Norse.

6: Iceland established it's first parliament, the Alþingi, in 930. Which makes it the oldest form of parliament still in existence.

5: It's a world leader in renewable energy. They derive approximately 80% of their power from geothermal and hydroelectric plants.

4: They have one of the highest literacy rates in the world, 99.9%.

3: Iceland is one of the safest countries in the world. It is a very common sight to see parents leave their babies in a stroller when they go into restaurants.

2: In 2008 when the world was going through an economic crisis Icelanders overthrew their government, elected new officials, and held the politicians and banks responsible for the problem. Today they have largely fixed their economic problems and recovering well. This was well before any of the other, similar, protests around the world.

1: And yeah, Iceland has had a good bit of cultural influence. Both the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda are Icelandic texts which contain much of what is known of Norse mythology. It's quite possible J.R.R. Tolkien was inspired by these texts as well.

I believe something along the lines of:
"Ride to meet your fate, Ragnarok Awaits" may be appropriate.

As Luke put it, pretty much anything from Amon Amarth, however I'm partial to the Sabaton version.

I'll add one more.
  • Mjölnir, a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu club in Reykjavik, has between 800 and 900 members. This is in a city with 120,000 citizens. So if it continues to grow, it will soon have 1% of the citizens practicing BJJ.
People in England and Scotland are advised to prepare for future viking raids by training armbar defense.

Okay, making a call to the linguists of the FRR. We need something suitably Viking, suitably surreal, and suitably brutal to universally shout when charging into battle.

Suggestions?

Well in a year it'll be "Aff, Star Colonel."

Heresy! That club should be offering Stav, a true Scandinavian martial art. Granted it's survived by a family who are selective in their apprenticeship.

Not sure how good the translation is (online translation site), but this sounds about right.

Du kan ha vår hovedstad! Bare ikke skade oss mer!
(You can have our capital! Just please don't hurt us any more!)

written icelandic and faroese are the two closest to old norse, as it would have been written, however.... icelandic and faoroese sound nothing alike, and it is likely that neither one would have sounded like old norse.

just a FYI

"[...] are the hunters. You are the predators. Taliban are the prey. To Valhalla!" "HOA!" "To Valhalla!" "HOA!" "To Valhalla!" "HOA!"

EDIT: For those curious, 4th mechanised company, Telemark battalion were the first to use that warcry among the Norwegian forces. Not sure if those guys are 4th, but I'd assume so.

Until something is universally agreed upon, I'm sticking with this one.
