Here's a guide to the Battletech universe:
http://bg.battletech...iverseGuide.pdf
This gives you a idea of what's going on and who's who.

From one relative newb to another, welcome!
While aware of BT for decades now tangentially via other pen and paper RPG interests, it wasn't until this game I really looked into it.
Here are some resources I found useful.
This "new to Battletech?" link is very informative, and the various free PDFs they offer will give you a solid foundation. What follows is a mostly a breakdown of those resources.
The Universe guide and fiction sampler and BattleTech Eras I found to be very useful for setting the tone, with 0 mechanics.
More free fiction can be found at Battlecorps
If, like me, you want more crunch and to see where the basis for some of the in-game mechanics come from read the board game's quick start rules and the RPG's quick start rules though I get the feeling the board game rules are used almost exclusively.
Then if you want to go nuts you can buy the various core rulebooks but for this game's purposes only the first two books are necessary.
As can no doubt tell, I found a great deal to enjoy in reading all of this, and I suspect you might as well, if you like what you've seen thus far.
Good luck, Mechwarrior, hope to see you on the battlefield soon!
