If you ever played Total War before, you would know that is combines a somewhat complex Turnbased map with tactical action packed realtime battles.

If there was one game I would absolutely want to see and play more than anything else in the world it would be a Battletech Universe Strategy game loosley based on the Mechanics of Total War, a large scale Strategy game with both an indepth Turn Based political map of the Star Systems and Planets and Real Time battles during enagagements. Tanks and Infantry as well as mechs and aerospace fighters and VTOL can be built and upgraded, and mechs can have customized loadouts. The game should feature all forms of units (Spaceships, Naval Forces, Mechs, Infantry, Battlearmor, Tanks, aerospace, VTOL, etc. I think battletech makes a perfect setting for a Total War game.

Dropships and certain other classes of spaceships are required to transfer Landtroops from planet to planet, both carriers and dropships should be able to carry aerospace.

Every Planet should have 6 or so battlemaps (depending on the size of the planet) that factions must capture to gain control of the planet (however just having a few under your control will give you the ability to utilise it's resources, however income and political stability will be very low and must be recovered after several turns of control.
Battlemaps could be around 15x15km per map perhaps more, and feature several bases and civilian cities and diverse landscape to add to the tactical element.

Comstar could function similar to the Pope in M2TW and the Shogunate in S2TW, any inner sphere nation that gets out of favor with Comstar could have their Hyperpulse services denied (Thus greatly reducing income, logistics, space fleet speeds, public order, etc.) and Comstar can influence other InnerSphere nations to attack certain factions in order to keep good relations and not lose Hyperpulse services themselves.

The clans themselves could serve as an event on the campaign after a certain amount of turns (and playable after unlocking them :)) at which point they invade the innersphere like a raging fire in the forest (similar to the mongols on M2TW) Inner Sphere factions have a chance to capture clantech, and clan technology becomes availible on the techtree (Although expensive and time consuming)

Perhaps Units should be setup somewhat like this:

Lance = 1 unit (Lances can vary from moderately expensive to extremely expensive depending on mechs and equipment)
Every lance can be customized completely with any available chassis and theres a limit per lance (like say 400 tons or so.)

12-24 Tanks per unit (Mildly expensive per unit)

30-50 Infantry per unit (Extrememly cheap per unit)

24-36 battlearmor per unit (Somewhat cheap to mildly expensive depending on BA)

with a unit cap of 40+ per army.

etc.

Other good things that should be included are good Mechwarrior style soundtrack and mod support of course.
Maybe sometime in the future after both Rome 2 and MWO are a year or so into their lifetime both PGI and CA would work together to make a Battletech total war? (Very unlikely but one could dream.

IMO Battletech makes a perfect setting for a Total War game, (Although doesnt follow Total War Mechanics strictly, if such a game exists there might be some major engine changes)

I think this would be a great game.

Do you agree?

I had never thought of this, but now I can't get it out of my mind!! This would have been a great game.

Any military sci-fi franchise would shine under the Total war game style.
Battletech, the terribly developed DoW series, anything :) .

kinda...... well you know.....got that nice feeling thing going on....yeah i support this idea... might be a long way away but if that can do something like this but in a fully integrated MMO style (as in persistent multiplayer gaming) this would be epic.. kinda would be nice as an additional macro game to MWO, where people playing the strategic big game, dictate and set out the missions that are offered for the MWO players to achieve....but thats going away from the total war style which would be EPIC..

no. the historical aspect of total war, line formations, etc is what makes it great. this idea is utterly terrible.

I imagine your idea working as a combination of total war strategy map and an updated mech commander style real time combat. It would be epic if done correctly.

I cannot see the Total War model working very well with BattleTech. At least not without simplifying the hell out of it, and loosing a large part of the universe due to that.

Personally I'm not a big fan of total war (besides fighting legions of peasants with mega upgraded beserkers) but I would definetly give this game a shot. Would love to see some of these mechanics implemented into the meta game of MWO.. Maybe? Please!

A Battletech game similar to Total War? I'd be down for it.

I love strategy games, and Medieval's turn based system always made me keep coming back for more. I could imagine some sort of strategy PC game like how Dark Crusade or W40k II's campaign worked. Having an RTS based on Battletech would sure be interesting though, since even a population cap wouldn't really fix the fact that you could mass produce 'Mechs.

In the meantime, I'll stick to Supreme Commander. It'll have to be close enough. If you're a little more traditional and like the classics, Supreme Commander's long time predecessor, Total Annihilation, was also a great game.

Not following Total War model exactly but making it similar (Turn based political/economic/logistics management with real time battles)

Not along the lines of Line up your tanks or mechs and not have them move while shoot but something could be worked out.

Also it would not require simplifying but rather different mechanics, while keeping the same basic large maps realistic battles and tactical management.

Mass producing mechs would not be feasible due to extremely high production costs coupled with long manufacturing times. While you would rely on mechs to turned the tide of a battle, you would not rely on them to MAKE the battle, and they do not make fast reaction militia because of the long manufacturing times.

For every 10 mechs you would have around 50 tanks and even more infantry.

The thing that the total war games have going for them is that they try to be battle simulators, with mixed success. A mechwarrior game that was more of a tactical simulator than a board game/CCG would be nice (the mechwarrior tactics game that is coming out looks like its trying to be magic the gathering with mechs). In a simulation, things would not have to be simplified - all the complexity could be going on behind the scenes as long as the interface was good, unlike arma II where the player has to ride roughshod directly on the hoary surface of the simulation, with only the most rudimentary and terrible interface as protection.

And this would be great! All of the mechwarrior games make it seem like there are mechs everywhere all the time, but it would be great to see a game that made them feel like the rare and precious commodity that they are in the lore.

Even better would be a Crusader Kings 2-esque political family management aspect. That Davior heir spending too much time womanizing? Off to the Capellan March to toughen him up and maybe scare the local Duke out of selling secrets to those **** Liao
