Not originally. It has expanded the meaning to a point where virtually any online game is an MMO though. Originally an MMO had a single persistent world that if you wanted to you could cram every player into one area of the world to crash it. However, companies like to teh buzz of MMO, thus apply it to things that really aren't MMOs.
