The only thing (as I sit here on my lunch break) that I don't like are "predator drone" (it must be ancient! And seems very similar to air strike) and the "naval bombardment"... since wet navies are pretty much non-existent, and there hasn't been a non-comstar warship in the inner sphere in decades or centuries.

Otherwise, everything seems very exciting! :D

Still haven't answered the burning question, but it seems to suggest multi-role pilots are capable by leveling part way up each pilot tree. I.e. a lance commander might only want to level up part way up the command tree to get basic command functions then put the rest of his points in the Assault/def tree to run on the frontline lance etc.

That is the critical thing to rember here. You can, in fact, go down multiple Pilot Skill trees, and you should. For example: think like an attacker for a moment and think about how good having HUD Detail 1 and 2 would be. How about Ghost Signature and increased radar range? those things are usefull and good for all the playstyles imo, and nobody should completely focus on just one tree. If a commander only put points into the command tree, he would be at a serious disadvantage when the bullets start to fly his way. Just my two cents....

The "Efficiencies" are really nice & not as sweeping as I thought they'd be. They enhance gameplay but not in a match altering way for those that don't have them.

Very much akin to the BattleMech Quirk system of the TT. One of the great things about the original modules (like "Widow" and "Teeth") was how all the pilots 'Mechs, even if they were the same, had advantages and disadvantages via old damage of years of tech tweeking.

Cool.

I can't help but wonder what "Variants" are? Is that variants like we see in the TROs? If so awesome, and what does that mean for weapon customization?

Yes, it's likely the official variants that are in the various TROs. So if they have two initial variants of Locust (say, the LCT-1E and LCT-1V), you have to get all of the efficiencies in both variants before you get the Elite I efficiencies. And then you have to get all of the Elite I efficiencies in both variants before you can get the Elite II level.

What I'm wondering is this:

If you buy a variant, and then customize the hell out of it ... does it still count as that variant for the tree? Or is it only the official un-customized 'Mechs that will gain efficiencies like that?

Found this and not sure if it computes though. From the Terra Times:

Quote

"The return of WarShips to the battlefields of the Succession Wars has prompted a re-evaluation of military priorities across the Inner Sphere, most particularly within the Federated Suns, which is currently the only nation facing hostile warships in battlespace. However, the question of how long the Federated Suns Navy (FSN) will retain this unhappy distinction is questionable"

Didn't the Succession Wars run into the mid to latter years of the 30th century.

I'd like a clarification. When you say...

Quote

General XP can be spent on any BattleMech efficiency, while BattleMech Chassis XP can only be earned on the current active player BattleMech.

...do you mean the following:
  • General XP can be spent on an efficiency in any BattleMech you own.
  • BatteMech Chassis XP can only be spent on an efficiency for the BattleMech it was earned with.
  • The current active BattleMech selected by the player will earn BattleMech Chassis XP.
In other words, did you intend to say that General and Chassis XP works similar to WoT's tank specific XP and Free XP?

So Tier 7 mech "weapon convergence" gives us some insight into how the targeting system is working.

Lots of info to chew on in here. I'll have to go back and make a list.

Now that would be too limiting, in my opinion. If you train for Variant A of a 'Mech, it should be very easy to pilot Variant B of the same 'Mech. You're just not quite as good with it until you get the same number of efficiencies.

Nah, It looks like you can get all the variants, but upgrades won't be transferred. If you level a PXH-1 and later buy a PXH-1D, you'll have to level it as well. Then to get the better stuff you'll have to level all variants of a given mech. This pretty much confirms that the TRO variants will be available at least.
