Just a thought that MWO seems to want to be heavy on urban combat, but the Ares Convention states that's a no no unless under extreme circumstances.

For that matter, so is orbital bombardment. :D Perhaps following Ares Convention rules are too geeky though. I'm just bored and wanted to make a post.

The Devs said they are planning urban combat to cut down on wide-open field battles, circle strafing and long-range sniping, as noted below.

http://mwomercs.com/...10/2-dev-blog-0

[Excerpt taken from link above.]

"...Rebooting MechWarrior

The initial ideas revolved around revitalizing or rebooting the series by focusing on two areas:
  • Increasing the overall graphical fidelity of the entire game, especially the BattlMechs.
  • Solve some of the long standing gameplay issues from previous MechWarrior games.
From these two key areas, early design pillars emerged in the form of:
  • Urban Combat to address circle strafing and long range sniping.
  • Dynamic Battlefield further expanded on the concepts of Urban Combat and mechs having roles.
  • Dynamic pacing, introduced an early version of one of the final pillars, Information Warfare..."

Something too geeky for mechwarrior? :D

Anyways, don't ruin the feeling of urban combat! You spoiler!

Now I'm sure I'll be followed by people giving logical answers. Enjoy.

*EDIT* Oh look, there was already a logical, well thought out answer, above me. ^^^^^^^

Looking forward to no more running round in circles getting dizzy, hoping my AC/20 reloads faster than the enemies PPC.

(I don't now why but it just feels wrong as a method of combat for giant walking tanks to be spinning in circles).

The Devs have mentioned 4 playable maps. Ice world, Desert world, Jungle world, and Urban world. Pretty safe bet Ice and Desert worlds will be long range, and Jungle and Urban worlds will be more close range.

The Ares conventions were renounced by all adherants at the start of the 1st Succession war.. There are about 250 years of crimes agaisnt humanity history from when they mattered.

Never 'eard such a thing.

Plus, if you wanna get really into the canonical (I hate throwing that word around here, but it's the only one I can think of) bit, there are many wasted planets, left over by the Succession Wars that must have deserted cities ant the like to play with/in...

theres no such thing as an "objective" in the middle of nowhere. they are always near a town or city. besides i dont think any of the great houses payed too close attention to those rules anyways

The thing about breaking rules is...someone has to be both willing and able to call you on it. And if you're the side who just lost the war... you're probably not too eager to start another by threatening the head of a military force that already defeated you with charges of war crimes.

No need for any of them to be limited to any one range.

Ex. Ice - Very large glacier that is split along several large, long crevasses. Finding a ramp up and out of a crevasse would be the Scouts' job. Delaying the enemy from exiting theirs would be the Medium and Heavy's job.

Desert - Doesn't have to be a wide open area either. Take the above example and instead of crevasses use box canyons, etc.

Also weather could (should) play a major factor in executing a winning strategy.

Our RL world is replete with many examples beyond the stock desert/jungle/etc.

Also, Naval Bombardment also doesn't necessarily mean ORBITAL bombardment. It could be refering to dropships, or even blue-water ships.

There are a few factions and Merc Corps who ad-hear to the Ares Convention at this time. Though, not many.

Actually, even though the Ares Conventions were renounced, -most- people follow a streamlined version of them... basically:
no nukes
no orbital bombardment
no destroying jumpships

Example of no nukes: final battle of Gibson (read Ideal War, IIRC) - the Knights of the Inner Sphere completely flipped out when they were up against a group of Davy Crockett nukes, pretty well went hell-bent to destroy them before they could be used, though 1 was able to detonate.
Example of no orbital bombardment: Clan invasion of Turtle Bay. General populace flipped out when the Smoke Jags took it out from orbit.
Example of no destroying Jumpships: All over the place.

So yes, the Ares Conventions aren't necessarily always followed, the streamlined and common BIG issue items are followed. Surrenders aren't always honored, urban combat occurs, and... off the top of my head, I can't think of any bio-warfare that happened, but I'm sure there was some.

The Wolf's Dragoons, and I would assume also Snord's Irregulars. The only faction I can say with confidence of adherence to the Ares Convention is the Wolf's Dragoons however.

I really like the urban combat idea. I thought it was pretty cool when in the trailer a scout jump jetted on top of a building and the guy blew the building up.

Even in a city you can have long sight lines ie main roads or parks without being able to circle strafe, Tou'll have mechs popping out of side alleys firing and into the alley the other side, or sidestepping out and back if they put it in (alley tarting? :))
