Ok I did a search on this and maybe Im stupid but found nothing. SO...

any way I think the heads up display from Mechwarrior 2 was the best of all the games .
Because it used a simple color scheme for the different weapons groups and offered an EZ way to change or customize your preferred groups or weapons fire sequence .
it may seem at first to be of little matter, but if your in a Mech that is say a stock version you have to deal with weapons that you dont like or arnt used to, setting this up right makes a big difference in your ability and game playing (how many times have you reverted to an alph-strike when you cant get the right weapon fire-ready?)

any way any thoughts on the subject?

Im sorry when my sense of humor wasnt funny, or out of line, and mostly im sorry when Im misunderstood. I want you all to know Im just trying to make a point, not hurt anybody.

sorry.

I think preference will be based off of the individual players. You obviously prefer MW2 where as I prefer the MW3 HUD. I think this might be easily compromised by either combining the different games HUDs or to make the player be able to change it.

I would be totally happy with the Mechwarrior 3 hud , it was mainly the same as Mechwarrior 2 , with the exception of the different colors for different groups , and Mech 3 did introduce (to me anyway) the use of the mouse.

In an ideal world , (wish list)
I would like to use a 3 button mouse with a wheel
.
left button fire,

wheel cycles through weapons or weapons groups depending on whether group or single fire is selected

right button would operate the zoom.

mouse movement moves torso

each weapon group would be a different color (this I never seen as customizable)
weapon groups would be numbered 1,2,3 ect.
1 being on top 2 under it 3 under it ect.
any weapon should be able to be moved to any group
any group should be able to chain fire or singe fire or entire group fire
chain fire should be able to chain fire (cycle through) groups or not to (instead of chain fire individual weapons fire entire groups or not)

point being the mouse wheel could cycle to groups or individual weapons depends on keyboard button selection .what the wheel has selected will be what fires.

I know alot of guys play with joysticks and that is also similar problems with setting up or mapping buttons the way you like .

Ive played all the games MWLL also and they give you some freedom , these specifics for grouping and fire mode have never been worked out IMHO very well MWLL lets you have many mouse buttons, but who uses that?

its really only a problem with many different weapon types, ranges, and like I mentioned before with weapons you dont like or arnt used to.

again my point is (hope) that weapon grouping and selection, and fire modes be thought through and full customization be aloud as this has always, IMHO been over looked being a minor function as it is ,

but hey this is the suggestion forum and I think this would be an EZ thing to program in the game and make playing all the more fun

Im sure devs make them half transparent since there is no 3rd person view we would need a great deal of visibility

Uh... what?
Why do we need that if everyone has the same restricted view?

Just take a look at the Hunchback cockpit preview. You can see that it implements several small screens for side view, while sporting a large front view window. From the look of it, we will be well immersed into the mechs cockpit, just like we should. This will be a simulator and a simulator should try to be as close to a percieved reality as possible. The wide view we are used to from 3rd person isn't very realistic.

I would love it, if we didn't even get an HUD that provides all the information that previous incarnations did. Just targeting reticule, possible targets and heading. And everything else should be incorporated into the cockpit. That would be the simulator feeling I'm missing since the Wing Commander, X-Wing or similar games.

This seems to be a recurrent misconception about BattleMechs due to the previous MW video games not getting this aspect right.

...

The pilots do not gain the majority or even a sizable chunk of the data about the field of battle around them, visual or otherwise, from looking out of their view screens.

They gain the overwhelming majority of information from the sensor readouts on the main hud and/or on the hud displayed in their neurohelmets; and the sensors put in a titanic amount of information to the computers, which combine all of that data down into a simplified form with important things tagged with graphic icons.

There is also a visual sensor display, either on the main hud or in the helmet, or on a mode switch, that compresses a full 360' degree view into either 160 or 180 degrees, with the various firing arcs delineated in it.

BattleMech cockpits are not blind; they are CRAMMED full of information from the 'Mechs sensors, of which there are a LOT, and they are situated all around the 'Mech, with redundant fall backs.

Finn awesome post. I did see in the trailor what looked like a "helmet visor HUD" which moved with the vision of the pilot. I originally was going to suggest that virtural screens or readouts be projected on panels just forward of the cockpit shield but realistically.. you wouldn't want a sheet of glass in there with you. It might need to change to red automatically if you are running an op at night. In fact.. all ambient in-cabin lighting should be red, or else the screens should have less luminosity.

when i say different colors, what I mean is more than one color, I should say Multi colored.

Im a visual person I see different things in different colors ,helps my reflexes , Eye hand coordination.

I just see it quicker when Im in a hurry.

I color coordinate every thing from my cars , to my house even my shirt and trousers (mostly anyway)

It is my opinion, that there should be customizable HUD colors, and transparencies. I'm sure by the year 3049 the opacity and color of hud projection will be fully customizable. In that much I can say the technology should be realistic, regardless.

this is what i would expect, as to the "style", after seeing the trailer, well i love it so far, it is new and so is the reboot, why make it like an older version? a new day , a new way :)
i do however think we will be impressed
