"Contact at range. 5 enemy mechs ranging in weight class. One limping. 650m to my 12, moving slowly bearing roughly 9-0. Requesting orders."

James began to key his mike to start giving orders when the second message came through.

"Hostiles on foot, 150m to my 12 right side, carrying hostage."

James stalked his mech into the street and zoomed in on the group of men running across the street. The hostage was half running/half being carried by four Dalian mercs and appeared to have been beaten. James moved the crosshair for his twin medium lasers to a point just in front of the group of men and sqeezed the trigger. The twin emerald beams cut molten divots into the ferrocrete roadsurface, missing the men but cutting off their route across the street. Panicked, the men dropped their hostage and fled in four different directions.

James flipped on his external speakers, as the hostage began to heave himself up from the ferrocrete.

"Get out of here and get safe. GO!"

James switched his comms back to tightbeam as the man scrambled out of the street and signalled Orc and Damon.

"Damon, lets get moving - we can't take the chance that, that heavy lance saw my little light show. We are way undergunned and need to be smart about this. I'm moving us into the city, so that we can use the taller building to screen our movements more effectively when we engage."

James turned his mech towards Orc, and his imposing axe.

"Orc, since you have ghost targets online, and you have that axe, we are going to invert the triangle. You and Damon take up points roughly 100m apart from one another, I'm going in behind you guys."

Using his mech's computer, James tighbeamed the waypoints he wanted their lance to use. His plan was to have the three of them double back slightly and change the vector of attack to come from a surprise angle. The last thing James wanted was to get into contact with a heavy lance in front, and a raging dropship battle behind. Out of necessity, the group needed to engage the superior force using hit and run tactics, and take advantage of the short range power of their weapons.

"Damon, if you get into contact, I want you to fall back and to the right. You will come in between Orc and I and get out of danger. From there, engage as you see fit. We are a smaller force, but that can work to our advantage. We can be more nimble through the city center, and hopefully draw them away from one another."

Just as Damon was preparing to jump down from the building he was perched on, James reflexively ducked as the LAM flew by from behind and began circling. James tried to track with his guns and missiles but was unable to get a solid lock before the LAM flew out of range. James' eyes glanced down to his computer readout on the contact. Due to the EECM, he computer was able to identify the LAM as a Phoenix Hawk. James knew that was a DCMS model and narrowed his eyes.

James throttled his mech up behind the two others as they began moving deeper into the city, weaving between buildings, and staying in visual contact as much as possible. James keyed his mike to his lance.

"Eyes up guys, that's a drac fighter. No idea on intentions but it could be running recce for that heavy lance. Let's hope that other fighter can keep him occupied. We're running out of time."

As he settled back into his command couch and felt the rhythmic thud of his mech's footfalls, James wondered what he was getting into. As a Captain in the Rangers, he knew combat, and he knew losing men came with the territory. This was different however. These men were comrades by chance, and now he was leading them into combat, against a superior force, without confirmed aircover. The city outside his viewscreen was a testament to the firepower these mercs had brought with them. Although enemy contacts were sparse at this point, he knew in a few moments things would get ugly quickly. James' eyes lit up as another LRM volley lit off from the skyline in front of him. He followed the missile plume back to its source, and it was becoming uncomfortably close.

James' eyes drifted back to his computer read outs on his weapons, and satisfied himself one last time that everything was satisfactory. Closing his eyes and feeling his mech move through the streets, James gathered himself to prepare for contact with the enemy. Slowly he opened his eyes as his computer began chirping with enemy contacts...

[[Charles - I'm not purposefully ignoring you, but as the general comms have been jammed this whole time - we aren't monitoring those channels as the static was killing us too ;)

As for orientation, the mechs are to Damon's 12. We are moving to Damon's 3 oclock and circling around in that direction. The dropship battle is to Damon's 9 oclock. The forest is to our 6 oclock. We are going to come around and hit the heavy lance from their 3 oclock and push them back towards the dropship battle. Hopefully Graaf, Thom, and Lina - we can meet up after so long in engaging the heavy lance.]]

[[Lol yeah, sorry about that but it's the only course of action that made any sense. The only other thing would be to ride in a jump seat in one of our mechs - but you'd broil alive. Perhaps find an abandoned tank to hop in - or a mech (dunno if you wanted to be a mech warrior). Alternatively, you could run toward the dropship battle, and perhaps help out there? Grab a rifle and flag down one of the hovertanks either Drac or Thom are in. Maybe Thom in his bid to get in his mech, you can meet up with him and either grab the hover tank or help repair his mech?]]

A green light lit up on the dashboard.
Ghost Targets ready. Let’s roll.

The Grand Dragon came up on the other side of the street and spotted the small group with the hostage. The Centurion entered the street and fired a pair of Medium Lasers ahead of the group. He pulled a trigger, firing off the Medium Pulse Lasers. They struck the ground behind the mercs, kicking up debris and cutting off their path of retreat. Panicked, the men dropped their hostage and fled in four different directions.

Looks like he has that handled…

The ‘mech in red turned to the ‘mech in blue.

He received the waypoints and studied them briefly.
Looks good.

"Eyes up guys, that's a drac fighter. No idea on intentions but it could be running recce for that heavy lance. Let's hope that other fighter can keep him occupied. We're running out of time."

Drac? What the hell is the DCMS doing here?

He took up his position in the triangle and began to—

“Contact! 800 meters! Thug!”

In a stroke of luck (or lack thereof), the Grand Dragon and the Thug passed down a street at the same moment and spotted each other. The Thug stopped and prepared to ready its weapons.

“Taking fire!”

He snap-fired his PPC as the 80-tonner loosed two PPCs of its own. The ER PPC zipped past the Assault ‘mech to hit the corner of a building behind it. The two PPCs also missed, though one passed less than 2 meters above the Grand Dragon’s head.

Looks like Ghost Targets are in good order…!

Before either ‘mech could recharge its weapons, contact was lost as the heavy ‘mech passed behind a building.

[[Thom's about to get mounted up in my next posting. His mech is repaired, more or less. He's welcome to have the hovercraft (though it's kinda beat up now) or teaming up with Thom's cousin, Markus. But he's gonna have to dodge infantry patrols, looters, and atleast one tank looking for the hovercraft to make it to the garage. Not easy, but not impossible.]]

[[This is a bit long winded but trying to make up for lost time hopefully youll like it]]

Durgan got up looking around realizing that his captors had fled from the incoming fire, he looked to see if he could signal his savoir but alas his hero had already started moving off and without his gear there was no chance to get the mechs attention. Durgan noticed a rifle sitting on the ground likely dropped by the fleeing men, Durgan pulled the charging handle back ejecting a round and looking over the weapons.

Durgan thought to himself Thank god it’s in working condition time to find some help.

Durgan tried to turn and orient himself, but was unable to turn to far the pain came back from his wound reminding him of his frailty. Durgan looked around taking in all the destruction the streets were covered in rumble the few buildings left standing were either riddled with holes or on fire Durgan knew he couldn’t find any help here so he took off heading towards the garages, he knew that was his best bet for help or at least a vehicle. Durgan keep to the alley ways and side streets as he worked his way through the ruins left of the once peaceful city, things had been pretty easy until Durgan came to a Delian check point blocking his way across the bridge. Durgan sit behind cover as long as he could trying to figure out a way to slip through the blockade but there was nothing obvious, instead Durgan noticed a propane tank sitting on the corner of a dumpster but there looked to be no way to get to it without being seen. Durgan gathered up his nerve and got as close as he could without revealing himself. As he peered out from the corner he waited until the guards crossed path and then jumped out racing down the side of the building almost to the tank Durgan heard one of the guards

“Hey you stop right there”

Durgan ignored the warning grabbing the tank and flinging it as hard as he could towards the blockade, Durgan slide on the ground taking aim at the tank rolling around the Delian infantryman’s feet. The guards had gather around the commotion trying to see what was happening this would work to Durgans advantage if he could set the tank off. Realizing what was happening the guards tried to get away but it was too late Durgan opened up on the tank it only took a few rounds and the tank exploded fling debris and flames in all directions. Durgan jumped up and started running towards the barricade firing rounds at the remaining guards that tried to regain their composure. The rounds flew wildly around as Durgan hadn’t fired a rifle in a while all he was hoping was to keep the guards down. Durgan ran around the concrete slab running at full speed not stopping for anything, Durgan ran out of ammo with no other clips he simply flung the rifle to the side continuing to run. Little over a mile later Durgan felt he had lost any followers and stopped in a looted store catching his breath and peering out the broken glass trying to figure out how much further he had to go.

Gasping for air Durgan let out a sigh of relief “Thank god I’m almost there another few more blocks to go.”

Durgan walked up and down the few remaining isles still left standing looking for any sort of pain reliever the pain in his side was dull but still present. Durgan found a bottle of over the counter pain relievers pulling the bottle down Durgan swallowing a few pills he headed back out the broken window and down the street. The few remaining blocks went by quietly Durgan came upon the Garages looking around things were defiantly not as he had left them the day before. Durgan walked through the road killed left behind from whatever slammed through the doors. Durgan creped in the garage looking around looking for what had caused the wreckage he noticed a Delian hovercraft parked in the garage, he approached the vehicle slowly keeping a eye out for more Delian but none were to be found. As Durgan looked over the hovercraft he noticed the blood along the front of it he knew that whoever was driving this wasn’t working with the Delian as this realization came to him he noticed a man out of the corner of his eye. Durgan took cover against the hovercraft leaning out unnoticed he examined the man he wasn’t in a Delian uniform.

Durgan thought to himself Got nothing to loss.

Durgan walked out revealing himself “Hey you what are you doing here”

Durgan took an aggressive stance ready for anything waiting for a reply from the man.

[[Eep. I hope GM Grafvitnir picks this up. Am a talker rather then a fighter myself]]

“Waah!” Azman exclaimed to himself in a manly warcry of surprise. The flash of medium lasers up ahead startled him. (Not that a manly warrior like Azman can get startled easily mind you. *flash of medium lasers* Waah!)

Those mediums lasers definitely came from a mech but…

Azman’s Vulcan's radar had been getting goofy all of a sudden and Azman couldn’t be sure. Not that Azman relied on radars much. He was more to the school of thought that ‘if you don’t see your enemy then there is no enemy nearby’ optimistic mindset.

“Enemies nearby” came the radioed woman’s voice from the Thug - Lance Leader of the reinforced Delian Guards Heavy Lance.

Enemies… Again Azman had to calculate which side was he actually on….

Instead of firing off panicked shots, swearing and maybe doing a short jigg as Azman would have done in this situation, or many other situations, lethal or non-lethal, the reinforced Delian Guards Heavy Lance simply fall calmly into formation.

In a shape of a ‘T’, with the Thug taking centre, the Flashman and Jagermech on the flanks and the Bombardier at the back. The Urbanmech sprinted a little in front of the Thug only to sprint back behind the Thug and then back again. The Urbanmech’s spritely movements a sharp contrast to the lumbering steps of the heavier battlemechs about. There was certainly a spring in the Urbie.

At least someone’s all hyped out for a fight.

Azman looked around. He was always a fan of providing moral support whenever he was part of a team. Providing moral support usually meant being at the back. The silent Vulcan limped cheerfully behind to the quiet Bombardier whom Azman pegged as the strong silent type.

Hello Mr Bombardier! My name is Silent Vulcan. Nice to meet you.

The Thug exchanged PPC shots at the distance.

Crap.

The Flashman and the Jagermech began to pincer in on the Thug’s attacker. Azman couldn’t see what or who through the smoke and the fog of war. The Urbanmech let loose a shot from its AC 10 autocannon.

This is going to be a long day.

[[ps. Nice writing Durgan! ;)

pps. That’s Mr ‘I-Like-Beef-Jerky’. Thank you very much. *nod self*

ppps. Very important RP question that may concern the whole Windborne Raven Thread. To Thom/Rory/Durgan or to Draco/Nathan – does your hovercraft have hydraulics? :D

"Aerospace fighter pilot, this is Sho-sa Charles Martell, but just call me 'Salaryman' for brevity's sake. We need to find a location to get this battle away from a populated area if at all possible. That Delian heavy lance doesn't look like they're going to care much about collateral damage." He took a breath, "I am well aware that you have no reason to trust me, but frankly I really do not care, the people of that town are more important."

[[This is from Phiro's point of view, as I kinda can't do anything right now, till we get out of town. As I am stuck in a gunnerless hovercraft.]]
"Okay Sal', I'll fly with you,"
Draco saw the mechs cover the downed Clint, and then the opening phases of the firefight. He maneuvered his fighter in line with the dracs, and then broke formation. He spotted the Thug first, and decided to hit it.

He accelerated to as fast as his fighter would go, and broke the sound barrier, creating a sonic boom just above it. He then banked left. His master alarm sounded, and he saw a flight of LRMs head toward him. He then broke back right, and started to weave into the street. Pulling up, he started to grab sky, the LRMs still trailing. He broke mach 2, and his body was feeling the Gs. When he was at 900 meters, he cut the engine, and pulled back on the stick, going into a dive. He heard the master alarm go off again, and saw the missiles loose from the mech, again, but this time the had to adjust downward to track. Perfect. He watched as the ground came closer, and at the last second, fired his engines, and pulled up, leveling off about ten meters above the street. He was headed strait for the Bombardier. It turned with surprise at his move, and he watched the pilot loose an SRM salvo wildly, trying to get Phiro to pull up. Phiro watched a missile strike a building up ahead, and cause it to start to crumple, so he immediately jerked the stick up to avoid, rolling back to try and get a shot with his mediums. He went screaming by the Bombardier, but the missiles, were still impacting it. They were locked on to Phiro, but they had run out of fuel, and so, flew right into the bombardier. Phiro circled over, waiting for another chance.
"So Sal -" He would've sworn that he heard a curse on the other end.
"Shall we do a little of the one, two?"

Lina made certain her mic was off, then began swearing in every language she knew, as the LRM fire streaked in, and she and Graaf begain pulling back from the depot before the advancing assault lance arrived. She momentarily considered going "scorched earth," and firing a few SRMs into the depot to deny its supplies to the Dalians, but stayed her hand, on the chance that some of the KunsArme or other friendly personnel might yet be alive within. After all, as she'd told Graaf, she'd not had time for a thorough search.

It was frustrating. Not only had Lina hoped to regroup before engaging, she'd wanted to pull the fight to the outskirts of Rundvik, if not out of the city altogether. Her unit, under policies she herself helped draft, avoided FIBUA -- Fighting In Built-Up Areas -- as much as humanly possible: no one who'd spent much time on Alexandria wished what that planet had suffered on anyone else. The damage the starport town had already taken was silent testament as to why.

But then, the Dalians could hardly be trusted to walk out of the city and the natural fortifications it provided, could they? With them already having a firm grip on the city, and no practical way to get the civilian population out and to safety, the only way to end this could well be to destroy the enemy as quickly as possible.

She cued her external mic, trying to catch Thom before he got out of earshot: "Get your 'Mech and get back here fast! Tell anyone you run into the same. I'll buy you as much time as I can!"

If you can, she begged silently of any civilians still in the area, please forgive me....

"Graaf!" she called again. "I'm going after their missile boat, then I'll distract the rest of them as best I can. Told Thom to get anyone he found back here to join you. When they get here, take command: you're the ranking KungsArme member I believe, and we need a native leading the charge! Lycka till, Graaf! Give 'em one for me!"

And with that she was gone, her jump jets carrying her over the buildings and (she hoped) behind the enemy, who'd turned to engage another target. While the Dervish was at its core a fire-support design, people tended to forget that it was fairly fast, it had enough firepower to handle itself close in...and it could jump. WIth any luck, she could find the LRM-firer while avoiding its lancemates.

[....wow, so pretty much everyone is after these guys...]

Damon watched as the formations of friendly and enemy mechs formed on the battlefield, the five enemy mechs forming up in an awkward 'T' and marched semi-diagonally towards his position, intent on pursuing Orc's Dragon. Fortunately, the streets made the march awkward and at the very least the now ID'ed Thug, Urbanmech, and Bombardier were in his view, some parts obscured by buildings.

Suddenly out of nowhere, a lone areospace fighter dove into the fight, breaking the soundbarrier right above the Thug. Damon felt the blast as well from 600m away, as he watched every single window within at least a one kilo radius shatter. I hope that other guy isn't on the street right now...or he's screwed.

Damon couldn't key the comms fast enough to try and contact the insane pilot. Damon watched as he swooped, dove, and burst out from a near suicide dive one street over, only to gun it for the Bombardier and exchange a salvo of SRMs with it. Some of the SRMs hit the Bombardier, causing minor craters on the mechs armor. The rest exploded around, tearing up ferroconcrete and buildings alike.

That fighter is going to do more damage in this city than the Delians...combined....

The Thug shot off a PPC at the retreating fighter, as it swooped to join the Drac LAM that had spotted Damon earlier

Well sh**....no wonder...those to are working together. Damon made a mental note to take time both out or at the very least chase them off, and keyed them as enemies on his radar.

First things first...

Damon watched the approach of the formation as it regrouped, mechs breaking off to pincer the Dragon. Orc for his part played the piper, dancing between buildings and firing off shots from his PPC and medium lasers, which either missed or achieved glancing blows as he tried to stay out of range.

Now just 300m away, The Thug and its crew had the Dragon pinned. stuck in a large alley 150m from his position, the Dragon had a Thug and Vulcan to its 12, a Bombardier and Jagermech to his 3. The Urbanmech Damon had lost, but knew he was coming around to the 9, which would line up perfectly on Damons 3. Damon held his breath, knowing he had seconds to pull this off right.

Keying the comm and laser-private channel, he spoke his last words before all hell was to break lose.

"Waiting for urbanmech at your 9 Orc. When I fire, James move up and Orc withdraw to my position ASAP. We'll crash their right flank and push into the city and around towards the dropships."

Then it happened.

As promised, the urbanmech appeared, Jumping onto a building immediately across the street from Damon from an alleyway, on to a building one story lower than his. Just at the same time, Damon's HUD flashed, and just 150m behind the Urbanmech approached a Flashman, breaking into a run down the street.

"Flashman at my 12! Orc, get out of there and get to my position, NOW!!!"

And with that, Damon fired, unleasing twin large lasers at the unsuspecting urbie, blowing through its "rear" armor with a timed shot and liquidating its AC/10, which resulted in one hell of a bang when its ammo suddenly cooked off.

Not waiting for the Flashman to get ideas, Damon turned and jumped, riding the hot air to another rooftop, out of line from the flashman and away from Orc and James. It was then that Damon picked up on a new signal, that didn't match any of the previous signals out there. He hoped it was a friendly.

If they got lucky, they might be able to run away.

[[Ok, just so you know, I fled to my 10 o'clock to a 2 story building. It's out of view from the Flashman for now (4 story building thats not reinforced between us), but don't worry I'll be back. Feel free to use my Jenner and it's Jumping ability as a flanking manuevre.

Oh, and Orc....better move, that building the Urbanmech was standing on isn't going to stand much longer with that AC-10 cooking off, and you don't want to be pinned by that Flashman...]]

Well this is just dandy…

Fighting in a city he was completely unfamiliar was certainly an unenviable position. So finding himself cornered in an alleyway came as no surprise.

The Thug and a Vulcan, badly damaged and limping, stood ahead of him. A Bombardier and Jagermech were off to his right.

That leaves one…

An Urbanmech, eh?

As if on cue, the Urbanmech jumped up onto the building to his left.

Looks like that’s my escape route.

A sixth ‘mech? Oh, for the love of--!

A pair of large lasers shot from atop a building further to his left, blasting the light ‘mech in the back. The shot drilled through the rear armor, setting off the AC/10 ammo stored within.

******* hell, Damon!

By this time, the Grand Dragon had already turned to its left and began to run.

He fired one last shot from his PPC as he began to vacate the city. The Thug fired its two PPCs, missing with one and glancing off the hatchet with the other. SRMs and Autocannon rounds chased after him as he passed the building on which the Urbanmech stood.

The Grand Dragon reached its top speed as an explosion erupted behind him, collapsing the building underneath in a fiery conflagration.

That should slow them down for a bit.

He turned on his external mic and focused his attention ahead of him, almost sensing the Flashman before he saw it coming into view.

Right into the path of his charging ‘mech.

[[jeepers Damon - a flashman?! 3 Large lasers and 5 medium lasers? You don't make things easy do you?]]

It's amazing how things can go so wrong so quickly...

Time seemed to slow for James as the buildings and sky around him seemed to crumble and explode all at once.

It had been a good plan...

James had attempted to maximize his force's advantages by using surprise, in addition to harassing fire, to slowly whittle down the much larger force of mechs. No plan survives contact with the enemy, however, and Orc nearly colliding with the Thug had changed everything.

He looked outside of his viewscreen and watched Damon's Jenner jet away from one building as nearby an Urbanmech's ammunition began to cook off. The sad little mech stood rigidly in place, it's cylindrical body rocking with tremors as the autocannon ammo within its body began cooking off. Under different circumstances one could have mistaken the plucky little mech for attempting to dance. As the building began to come apart, James saw a Flashman backing off from the rubble.

"Flashman at my 12! Orc, get out of there and get to my position, NOW!!!"

James heard Damon's frantic call and turned to look in Orc's direction. James' command map painted a grim image of the situation. Boxed in by four larger mechs, Orc was weaving between buildings, trying to avoid as much fire as possible. Unfortunately this was leading him away from his allies, and further from salvation. On the other hand, it was exposing the rears of this assailants to James. Throttling up and into the street, James began a headlong sprint towards the Thug and the Vulcan exchanging fire with the Dragon. His mech had been obscured by buildings previously, and his rapid advance left little time for his victims to turn and face the new threat.

The instant the twin gold dots pulsed on the back of the thug, James squeezed both of his triggers and smiled as he felt the familier rumble of his Luxor-D Autocannon shaking his mech. The explosive rounds flew true, impacting first on the back of the Thug's right knee, shattering most of the armor there and tracking further up the hip of the huge mech. The twin medium lasers melted a line of armor from the back of the thug, but did no real damage. The ten LRMs however, provided a much more welcome result. Their tiny explosions mushrooming across the back of the Thug, it caused it to miss fire it's twin PPCs, just missing a surging Grand Dragon running down a parallel street.

Finding himself now at the tip of the spear, at a full sprint toward four heavier, angry mechs - James decided he needed to fall back. Unable to slow his momentum quickly, James used the Vulcan to assist him. Leading with his left shoulder, James collided with the turning Vulcan and sent it crashing into a ruined building lining the street. James fired a snapshot at the Thug with his autocannon, worrying more armor from the right leg but doing no further damage, and began heading back the way he came. Alone and temporarily out of sight of the merc mechs, James hoped that his new comrades were fairing well.

[[Noted and agreed Lina. I'll wait for Graaf to come back and see where he wants to take this. Undoubtedly, he will not be pleased at a full fledged battle going on down town]]

[[This is from Phiro's point of view, as I kinda can't do anything right now, till we get out of town. As I am stuck in a gunnerless hovercraft.]]
"So Sal -" He would've sworn that he heard a curse on the other end.
"Shall we do a little of the one, two?"

Charles nodded and smiled, "Good idea, but it looks like other mechs have engaged, and I am a firm believer that close air support and friendly fire should be easy to tell apart." He thought for a couple of seconds, "I have an idea, we need to lure that Thug into a more open area...." He trailed off, seeing the Dervish heading towards the fray. "Looks like the Dervish is hunting the Bombardier, I think drawing that Thug's attention and drawing it away from her path would be the best bet. If we can get it to an open area, the other friendly mechs can bring their heavy weapons to bear without concern for collateral damage."

Charles looked over the mech melee below, saying it was chaotic would be the understatement of the millenium. The collateral damage that had occurred already was bad, and was likely to get worse before the night was done.

"Try to contact any of the friendly mechs down in that mess, and I'll contact the Dervish and let her know what's ahead of her. It's time to get this mess somewhat in order."

[[Yeah, we need to wait for a bit, just needed to get caught up to the rest of y'all.]]

[[Might I humbly suggest we give Grafvitnir (a.k.a. He who gave us this wonderful thread) I little time to catch up, just to be fair? XD ]]

Yes, yes, parley! parley! parley! *looks around nervously* Am hoping GM could role-play the DG Heavy Lance. Character Azman gives his pov but know my own limits and lack the technical and descriptive knowledge to beef up the response of the DG Heavy Lance. A fight is only as good as the opposition and this big battlemech battle deserves to be good! ;) So parley! *hides behind a building*

In the intermission, lets all go back to the Windborne Raven, have some drinks and watch a show.

Ps. wish I had that detective's hat :D ]]

((The map looks good, Nomad.

However, I think the location of the Thug/Vulcan should be switched with the Bombardier/Jagermech.
Since the Thug/Vulcan was in front of me, the Bombardier/Jagermech were to my right, and I turned straight left and ran.
