James began to key his mike to start giving orders when the second message came through.
"Hostiles on foot, 150m to my 12 right side, carrying hostage."
James stalked his mech into the street and zoomed in on the group of men running across the street. The hostage was half running/half being carried by four Dalian mercs and appeared to have been beaten. James moved the crosshair for his twin medium lasers to a point just in front of the group of men and sqeezed the trigger. The twin emerald beams cut molten divots into the ferrocrete roadsurface, missing the men but cutting off their route across the street. Panicked, the men dropped their hostage and fled in four different directions.
James flipped on his external speakers, as the hostage began to heave himself up from the ferrocrete.
"Get out of here and get safe. GO!"
James switched his comms back to tightbeam as the man scrambled out of the street and signalled Orc and Damon.
"Damon, lets get moving - we can't take the chance that, that heavy lance saw my little light show. We are way undergunned and need to be smart about this. I'm moving us into the city, so that we can use the taller building to screen our movements more effectively when we engage."
James turned his mech towards Orc, and his imposing axe.
"Orc, since you have ghost targets online, and you have that axe, we are going to invert the triangle. You and Damon take up points roughly 100m apart from one another, I'm going in behind you guys."
Using his mech's computer, James tighbeamed the waypoints he wanted their lance to use. His plan was to have the three of them double back slightly and change the vector of attack to come from a surprise angle. The last thing James wanted was to get into contact with a heavy lance in front, and a raging dropship battle behind. Out of necessity, the group needed to engage the superior force using hit and run tactics, and take advantage of the short range power of their weapons.
"Damon, if you get into contact, I want you to fall back and to the right. You will come in between Orc and I and get out of danger. From there, engage as you see fit. We are a smaller force, but that can work to our advantage. We can be more nimble through the city center, and hopefully draw them away from one another."
Just as Damon was preparing to jump down from the building he was perched on, James reflexively ducked as the LAM flew by from behind and began circling. James tried to track with his guns and missiles but was unable to get a solid lock before the LAM flew out of range. James' eyes glanced down to his computer readout on the contact. Due to the EECM, he computer was able to identify the LAM as a Phoenix Hawk. James knew that was a DCMS model and narrowed his eyes.
James throttled his mech up behind the two others as they began moving deeper into the city, weaving between buildings, and staying in visual contact as much as possible. James keyed his mike to his lance.
"Eyes up guys, that's a drac fighter. No idea on intentions but it could be running recce for that heavy lance. Let's hope that other fighter can keep him occupied. We're running out of time."
As he settled back into his command couch and felt the rhythmic thud of his mech's footfalls, James wondered what he was getting into. As a Captain in the Rangers, he knew combat, and he knew losing men came with the territory. This was different however. These men were comrades by chance, and now he was leading them into combat, against a superior force, without confirmed aircover. The city outside his viewscreen was a testament to the firepower these mercs had brought with them. Although enemy contacts were sparse at this point, he knew in a few moments things would get ugly quickly. James' eyes lit up as another LRM volley lit off from the skyline in front of him. He followed the missile plume back to its source, and it was becoming uncomfortably close.
James' eyes drifted back to his computer read outs on his weapons, and satisfied himself one last time that everything was satisfactory. Closing his eyes and feeling his mech move through the streets, James gathered himself to prepare for contact with the enemy. Slowly he opened his eyes as his computer began chirping with enemy contacts...
[[Charles - I'm not purposefully ignoring you, but as the general comms have been jammed this whole time - we aren't monitoring those channels as the static was killing us too
As for orientation, the mechs are to Damon's 12. We are moving to Damon's 3 oclock and circling around in that direction. The dropship battle is to Damon's 9 oclock. The forest is to our 6 oclock. We are going to come around and hit the heavy lance from their 3 oclock and push them back towards the dropship battle. Hopefully Graaf, Thom, and Lina - we can meet up after so long in engaging the heavy lance.]]
