So, I thought the whole MW scean was dead until today. Im so happy to have stumbled upon this site.
I have so many questions for you guys, but i will start with this one:
Is the battle tech boardgame the same as the old MW age of destruction and its expansion packs? if so, i would love to see one of my fav table top games again.

In answer to your question, I belive its similar but not quite the same. If I understand AoD correctly, the rules are a bit simpler for faster gameplay. Other than that, Battletech is a minitures based wargame so it is in many ways the same. I never got into AoD myself, being raised on the "classic" game. Someone that has played AoD might be able to give you a better answer to your question however. But I hope I steared you in the right direction. Im sure youll enjoy Battletech if you pick up the boxed set and start playing with a few friends.

The MechWarrior scene is far from dead. You can download MW4:Vengeance for free now and a lot of people still play it online, you can also download MechCommander 2 for free now. And then there is MechWarrior: Living Legends of course. 2012 will see the release of MechWarrior: Online and also MechWarrior: Tactics as well as MechWarrior: Tactical Command.

Also, I doubt Battletech would ever truly die. It has a deep and rich IP that will always survive. It may not always be in the spotlight due to foolish control of that said IP but it's always there, waiting to be re-energized.

No, but yes, sorry for the Vorlon or Minbari answering but I'll explain.
Battletech, the table top game, shares its universe with the daughter game Mechwarrior: Dark Age (Mechwarrior: Age of Destruction).
During the time that Dark Age was out the Battletech game was still set in the past. Dark Age focused right around the 3100s with a dying Republic of the Sphere while Battletech was just dealing with the Word of Blake Jihad of 3070 or so.
With Dark Age now defunct production-wise there still are players out enjoying the game. Battletech has just finished the Jihad era with the destruction of the Word of Blake and the establishment of the Republic of the Sphere.
Now Battletech's present time is somewhere around 3087 with the Republic flexing its muscle and showing that it deserves a chance to live.
Outside the Universe PoV the game itself went through a slight change with the inclusion of Quick Strike rules.
Long story short: Quick-Strike is the ability to play with Dark Age figures using Battleforce stats on Miniature terrain rules for Battletech's normal Total Warfare scale.
So yes Dark Age and Battletech are one, but seperate as well. If you want to buy the plastic minis from ebay or a friend and play using the dials go have fun. If you wonder how they translate into Battletech's version and want to play there's the normal Record Sheets and the Battleforce stats.

Has anyone actually heard anything useful about MechWarrior Tactics? People have claimed that MWO is vaporware, but MWT seems to have no information at all. And is also just a for profit version of megamek, IE a licenced version of Battletech.

This is not unusual. Screenshots are primiraly released to the press. It's not unusual, that it takes a while until the publisher or developer puts them up on the game's website and very often you only see a handful of them there.
