In Mass Effect I'd probably be an alliance marine. And my home would be where I was stationed.
In battletech I'd be a Mechwarrior, and again home would be where I was stationed. But would probably hail from a backwater.
In Stargate, Earth would be home, and I'd be a part of the SGC even on team, although being a crew member of one of the ships like Prometheus would be cool. Or even on Atlantis. [John Sheppard in SGA, and John Shepard Mass Effect? WF#?]
Starwars, a sith/imperial [not actually a dark lord or apprentice], no other attachments except for the glory of the empire, before I die in act one scene one, because why the hell not?

Took B5 as it was one of the few shows of it's days that didn't try to show how much better we could be, instead let it be known that while we'd travel far we'd never stray from our baser instincts.
Would love to see "Joe" Straczynski's take on the BT universe. If it was in the same vein as B5 would prefer it instead.

Adridos my dear, In WH40K the MOST merciful way to go is to die with a bullet but death in general is merciful if we consider the alternatives, the Dark Eldar comes to mind here; I mean they didn't put the first quote in their Codex as "Pray they don't capture you alive" for nothing.

Freebirth Scum! The day has come for the clans to reclaim the heritage of Karenskiy. Stand down or be swept aside like the garbage you are.

On Babylon from the begining. Through the breakwaway from earth, the Shadow War, and be there untill the lights went out...
A close second place would be to be one of the crew on-board Destiny, Stargate Universe style.

The Battletech timeline is by nature dystopic. No sane person would want to spend any time there as part of anything other than a backdrop to a fighting game. Think about it: Feudal/monarchic rule, death squads headed up by spymasters, seppuku, invading armies, terrorist actions (the Joker), extreme poverty, planets with hellish terraforming conditions, servitude to the Clans if you are in the coreward side. The average person in the Inner Sphere has a pretty crappy life. But we endure it for the slim prospect of piloting a many-tonned death machine, donning the symbolic armor of the knights of old.

I would definitely be part of an exploratory scout force, willing to risk my own well being for exploring the great unknowns. Living on my ship would be a requirement but that would stop me from visiting planets and taking 'vacations' of sorts!

Battlestar/Halo wouldn't be bad either. Infact, it would be pretty much the same as today considering that the 12 Colonies and UNSC generally like to keep their technology where it is needed most; in space. They have some problems with insurgents, but who doesn't?

After reading most if not all the books, i love this genre. Those he criticize it are afraid of it. Whether a lowly Guardsmen, to the greatest warrior the human race has ever known, Space marines, this universe keeps you on your toes. Either you die a hero or live to see yourself to become a heretic.
Space Marine (Evil or no) or hell the guard (Gaunts Ghosts baby)

I have a thing for visions of the future which show us going places and evolving forwards and on top of everything else in this awesome show the vision of a future human at the death of the solar system just rocked that part of my soul which wants to know that we have a long term future.
Plus I want a white star only slightly less than I want an X-Wing.

Fixed some mistakes for you.
Oh, and I am also a great fan of WH40K but I do prefer to live in a universe than is a bit less GRIMDARK-ish than the WH40K universe. It is not a matter of fear or courage, it's a matter of which universe you would prefer to live in if you want to live in a place of neverending war then by all means. But that doesn't mean the others who chose a more peaceful universe are cowards.

Yeah, this goes for BT, and many other franchises. Anyone who thinks they'd like real life in a grinding war and/or life under a horribly oppressive regime, is either not thinking, or not sane, and I mean some of these universes are literally so bad, they'd make Stalinist Russia and Khmer Rouge Cambodia combined and set as the backdrop for WWI trench warfare look like a vision of paradise. There goes BT, a lot of Star Wars, Battletech and 40k (ESPECIALLY 40k) right off the bat. Most people in EVE, and a great deal in Firefly have really lousy lives as well, if for different reasons. In BSG life you effectively have no future unless you/your offspring survive the holocaust and land on Earth (so technically we ARE living in that universe anyways, as it becomes in about 175,000 years )
Trek would be the obvious choice. Poverty downright doesn't exist in the Federation, you get any opportunity to do anything you like as long as you're willing to work for it, you can pursue anything without worrying about whether it pays enough to live off of (in other words, your life is dedicate solely to personally significant pursuits), you live in effectively perfect safety and security (as long as you didn't settle along the Cardassian DMZ), you have an effectively infinite universe that you can just go out and explore, anytime you like (again, no need for a job to hold you down; just get up, hop on a transport, go wherever you feel like), and if you want to be someone of significance, you can be, regardless of who you are or your place in society, so long as you're willing to work for it. Star Trek is like the perfect universe, as a 5 year old would envision it, without the drawbacks. You really DO get to be/do anything you want, and most of the life-engulfing concerns that make life not fun in the here and now are long gone. Additionally, the future is boundless and bright. Anyone who'd turn that down is either masochistic, or high.
Stargate would be a possibly-ideal choice, if you got to be part of the SGC. There's a war going on, yes, but there's a lot more to the Stargate program. The Stargate program is an adventure of the best kind: you not only get to go off and explore other planets, and meet new races, but you're doing it for the benefit of humanity; you're actually doing something really important. Additionally, humanity is growing rapidly in its role in galactic affairs, so again, you're left with a boundless and bright future you get to explore, though in a more structured/restricted manner than Trek, given that there's only a few human-controlled stargates, and they're under military command. The best bet for freedom to pursue interesting adventures would be on Atlantis, where gate travel is often pretty unrestricted so long as the expedition leaders knows where and why you're going.
Mass Effect isn't an ideal universe, but it's no worse off than present-day Earth in most respects, and is better off in others. Overall, it'd still probably beat the heck out of real life, at least as a human. It's stated that even the most poverty-stricken humans in Mass Effect enjoy life that's at least equivalent to life today, and a heck of a lot of the universe is better off than that.
On the other hand, a lot of the ME universe is too... I don't know, metallic, for my liking. Earth is a crowded cesspit, a lot of life takes place on stations or ships, I'd go batty with so little in the way of a remotely naturalistic setting. Of course, that applies to Trek too, since I'd probably go batty on most Federation ships, unless they were planetary survey vessels and I was an onboard biologist.
